How to survive nausea in the first trimester?!?

Any advice or help appreciated!!

Currently between 6-7 weeks pregnant and the nausea is killing me! Have been signed off work until next week but don’t see how I can go back if nothing changes!

Tried hydration, eating little and often, rest etc. Dr gave me promethezine which is great in the evening once I’ve taken it but doesn’t do anything for the day times.

No actual vomiting, just awful awful nausea.

Any tried and tested suggestions? Please!

Try to feel grateful and positive but can’t see a way through this in the short term!

Go back to the GP, keep trying different medications
Hula hoops
Full sugar coke

I had similar, can you try some different meds? Xonvea worked best for me but they don't usually give it to you as a first option as it's expensive.

They should do as it's first line just like the big standard ones but a lot of doctors don't know about it.

Xonvea and Ondansetron together was the only thing that made a difference to me and stopped me being in the EPU on a drip every week.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

We had a scan at EPAU today and saw our little baby with a heartbeat measuring 6+1. Makes it all worth it!

Went to Tesco and stocked up on lots of different things. Cold black current squash and sucking on sweets/mints seem to be helping the most at the moment. The doctor also prescribed me cyclizine to try too. Collecting that today so will give it a try.

Heading back to work on Tuesday so hoping it all works out (I’m a teacher) otherwise there will be some confused little people!

Nibbling on salt and vinegar crisps helped me with the nausea to an extent. Though I was also on Ondansetron for HG.

I sympathise. It was like the worst hangover everyday 😐 I carried sick bags with me as reassurance and anti sickness meds were a life saver.
I tried to limit time in the car, couldn’t horse ride due to the motion and basically lay down for an hour before I had to get up just so I didn’t throw up 🤢

Nibbling rich tea biscuits with small sips of water.
Sucking on small ice cubes. I actually craved them.
Sucking crystallised ginger.
Graze rather than big meals.
I found nausea increased with each pregnancy so you have my sympathy.
Congratulations. Hope the rest of the pregnancy is easier.

handhold. My sickness started at 6 weeks and had it nearly till the end and was diagnosed with hyperemsis. I had about 2 (?) months off work all together, I can’t remember it’s all a blur!! I spent my days in bed, on the bathroom floor, vomitting and crying! Oh my days I didn’t think I’d make it!!! Said baby is now nearly 4 months old ❤️

not much helped but the things that did
ice ice cold coke only to be drunk through a straw
tango ice blasts
very salty McDonald’s chips
crisps (diff kind depending on how I felt)

it was pure torture I feel for you but it will pass and it will be worth it xx

Also sympathise about the teeth brushing situation. I used mouthwash a lot but it had to be the Listerine citrus one. Anything minty was an instant vom for me.

CatChant · 09/05/2025 18:04

The scent of lemon. I used to carry around a lemon hand soap to sniff.

Grazing on very bland foodstuffs also helped. Unfortunately it also meant I packed on the weight but the nausea was so wretched I didn’t care.

For me, it was like being carsick and being unable to get out of the car - for nine months.

There’s a reason there are nine years between my DC!

I'm in the same boat, I'm 8 weeks though, and you have just given me a craving for blackcurrant squash!!
I'm nauseous all night and day at the moment.
With my now 2.5 yo I was like this until past 20 weeks!
I'm coping better this time and I think because I've no choice to be busy.
Last time i stayed in bed vomiting for pretty much the whole time, too sick to eat but that made it worse.
This time I've got DD running around and I'm forcing myself to do jobs around the house but I am also nibbling CONSTANTLY.
I have found once I have something to eat, I absolutely can't eat it again so I am having to change it up at lot.
Today I got a good pressed ginger shot drink from Lidl. Only to have small sips at a time and that's been nice.
And oven baked potato croquettes from the frozen section. Made me feel about 5 years old but they were good 😊

From medical type people on social media, apparently sniffing an alcohol wipe will stop nausea in its tracks

PennyPencils · 10/05/2025 19:42

That's interesting, and one I've never heard before! Like glasses wipes?

If its hyperemesis gravidarium nothing but strong meds and regular admittance to hospital for fluids will stop it. One day I was sick 42 times, even sips of water, and the doctor on EPU asked if I'd tried ginger biscuits 😡

Things that are actually working for me at 8 weeks (after trying approximately everything): 1. Eating BEFORE getting out of bed. I keep crackers on the nightstand like a 90-year-old. 2. Cold food only. Hot food = hot smell = bathroom sprint. 3. Sour things. Lemon ice lollies are my current obsession. 4. Never letting my stomach get fully empty. The hunger nausea is somehow WORSE than the food nausea. 5. Accepting that this is temporary and I am not, in fact, dying. What is NOT working: ginger (makes me gag now), big meals, cooking anything, existing near DH coffee. Solidarity to all of us in the nausea trenches.
