How long did you stay in hospital after c section?

First one I stayed two nights but obviously keen to get home to DC1 asap this time - is 1 night realistic? How long did you stay in hospital? I know it'll depend on complications etc but trying to get an idea of possibilities.

First was also planned but due to medical issues, this one planned as don't fancy vbac.

1st I stayed 5 nights
2nd I was only in one night and home the next morning

Picklesandpears · 05/06/2025 09:45

5 nights (baby related, I was fine).
1 night.

I think the policy now is 24 hours unless you need to stay longer.

mynameiscalypso · 05/06/2025 09:47

I stayed one night. I’d already agreed in advance with the consultant that we’d aim for one night unless there were any significant issues and the team were great at making sure it happened.

Rebootnecessary · 05/06/2025 09:49

5 nights with both, but this was 30 years ago and I was quite poorly each time. First one was emergency second one was planned.

JellyAnd · 05/06/2025 09:51

3 nights with my first, 2 with my second but that was private so they were encouraging long stays. I could have easily managed 24 hours after my second and I think that’s what the NHS encourage now if all goes to plan. Just ask for the good pain relief so you can get up and moving asap, ask for the catheter out as soon as you’re up, chug water, use the toilet and so long as baby is healthy then it should be fine.

I had my csection at 12.30 and was home by 3 the next day, would have been home earlier but had to wait for discharge papers.

elb1504 · 05/06/2025 10:45

Not long had planned section, had it at 9.30am one day and was home by 12.30pm the following day.

CosmicCuppa · 05/06/2025 10:46

Less than one night. I had him at 3am and was discharged by 2pm the next day.

Sulking · 05/06/2025 10:50

Had my c section at 2pm ish last time, stayed that night and went home the next morning.

GloriousBlue · 05/06/2025 11:37

1 night, both emergencies

Chiaseedz · 05/06/2025 12:00

For those that had 1 night, did it feel long enough (or were you rushed out)? I think 1 night would seem ok, I'll have lots of help at home, but good to hear how you coped.

1 night ish.
I had the section at 3. Was on the postnatal ward at 2am. Left at 10am.

I had some really horrible experiences in the postnatal ward with my first so they knew I wanted to spend as little time as possible there - so they were great at accommodating that. It was so lovely and actually healed a lot of my trauma.

in terms of whether it was enough - for me, definitely. I just wanted to get home and be with my eldest too. I also had the luxury of having a mother who used to be a midwife so I knew I’d be just as safe and supported (with feeding etc) with her at home.

MomToBe2025xx · 05/06/2025 12:46

I was home the day after 🤗

CrawlingOutOfTheTrenches · 05/06/2025 12:52

I stayed in 1 night, I wasn't discharged till early evening. It would have been earlier but there was a delay with discharge paperwork, meds etc.

If it's uncomplicated, then 1 night is definitely realistic. I felt 1 night was fine, but I got my catheter removed, up and on my feet 7 hours post op. I just took things easy.

IdLikeABackMassage · 05/06/2025 12:53

One night and I was happy about that, as wanted to get home to ds and was feeling up to it.

However, there was a woman on my ward who wasn't feeling ready to go home so I don't think you can know for sure in advance.

Leapfrogslight · 05/06/2025 19:49

I stayed 24 hours which was hospital policy. They did discharges at all hours which meant we left at midnight (exactly 24 hours after my section) and got home about 1am. At the time I REALLY wanted to go home, but it definitely wasn’t a great time to get home with a newborn, especially when the community midwife turned up at 9 the next morning!

I found the hospital couldn’t get me out fast enough. They needed the bed.

Leapfrogslight · 05/06/2025 19:51

Also my DH wasn’t allowed to stay in the hospital, he had been asked to leave at 3am the night before (few hours after my op) when I moved to the postnatal ward and I had really struggled without any help. So I was super keen to get home as then DH was there to change and pass me baby.

MamaBear2210T · 05/06/2025 19:53

Baby born 7:30pm, on ward at 12am and home at 6pm next day. I was eager to get out!

PlantDoctor · 05/06/2025 20:03

I had DD about 9.30 am, left at 6pm the next day. The staff offered another night but I really wanted to get home as it was BOILING and so noisy! You should be fine for 1 night as long as you are both doing well.

SquashPenguin · 05/06/2025 20:04

One week.

Bluebubblepig · 05/06/2025 20:05

24 hours pretty much exact maybe closer to 25 x

FNDandme · 05/06/2025 20:09

2 nights. Consultant had warned me to be ready to stay for 4 but the sister was trying to chase us out less than 24hr after CS even with a haemorrhage 🤨

OnTheJourneyOnwards · 05/06/2025 20:11

About 4 days. But it was an emergency one with some minor complications. And I hadn’t slept for a week beforehand so I ended up just sleeping off the surgery. I even slept through the c section itself!

maras2 · 05/06/2025 20:41

10 days plus 2 for the weekend.
Meals in bed for 1 week then in the dining room,
2 hourly cups of tea
Visitors 1 hour in the afternoons and just 'fathers' for 1 and 1/2 hours evening.
Babies in nursery at night but breast feeders allowed to feed on demand.
Talks and short courses in the day ie contraception, mother's well being babies nutrition etc.
Sounds lovely now but at the time it was like 'Groundhog Day'
This was in 1976, THE DROUGHT YEAR. 2 inches of water in the bath, no air con nor refrigerated drinks. Next baby 1982. Not much change but much colder and the heating packed up whilst I was having the C section so when I came round I was shivering so much I thought that I was having a post partum haemorrhage.😱

MrsMcnulty20 · 05/06/2025 20:50

One night, I was desperate to get out. Covid restrictions and horrendous lack of care on the ward - I knew my partner would look after us much better so I forced myself to get a wee out (had to prove I could do it to be discharged!!)
