For coming home from hospital? I bought a multi pack of babygros and DMil made beautiful blankets . Didn’t buy any accessories - can’t think of any for a new born baby.

TomatoSandwiches · 11/05/2025 17:11

My summer borns both came home in soft cotton baby grows and a light blanket, their skin is so delicate they need natural fibers and their heads are still so soft a hat if its cold, nothing else needed!

xmasdealhunter · 11/05/2025 17:12

babygros will be your best bet coming home from hospital- This shop on etsy has some lovely ones if you want something special MadeByKalemera - Etsy UK, and they're 100% cotton. Verbadet have some lovely dresses for when she's a bit bigger (they start sizing from 1m I think) vertbaudet.co.uk/search=baby dress.htm

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/05/2025 17:12

New borns tend to stay curled up for a while so a dress is unlikely to work as a first outfit. Stick with a soft comfy baby grow and stay away from any accessories. Their skulls are still soft so it’s best not to squeeze them with anything (I assume you meant bows). I know it’s exciting but with kindness, I’d keep the dresses and frills for a little bit later on.

I remember buying the multi pack of babygros to use for DT’s coming out of hospital. They both 💩 on one as soon as we got them dressed and had to totally change them before we left the ward. Don’t buy anything expensive!
They only wore baby gros until they were about nine months old when we moved into leggings and T-shirts.

SouthLondonMum22 · 11/05/2025 17:18

If you don't want to bring baby home in a sleepsuit, maybe consider a romper or top with leggings.

My twin girls were born in April last year and we don't do sleepsuits during the day so they came home in rompers.

Iloveeverycat · 11/05/2025 17:19

You only need babygrows nothing else.

MsFogi · 11/05/2025 17:21

Don't bother with dresses for a while - simple cotton babyros are your friend here.

MsFogi · 11/05/2025 17:22

Generally I think babies are very uncomfortable in dresses until they are walking - whilst they are only lying/sitting they tend to ride up and end up around their neck/head!!

littledutch · 11/05/2025 17:22

I literally got discharged from hospital from midnight, it was raining and I could barely walk after a csection. No idea what DS had ended up wearing as his ‘going home’ outfit! DH had to sort him out because I couldn’t move properly.

Sorry it’s not what you asked but I wouldn’t overthink it or spend money on it. A sleepsuit is fine, easy and comfy for baby.

Babyboomtastic · 11/05/2025 17:22

We used a lot of John Lewis dresses. A lot of them are very soft and in warm weather is far easier to change a nappy in a dress than faff arrive with poppers

RosesAndHellebores · 11/05/2025 17:27

You only need babygros at this stage.

Keep the chanel handbag for later.

What accessories might a newborn need do you think op? Bib, hat, soft cardigan, socks?

RosesAndHellebores · 11/05/2025 17:29

I always advise a clean shirt for your dh. They gave dh the baby to hold and he was covered in meconium in seconds.

Ddakji · 11/05/2025 17:32

Dresses are useless on babies, you pick the baby up, her dress hikes up every time, you pull the dress down. X 100 every day.

There are lots of cute baby grows you can get, still pretty but much more practical.

Don’t make your life any more difficult than it needs be!

Getting a baby into a dress is a waste of time and money. They're all scrunched up and the dress won't sit properly.

Just out them in a nice baby grow and a hat and invest in a lovely blanket.

Bennetton have some lovely ones in, or if she's a bigger baby then Verbadet is worth a look too (their clothes start from slightly bigger)

Personally I always buy a pack of babygrows and then one special JoJo Mama Bebe or John Lewis or Jacadi or Trotters outfit.

I love adorable newborn outfits. Usually buy them in size 0-3m rather than newborn or 0-1m though, because some big babies won't fit at all in newborn clothes.

A babygro. You have one ready as soon as checks are done etc. From memory the midwife put the nappy on and DH dressed them.

All my 4 were in a babygrow in the hospital pictures

It always makes me laugh on these threads, it’s definitely a Mumsnet thing to insist on baby grows for as long as possible.
There are some really sweet newborn dresses in Next. Try Jojo too.
I can remember taking DD1 out for a walk along the seafront in her pram at about 2 weeks old, on a sunny day, I still have the dress 😍

You don’t want a dress for that, they look weird on very newborn babies. Try a cute romper.

I seem to recall telling the Bounty photographer to fuck off. 😂😂😂

Who's they @biscuitsndtea. Mine are grown up now and back in the mid 90s a Bounty Lady came to try and flog overpriced photos. I said no. Our first photo of DS is in a babygro and a hat, wrapped in a blanket. DD wore a dress when she was about 4 months and looked so uncomfortable.

BunnyRuddington · 11/05/2025 19:46

It’s a lovely idea but as a PP has said, newborns do tend to stay pretty curled up for a while.

They are used to limited space, which is one reason swaddling can make them feel comfortable. They seem to not realise that they can stretch out, which can make fiddly clothing, like dresses a bit difficult for you to put on them and uncomfortable for them to wear Smile

How about a pretty cotton sleep suit like this one?
