Oooh, I need ideas too - not finding out sex and due 8th August Apparently they still need a light cardigan and a hat (!?!). I know mothercare had some lemon short dungarees when I looked a few weeks ago.

StealthPolarBear · 25/05/2008 22:21

nothing where you feel like you have to break their arm to get it through the sleeves
Asda vests are very wide!
Knowing what I know now, I would go for vest + blanket

StealthPolarBear · 25/05/2008 22:22

dungarees

lackaDAISYcal · 25/05/2008 22:23

babygro
babygro
and another babygro.

hat and a cardi.

with my PFB I had endless cute outfits for him.

Poor DD lived in babygros for the first six weeks of her life. soooo much easier than fiddly buttons.

lillypie · 25/05/2008 22:23

Just take something simple, little babies hate being messed about with.

ruddynorah · 25/05/2008 22:23

i would go for plain white. mamas and papas do gorgeous sets saying things like 'welcome to the world' in tiny, understated letters. ver cute without being tacky.

if you want a bit of colour i would just take 2 hats, one pink and one blue..

Kif · 25/05/2008 22:25

vest which open out entirely flat.

Little cotton hats

light receiving blanket thing made of wool or something else natural...

Of course my bean is coming into the world to hand-me-down ASDA vests {hmm]

StealthPolarBear · 25/05/2008 22:25

my ds would still be in babygros (13months) if i didn't think I'd get asked questions about my suitability as a mother

snice · 25/05/2008 22:28

Plain white babygros washed and tumbledried before you go in. To be honest it was so hot when we were in DD wore nappy, vest and nothing else.

There was a newborn two beds down wearing jeans, jean jacket (a la Shakin Stevens) and mini trainers. [speechless emotion]

ConnorTraceptive · 25/05/2008 22:28

LOL @ dungarees

Just buy a pack of plain white vests, babygrows, couple of hats and scratch mits (or get the mother care babygrows with integeral mits - they're great) get 0-3 months stuff I packed Newborn sizes and DS1 was 10 pound when born and didn't fit into a damn thing!

Yurtgirl · 25/05/2008 22:28

Why not save fancy outfits for later

For in hospital and coming home youll be far better off with babygros, a cardigan and a light hat

Heaps of babygros in 0-3 were essential for my newborns - even in hospital as dh wasnt able to wash them and get them back to me quickly, my los needed lots even before we left hospital

fymandbean · 25/05/2008 22:29

Lol at dungarees

12 vests
12 babygros with feet in (no need for socks!)
Hat
Scratch mittens
Blanket

I was in 4 days with my 1st and needed all 12. (boys wee on everything the minute you remove the nappy) Tesco do a good selection!

snice · 25/05/2008 22:29

That first black poo is very hard to get off pale yellow dungarees

ConnorTraceptive · 25/05/2008 22:30

Well we're heading into summer now so maybe a light linen jacket with the jeans and canvas shoes ( a la miami vice)

4andnotout · 25/05/2008 22:32

I took newborn clothes for dd3 who turned out to be 8lb11oz and rotund so nothing fitted her

StealthPolarBear · 26/05/2008 09:02

My DS was wrapped in the hopital blanket until we left - so he only needed one set of clothes - I was surprised by that.

MrsTittleMouse · 26/05/2008 12:11

Don't get anything that doesn't have poppers all the way down the front! I speak from experience. I would also recommend vests with the wide envelope necks, or with poppers on the shoulder. I had a really cute vest for DD with poppers at the back and really struggled.

Orissiah · 26/05/2008 12:14

For June baby, we're going with three sleepsuits (all in ones, white and cream), three vests (white), three babygros with three quarter length sleeves (cream and white), cotton hat (white), socks, scratch mits, cotton cellular blanket and loads of nappies. If I need to stay in longer, we have more clothes packed separately.

All in 0-3 months size.

We have saved all the cute clothes at home until we get the knack of changing nappies and dressing newborns as I am sure my own inexperience will lead to me spoiling a fair few clothes!

O
39 weeks (eeek!)

popsycal · 26/05/2008 12:18

lots of sleepsuits
that is all you will need

addictedtoharibo · 26/05/2008 12:21

Last time I had lots of lovely newborn and 0 - 3 outfits and he wore none of them. It wasnt until he was in 3 - 6 that he started wearing some bits and pieces and by that I mean joggers with his baby gro and a t shirt over the top. You change them so many times that anything that doesnt whip on and off super quick you soon forget.

This time I have just bought a load of vests and babygros. They are so little and scrunched up outfits might look odd on them and then you get paranoid about rubbing, chaffing etc etc.

DS also grew stupidly quickly and was out of newborn in 2 weeks, then out of 0 - 3 in another few weeks - so I am not spending more than a few pound on anything until this baby is old enough to wear it for more than 2 minutes.

The other thing is that babies tend to be sick and poo a lot meaning that your lovely pricey newborn outfit is worn for 20 seconds. Also by that point all I cared about was getting home - if he had been wearing a sack I wouldnt have cared. And once home I wanted to get straight in the house - certainly wasnt up to parading his cute outfit to people.

Perhaps if you want to get one lovely outfit for a quick photo then that might be an idea for home if you have the energy lol. There are also some lovely babygros out there that will make them look just as lovely. And to be honest they could wear anything and you will think they are the most gorgeous baby ever...

Oh and take two different sizes
We took newborn ones for ds2 as that is what ds1 wore....ds2 was almost 9lb and they wouldn't go near him. He lived in a backless mini hospital gown until dh went home and returned again!

bigboydiditandranaway · 27/05/2008 08:06

Thanks for your messages, love the miami vice look

Last time i just took in babygrows and vests, but just wondered if i should of made more of an effort and put him in something posher!

Good idea about the sizes, ds was in 0-3 and looked like an orfan as he was born early and weighed 6.13lb!

Would also like to take pink and blue items but i can see my case is going to start looking huge maybe!

Flamesparro · 27/05/2008 08:13

these open easily

ladytophamhatt · 27/05/2008 08:23

seriously???

Clothes for your newborn in hospital???

Dungerees??

Why???

I did buy one slightly posher babygro to come home in, but other that that they were just white.

none of mine wore actual clothes for a good few weeks.

misdee · 27/05/2008 08:29

i will be taking 3 x baby nightdresses,3 vests, 3 pairs of socks, scratch mitss, hat, cardigans, blanket and a jacket/snowsuit (november baby). will likely be in for at least two days.

dd2 who was born on a lovely warm sept day, wore a short romper type suit, like a sleepsuits but shorter, socks, light jacket and hat. plus blanket.
