Low lying placenta - when did you have your c sections?

Hello,

it turns out I have a low lying posterior placenta covering the os which they think won’t move at all due to it being at the back of the uterus and not at the front. a c section is looking very likely.

when were your c sections scheduled for with a low lying placenta?

thanks

They're usually in week 39, sometimes week 38, and if you go into labour earlier they do it as an emergency (can still be calm though!)

Boggartdreams · 28/04/2025 13:25

Sorry can’t help on your case as I’m only 28 weeks but I also have low lying placenta so would be interested in hearing replies. Hope everything goes smoothly for you

Rainbowsunshine81 · 28/04/2025 16:04

I have posterior low lying placenta covering the os, I'm having a c section next week and I'll be 38+2, I was under the fetal medicine unit and had a couple of scans there. If it doesn't move up enough they'll advise a c section as they don't like you going into labour so usually before your due date.

poblwc · 28/04/2025 16:41

I had a low lying posterior placenta with my first pregnancy and had the section at 37+1.

GreyGoggles · 28/04/2025 16:44

37+4 for me. Admitted at 36 weeks and they were assessing day by day. My fellow was a whopper on the scans so I think they were happy to go earlier rather than wait later.

tinytemper66 · 28/04/2025 16:49

Emergency C-section at 34 weeks.

qwertylal · 28/04/2025 16:52

I had mine booked in for 38 weeks and went to hospital at 36 weeks until then on bed rest. No bleeds at all which was a massive relief

esunny · 28/04/2025 21:04

Thanks so much for you replies everybody. @Boggartdreams @Chiaseedz @GreyGoggles @poblwc @qwertylal @Rainbowsunshine81 I’m getting rescanned at 32 weeks so we will go from there! I will pack my hospital bag and plan for earlier just incase eeeeek. Might be an August baby instead of a September!

Rainbowsunshine81 · 28/04/2025 21:49

@esunny no worries! I think I got rescanned about 30 weeks. They do say it can move up as the pregnancy progresses.

Restingpotato · 29/04/2025 10:24

I was booked in for a rescan at 36 weeks but had a bleed and was admitted to hospital at 35+5. I was in for 2 nights until the scan then they were happy for me to go home to rest up before a section at 37+5 and all went well. Pack your bags early and have things ready to go just in case!

Idoubtitwillchangemuch · 29/04/2025 10:37

Made it to 38 + 2 which was the day my C-section was booked in for, but had eight weeks of bed rest prior to that, which I opted for instead of a stitch. Started contracting strongly in the early morning of the C-section though and was blue-lighted to hospital where they calmed everything down but ended up having op that afternoon.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 29/04/2025 10:40

I had no issues at all - no bleeds or anything - so they waited until 39+1 for mine

Lotsofthings · 29/04/2025 10:46

I had some light bleeding at 35weeks went to hospital for check and they wouldn’t let me leave in case I haemorrhaged out, had two weeks in hospital waiting to get to 37+1.

qwertylal · 29/04/2025 16:24

Just to add, the reason I went to hospital at 36 weeks for bed rest until C section at 38 weeks was because I live 25 min drive from the hospital - which they deemed too far to be able to stay at home. Thankfully I had no dramas at all during the pregnancy but I’m glad they took all necessary precautions.

Fluffydino21 · 03/05/2025 13:03

@esunny im going through the same thing! Had never even heard of this until my scan yesterday and been really tearful since. I’m also due in September.

It sounds like you were given more information than I was. My sonographer was very casual about it and just said I needed to come back at 32 weeks. It was only when I googled that I started to panic. Were you given any advice about things to stop doing?

Costacookie · 03/05/2025 13:15

Booked in for 39 weeks but ended up with an emergency section after a bleed at 35 weeks. Luckily I lived close to the hospital.

Is yours low lying only or also partially/completely covering? At my 20 week scan when sonographer identified it they said I’d be booked in to see consultant soon after to discuss and ask any questions, which I was. Can you ask them if you can have an appointment with someone?

With me they advised no exercise apart from
walking, no sex, no pelvic floor exercises (which seems over cautious!) and to come straight into hospital if any bleed at all even small. I’d been following this anyway just in case before I heard from consultant.

Please don’t worry, maybe do the above so you’re doing everything you can and they may well be less cautious (online it often says just no strenuous exercise for example). But definitely do push to speak to an expert so you can understand the situation and next steps.

If it’s only low lying then (dependent on position and anything else specific to your situation) in 90% cases the placenta will move up by 32/36 weeks (well, the womb expands and the placenta moves up with it)

Fluffydino21 · 05/05/2025 08:58

Thank you @Boggartdreams This is really helpful. Was yours low lying or covering?

The sonographer talked about it so casually at the time I don’t even remember exactly what she said. I think covering, my partner says low lying. And it’s not in the notes in any clear way. It wasn’t a complication I was aware of going into the scan so didn’t ask a lot of questions. Confusingly in the scan she said it was anterior and then the notes say posterior…

im seeing my midwife on Wednesday so will ask her if I can speak with someone.

Fluffydino21 · 05/05/2025 09:02

This may be just wishful thinking on my part but I read somewhere that having a very full bladder at the 20 week scan can actually lead to wrong diagnoses of placenta previa.

Has anyone else heard this / found this?

I had gone completely overboard on the water drinking before my scan tbh. I really wish I could do it again to make sure and speak to someone in more detail.

Tiswa · 05/05/2025 09:03

I was 38+1 with mine they only did c sections on Thursday and Tuesday and I was t allowed over 39 weeks. The Thursday had a clearer schedule so in I was booked (ended up being a really quiet day actually only 2 c sections the whole day)
went in to give blood samples every week 3 weeks before so they could cross match blood (didn’t need it) and that was it

she was quite big actually for 38+1 7lb2

Tiswa · 05/05/2025 09:04

a lot move up between 20-34 weeks though from memory

Mine covers my cervix by 6mm (so only partially) and they like it to be at least 2cm away from cervix to be safe to give birth vaginally at my trust.

My sonographer was quite casual too, I guess they’re used to seeing all kinds of things. They also did say no travel via plane and best not to travel by other means anywhere remote where you can’t easily get to hospital if you bleed.

Don’t be afraid to clearly say what you want - to speak to consultant for specific advice in your situation etc, so you can advocate for yourself and baby if you need to.

im sure everything will be fine Flowers

So sorry for the late reply! No j wasn’t given any advice except if I bleed to go straight into hospital. The scanning lady scanned me again after 20 weeks and was adamant it wouldn’t move. Waiting for my 32 week scan now to see if it’s moved! X

No problem at all, thank you for taking the time to reply. I hope you get some good news at the 32 week scan! My scan is 5 weeks away this week
