These are quite cute if you don't want white

BouncingTurtle · 27/05/2008 08:38

All I took in to hospital for the PFB was a few sleepsuits in cream and white and some plain white vests. Also couple of pairs of scratch mitts(though I got the sleepsuits from Mothercare with the integral scratch mitts which are much better), and a little hat. DH did have to go out and buy a snowsuit(he was a December baby and the weather was absolutely foul!) as the one my mum bought was too big - ds was titchy, despite my MW insisting I was having a big baby . I did have a little fleece baby gro for when he came out of the hospital, but I saved all the cute little outfits for after the hospital. Think I took about 4 vests and 4 sleepsuits. I was in hospital for 2 nights.

Flamesparro · 27/05/2008 08:43

I took vests for DD, a couple of sleepsuits, and one pink stripey sleepsuit/vest set... I had no idea if she was a girl, but I love stripes, so went with the theory I would take it on the off chance

She spent most of her time in just vest (heatwave 2003)

DS was easy - homebirth

Fillyjonk · 27/05/2008 08:51

gosh dd2 is nearly 4 months and she has not really ever worn anything apart from baby gros (3rd baby)

I'd take, at most, 2 vests, 1 hat, some socks and 2 babygros. And a cardigan (you could do the cute thing here if you wanted-do you have any knitting grandmas?) . if pos get ones which don't go over the head-green baby has kimono style vests, I know gap has all in ones that open fully with poppers.

tbh I just took 0-3 months and rolled up the slleves. babies are so curled up anyway that no one will notice.

EyeballsintheSky · 27/05/2008 09:04

Filly, PFB DD is 4.5 months and I've only just put the babygros away. Can't see the point of putting tinies in anything else and babygros are so comfy looking and cute.

I took lots of white and a posh babygro for going home. Silly fool that I am as it went over her head instead of fastening down the front. Won't do that again!

Tommy · 27/05/2008 09:13

DS2 was born in the middle of heat wave so I only took vests in for him. The day I took him home, it oured for the first tine in ages and I had to steal borrow a blanket from the hospital to wrap him up in

Tommy · 27/05/2008 09:15

BTW - in answer to the OP, don't worry about clothes - babygros are fine. Last time I was in, the woman opposite me had done the whole outfit thing (including a rather thick cardigan - in a hosital ward which is like an oven) and you could see all the midwives getting a bit frustrated every time they wanted to look at the baby as they had to unravel all these layers of clothes and work out how to get them all off

JessJess3908 · 27/05/2008 14:22

All this white... are you allowed to use ace bleach on baby clothes?

MrsBadger · 27/05/2008 14:52

why, what are they eating that's going to stain them?

Vanish and a normal wash work for most things until they are 6m and smearing carrot everywhere, at which point all you need is Vanish, a normal wash and hang in the sun for a day.

ladytophamhatt · 27/05/2008 15:21

You won't need anything escept normal non-bio washing powder until tehy start eating.

I wouldn't use any belach/vanish/whatever on baby clothes.

MrsBadger · 27/05/2008 15:22

I only used Vanish on poo...

JessJess3908 · 27/05/2008 15:49

Thanks Badger & lady topham. I've been handed down loads of white vests and babygros - just feel like i should be doing something to make them nice for little one.

Have been lucky with hand me downs - all seems a bit too easy so far!

ladytophamhatt · 27/05/2008 16:34

I chuck poo stained ones out.

I've got some vanish o f somesort in teh cupbaord and it didn't work on the big dsses school shirts.

My boys are either really dirty, or I'm doing something wrong.

sweetkitty · 27/05/2008 17:04

I'm hoping for a homebirth but have to have a just in case bag packed.

In it (July baby) will be

3 babygros
cardi (in case it's cold)
3 vests
hat
scratchmitts
shawl

I do have loads of outfits but they are mostly from DD1 who was another July baby, DD2 was January so DD1's stuff is better. I agree there is nothing nicer than a newborn in a babygro, I think I may have to get some white ones now.

star6 · 27/05/2008 21:42

ok sorry first time pregnancy here... a lot of you are saying this and I just don't know what you're talking about - what is a baby gro? Is that just a sleeper suit?

quickdrawmcgraw · 27/05/2008 21:50

yes a sleeper suit. the fewer seams and buttons and faffing about the better when they're that tiny.
ds was too big for all the babygros I brought in so ended up wearing dd's pink ones in hospital.

3madboys · 27/05/2008 21:54

ds4 is just ten weeks and pretty much all he wears are babygrows, cant be bothered to faff with clothes, he has a few shortie type babygorws with no feet adn short sleeves for the hot weather, but no 'real' clothes as such.

i say babygrows, also those nighties that just lift up are GREAT for easy nappy changes

a little hat, cardigan and a blanket, i always use the cotton cellular ones, john lewis do the nighties and the blankets and also some nice unisex baby clothes

MrsBadger · 28/05/2008 09:37

oh you think the lift-up nighties will be good, but they all go on over the head whihc is my least-favourite bit of dressing. Sleepsuits all the way here.

star6 · 28/05/2008 09:51

how many times do you change a baby's sleepsuit in one day?

MrsBadger · 28/05/2008 09:56

depends how often they're sick on it

most people will put on clean one at bedtime then clean one in the morning but tbh in the early days they aren't generating dirt as such so dd sometimes stayed in hers for 24h.
And of course if they eg poo on it at 4pm put on the 'night' one straight away and save yourself the effort.

vicsta · 28/05/2008 11:24

In 5 days time (and it had better be on time!) I shall be having my first baby. we don't know the sex either so we have bought lots of cheap white babygros & vests from tesco & asda, which is all I intend to dress baby in for as long as possible. However,as this is my 1st I have bought a little going home outfit which is a cream 'I love my bear' jogging suit bought on sale from babies r us. i also have a cream hat & cream scratch mits to match. And MIL bought matching blanket. This is the only 'outfit' I've bought, partly as a little indulgence for me, partly for photos but mostly because this is something (possibly the only thing, clothes wise) that I intend to keep forever.

quickdrawmcgraw · 28/05/2008 11:31

White is good but you could also indulge a little with cardigans I think. They are so useful for going over sleepsuits and any other clothes too. They are also fantastic because you can take them off and on without having to pull them over your baby's head.

areyouthereMNtismeMargaret · 28/05/2008 11:35

Just loads of babygrows a hat and a blanket.
Also if you are staying in for a bit take a couple of baby towels to put under them when you change the first few pooey nappies ,IME if you don't they will soil the sheets and then you will have to ask a grumpy midwife for a new sheet .

Congratulations and good luck.

thomasina1 · 28/05/2008 13:50

This is probably a stupid question, but does the baby wear the vest under the babygo? Or for different purposes?? I haven't got a clue!

areyouthereMNtismeMargaret · 28/05/2008 13:56

The baby wears the vest under the babygrow .
