Are Shein clothes safe in pregnancy?

Hi, I’m currently 16 weeks pregnant. I’m going on holiday soon and was wanting some dresses and vests for my holiday, but not wanting to spend a fortune due to financial issues.

I’ve seen some nice enough dresses and things on Shein that will just put me on for my 5 night holiday stay abroad, however, I’m reading online that Shein clothing has chemicals in them and are toxic?

Has anybody else worn Shein clothing pregnant? Should this just be avoided to be on safe side?

I’m finding pregnancy difficult because whatever it is, it’s unsafe for my unborn baby. I’ve had the same problem with skin care too.

Any recommendations for stores as an alternative if Shein is unsafe? I mean I can go to Primark but that’s all cheap ish too, unless that is safer? It is so hard to find what to do.

thankyou

I imagine they r absolutely fine. Give them a wash before you wear them if you’re overly concerned about it. A lot of ppl will have much to say about SHEIN ethically but I don’t think clothes will harm an unborn child

I think if you’re so worried about the chemicals being harmful to your unborn child you should have more integrity than purchase them in the first place, especially given their publicised record of using other peoples children to manufacture the clothes using those toxic chemicals 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, I haven’t purchased them. I was just asking for advice. Thanks.

You have nothing to worry about with regard to the clothing.

I do think you should speak to your midwife about antenatal anxiety, though.

Thank you! Yes I will at my next app.

Just have a look around some charity shops-you may find better quality for similar or lower prices.

neleh87 · 02/07/2025 16:31

I would look on vinted for cheaper clothes. It's a good place to find maternity and baby clothes too!

Twinkletwinklelil · 02/07/2025 16:33

Absolutely fine. I wore a lot of shein throughout my pregnancies.

Francestein · 02/07/2025 16:33

Well, I wouldn’t recommend eating them

LardoBurrows · 02/07/2025 16:34

Why don't you look in your local charity shops or on Vinted. Chances are that you will find much better quality cotton or linen clothes from those sources rather than buying toxic polyester clothes from the likes of Shein.

DiscoBob · 02/07/2025 16:35

I don't know? How can stuff be sold in the UK that's so toxic it can harm your unborn child just by it touching your skin?
That sounds awful if it is a possibility. But surely regulations apply to every product that it can't be that dangerous?

SummerEve · 02/07/2025 16:36

This post is madness

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 02/07/2025 16:37

I read the article too. And I’d either wash thoroughly or look elsewhere.

WonderingWanda · 02/07/2025 16:38

Most clothing will have chemical residue from the manufacturing process. Wash them before wearing.

It’s so extreme! Woman across the world do all sorts of things during pregnancy but some of the things that worry people in the MN zone are just completely out there.

I have no idea. I just saw some stuff on Reddit that said do not buy, and just came on here for advice. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for that. I saw some posts and articles about it so wanted to come here for advice.

Wasn't that to do with the ethics of buying from Shein or Temu?

It was to do with both things.

Okay. TBH I'd avoid Shein and Temu.

Not because their clothing is toxic to human beings, but because of their awful business practices.

But isn't most stuff made in China now & how is one Chinese factory who makes stuff for say Next, Tui, Tik Tok, H&M, or Primark etc more ethical & less likely to use slave labour than say Shein orTemu? Does anyone know of stores where stuff isn't mass produced there? Genuine question. I suppose due diligence & wash the clothes before wearing apply or go for Vinted.

Unicornsandprincesses · 02/07/2025 17:14

I don’t think you’re mad, I won’t wear Shein or buy anything from Temu. Or any other drop shipping style site.

loads of stuff fails spot checks for being covered in Formaldehyde or manufactured with things that are banned over here.

i know the same can happen with, say primark or John Lewis or Tesco - but I feel they prob have whole teams of people checking factories, manufacturing processes etc and assuring everything confirms to standard. I dunno, I feel a bit more assured.

it was a buzzfeed news article that I saw yearrrs ago, put me right off.

Vinted is great for maternity, I found. Got loads of Jojo Maman Bebe stuff for not much money.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/07/2025 17:18

I do very much recommend Vinted, @laur96x

You can get some excellent bargains on there, for you and for your baby.
