Are Shein clothes safe in pregnancy?

Hi, I’m currently 16 weeks pregnant. I’m going on holiday soon and was wanting some dresses and vests for my holiday, but not wanting to spend a fortune due to financial issues.

I’ve seen some nice enough dresses and things on Shein that will just put me on for my 5 night holiday stay abroad, however, I’m reading online that Shein clothing has chemicals in them and are toxic?

Has anybody else worn Shein clothing pregnant? Should this just be avoided to be on safe side?

I’m finding pregnancy difficult because whatever it is, it’s unsafe for my unborn baby. I’ve had the same problem with skin care too.

Any recommendations for stores as an alternative if Shein is unsafe? I mean I can go to Primark but that’s all cheap ish too, unless that is safer? It is so hard to find what to do.

thankyou

Yes shein is known for using toxic chemicals, the clothes don't meet European safety standards.

Plus all the child labour/slavery (!!)

I have been pregnant through the summer and found a long cotton maxi dress quite good (and can be worn post baby) i also got loads of seraphine items off Ebay for very cheap.

Vinted is amazing, but warning - it is VERY addictive 🤣😂

I don’t think you’re mad, I won’t wear Shein or buy anything from Temu. Or any other drop shipping style site.

loads of stuff fails spot checks for being covered in Formaldehyde or manufactured with things that are banned over here.

i know the same can happen with, say primark or John Lewis or Tesco - but I feel they prob have whole teams of people checking factories, manufacturing processes etc and assuring everything confirms to standard. I dunno, I feel a bit more assured.

it was a buzzfeed news article that I saw yearrrs ago, put me right off.

Vinted is great for maternity, I found. Got loads of Jojo Maman Bebe stuff for not much money.

Thank you!!!! I only came here for some advice, as I had seen the stuff elsewhere.

Thank you for the advice. I will check on Vinted!! I only need a few bits & bobs for going away😊

Completely fine.

George Asda have good maternity basics too, lots of choice online. Usually nicer fabric than SHEIN clothes

SupposesRoses · 02/07/2025 17:50

Normal thing to consider when it’s known the clothes don’t have to comply with the same safety standards as clothes sold in shops.
Shein and Temu are accused of complicity in genocide so perhaps on another level to sweatshops, too.

Oh give over all of those being sanctimonious about SHEIN

it’s actually one of the only places I can get clothes to fit (petite and pregnant) and maybe some people don’t have the money to spend at high street shops.

ive bought a couple of non maternity clothes from Shein and used them as mat clothes which have been a life saver especially bodycon dresses which won’t swamp me.

give them a good wash x

This post is madness

Edited

Can you imagine if it was actually true and Shein has been pumping out clothes covered in toxic waste killing babies 😂

OP I do think you should speak to your MW.

FancyCatSlave · 02/07/2025 19:32

I got a load of free maternity clothes off marketplace- I’d prefer that to Shein personally.

They definitely need washing first, but ethically I won’t use Shein or Temu. I just can’t bring myself to do it.

Personally I wouldn’t touch clothes from Shein or Temu and other similar sites. There is no quality control or oversight and you have no idea if the fabric is what it says it is and whether toxic chemicals were used in the manufacture. Even if the quantities of such chemicals are not enough to cause immediate harm there could be chemicals that are banned in the UK/EU for known effects over longer period time such as suspected carcinogens.

Brands that have a large high street presence may not be without problems but they do have more oversight over their manufacturing supply chain and will try to get their clothes manufactured to UK/EU safety standards.

Most of the uk high street shops all have their factories based in China, and get them mass produced and shipped over. The same as shein.

Yes you’re totally right babes. Who cares about child slave labour and toxic work environments. Totally worth making other peoples children’s lives miserable so you can afford a maternity body con dress- a total
lifesaver (although not the child slaves obvs!) you do you hun and slay

🙄

High street shops do have teams of people in charge of the supply chain and trying to make sure things conform to legal standards (although I’m sure not perfect). They also gave more to lose reputation wise when dodgy stuff comes out.

Production is much more decentralised through Shein and Temu.

Screamingabdabz · 02/07/2025 23:05

If you are buying from Shein or Temu you are supporting human slavery and misery. Shameful.

PurpleChrayn · 02/07/2025 23:20

Seriously?

Was it Claire short that said better sewing footballs than being in the sex industry?

NojitoandLime · 03/07/2025 07:43

I really don't want to be preachy but how can you be pregnant with a baby you presumably care for, and endorse all the unethical practices of Shein which affect children?

Just use Vinted or charity shops. There is loads of good stuff on there.

They aren't the same as Shein.

There are a lot of ethical issues with some high street chains as well, yes, but it really doesn't take much research to see that Shein is massively problematic and much worse than all of them.

It should not be legal.

OneSpoonyGreyWasp · 03/07/2025 07:48

Maybe not the tight stuff so no knickers or leggings.

That’s how you justify it to yourself is it? You’re supporting human slavery, and all the horror that entails, not a labour workforce. Jeez.

I haven’t purchased from Shein. I was asking for people’s opinions, which they are clearly giving. 🤣
