How to survive nausea in the first trimester?!?

Any advice or help appreciated!!

Currently between 6-7 weeks pregnant and the nausea is killing me! Have been signed off work until next week but don’t see how I can go back if nothing changes!

Tried hydration, eating little and often, rest etc. Dr gave me promethezine which is great in the evening once I’ve taken it but doesn’t do anything for the day times.

No actual vomiting, just awful awful nausea.

Any tried and tested suggestions? Please!

Try to feel grateful and positive but can’t see a way through this in the short term!

Ginger. Ginger tea , ginger biscuits.

Apples can also help with nausea sometimes.

Mint helps me a lot too.

Congratulations by the way:)

i actually think the nausea is in part the stomach not digesting anything. I found acidic things were good eg apples/oranges and fizzy water.
I was exactly the same as you so you have my sympathies. I would advise just being signed off for the next four weeks and try to sleep as much as possible; if only to make time pass quickly.

The other thing is trying to make yourself sick. It sounds disgusting but gagging gave me relief for about 15 minutes.

You’ll find by week 10 it’s not quite so bad.

MellowPinkDeer · 07/05/2025 13:40

Ice lolly’s , twisters or rockets were my preferred, I use to hold them on the side of my tongue and I instantly felt better!!

also, have you tried the travel sickness wrist bands?

Octavia64 · 07/05/2025 13:43

More drugs.

(I had hyperemesis)

BrianaBlessed · 07/05/2025 13:46

Why can you only take the Promethezine in the evening? You can buy it over the counter but I don’t know about its use in pregnancy per se

BrianaBlessed · 07/05/2025 13:48

Sorry I was thinking of Prochlorperazine. That looks to be fine in pregnancy. Could you try that? It’s very effective

LouDew · 07/05/2025 13:48

Thank you all!

Some good suggestions there to try!

I’ve considered taking the promethezine in the morning too but it makes me super drowsy - might have to take the risk at this point as all I can do is lie on the sofa feeling sorry for myself if not!

I’ve got a little girl who is 4 and had only a tiny bit of nausea around 7 weeks her. That was back in 2020 in lockdown so it didn’t matter too much if I couldn’t do anything. This feels 100x worse though.

Hoping it’s a good sign as we’ve had lots of losses too. EPAU scan on Friday will be positive hopefully. Friday just seems a long way away when feeling like this!!

Dry cream crackers. Porridge. Dry bread.

Straightomyhead · 07/05/2025 13:51

Honestly, not much helped for me for either of my pregnancies, I just had to wait it out till 12 weeks. The servings I went to the doctor and got some stronger medication but other than that not much. I tried a lot of stuff but not much helped and I had to rely on my partner alot

queenofthesuburbs · 07/05/2025 15:51

Yes apparently nausea is a sign of a very healthy baby.

coxesorangepippin · 07/05/2025 16:06

Carbs

jolota · 07/05/2025 16:15

Yes this is how I felt, very little actual vomiting (just anything that triggered my gag reflex so every time I brushed my teeth...) so the medication barely helped, according to my GP its mainly to prevent the vomiting, less to do with the nausea. 3 different tablets gave basically no improvement for me.
I had an apple that I kept with me and took a bite every time I felt unwell.
Ice cold water.
Crackers by my bed as the empty stomach first thing in the morning made me feel really nauseous, so I couldn't get up until I'd had something.
But honestly it changed week to week what I felt I could stomach.
It lasted ages and I felt like shit but actually found being off work worse as I couldn't distract myself from it.
My work were understanding about me being not as productive though lol
Just try and find anything you can eat that you can cope with, ice lollys were good for me but only really specific flavours.
I think its just something to get through though, only silver lining is I gained no weight in this pregnancy thanks to extended nausea.
Hope everything goes well at your appointment on Friday!

I had similar, can you try some different meds? Xonvea worked best for me but they don't usually give it to you as a first option as it's expensive.

SareBear87 · 07/05/2025 16:29

I had similar - now 24 weeks and suffering with heartburn induced nausea…
I survived the first trimester on sleep, eating something constantly (I can recommend buying a cereal and eating grain by grain - I could make a bowl of Cheerios last 2 hours!), carbs and suckable sweets/mints.
Everything that worked when I was carrying my DD did nothing this time! Ruddy exhausting! You have my sympathy!

Lelumpolelum · 07/05/2025 16:39

I was prescribed cyclizine when my nausea was particularly bad. I couldn't eat the standard ginger or apple stuff, it gave me terrible hurtburn. It eventually got better around the 14th week, so hang in there! Just take it easy and sleep a lot if you can.

Springhassprungxx · 07/05/2025 16:41

Eating stopped my nausea - sometimes!

Fuelledbylatte · 07/05/2025 16:41

As woo as it sounds, try the inner ear music for nausea…they’ll be tracks on YouTube by now but 20 years ago I had a cd that I played with headphones before I even took a step out of bed…it definitely helped- look it up

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 07/05/2025 16:49

Oh, I had all the carbs

Ritz crackers, grilled cheese, bagels, chips, loads of salt. All things I’d never have touched with a bargepole pre-positive test.

Treat it like a hangover.

I did also have candied ginger, but I reckon that was a placebo

HarryVanderspeigle · 07/05/2025 17:06

Drugs. If one doesn't work, others are available. It's one thing powering through on your first pregnancy, but looking after an existing child while you try not to vom is no fun.

Starlight7080 · 07/05/2025 17:17

Mine lasted till 20 weeks it was awful.
And in the end the simple things like very small amounts of food but 5 times a day .
Even if just some crackers .
But when really bad I resorted to ready salted crisps . And coke.
I know its not the best thing but it worked.
I'm not a pop drinker never have been or since but just worked .

LouDew · 07/05/2025 17:21

Thank you everyone!

It’s comforting to know others have felt the same and I’m not overreacting!
I’m going to try and get a doctors appointment tomorrow to see if they can suggest a different medication.

Also going to stop by Tesco tomorrow after I’ve dropped my daughter at pre-school and stock up on some suggestions. It’s so hard to know what to eat when everything I think of makes me want to gag!

To the poster that mentioned teeth brushing - again, glad it’s not just me, brushing my teeth is torturous - particularly the back ones. But on the other hand, I’m wanting to brush them multiple times a day to keep clean/take the weird taste out my mouth etc. can’t win!!

Just hope it’s all worth it in the end 🤞🏻🤞🏻

More drugs, more time off

Experiment with food - with my daughter all I could manage was tinned peaches, with my second pregnancy I was ok with liquids but couldn't tolerate much food so lived off smoothies and cherry tomatoes. Third pregnancy I was ok with food about could tolerate any liquids or wet foods so lived off toast.

Tried most meds best were the combination of metoclopramide and cyclizine or xonvea. It took until my third pregnancy with bad sickness to accept a month's sick note and not force myself into work once or twice a week trying to cling on to self certified sick leave. My boss also banned me from the office and told me to just work from home where I could be more comfortable.

jolota · 07/05/2025 20:32

Oh yes and as someone else mentioned, mine morphed into heartburn which kept the nausea going past the usual first trimester ‘morning sickness’, I didn’t realise what is was at first but eventually googled and ended up with an omeprazole prescription which did me well, otherwise I couldn’t sleep at all.
I still get the terrible taste in my mouth constantly (& I’m 36 weeks now) so I always have something to snack on or drink to try and combat that throughout the day, but much less nausea now!

Keepingbusyeating · 07/05/2025 21:57

Ahhh I’ve had awful nausea this time around. No sickness but have been on 2 types of tablets. Looking at a screen makes it worse for me, being even a bit hungry makes it worse and so does being tired so I try to manage those things!

Keepingbusyeating · 07/05/2025 21:58

Oh and use mouthwash during the day if you want to get rid of weird taste in mouth!
