Brown bleeding - 14 weeks - anyone?

I have had pain for a few days thinking it was possibly a uti. I went too GP out of hours who said no urine infection.

I then began having back pain and still burning when urinating etc, but this morning I woike up and was bleeding (brown blood) so went back today. They again tested urine and said it was clear.

they offered no assistance in relation to the bleeding. No examination etc. just that it could be a miscarriage .. could Not be but that there is no provision locally toi scan for a suspected miscarriage - and the only time a scan would be performed is if I believe I have miscarried to check it is complete .

it has made my anxiety horrendous. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I did bleed at aroiund 5 weeks, 6 weeks and 7 weeks. Each time nocause was found. I bled esrly in my last pregnancy too but not at all in the second trimester.

Have you spoken to midwife to book a scan? GPs generally useless in pregnancy. Brown blood usually old, might be a SCH resolving itself x

Rainbowchasing2022 · 21/04/2025 19:18

Wouldn’t a sch show on a scan though? I had three early scans and the feting scan and nothing was mentioned at all unless they can be missed?

i haven’t gilt a direct number for my midwife and haven’t been able to contact them today or all weekend as it’s bank holiday :( I will defo try and speak to them tomorrow though. Just really hoping they’re more use than the GP xx

i bled from 6-11 weeks. 2 scans at 6 &8 weeks showed no reason for bleeding, only the one at 10 weeks showed a large SCH. Yes they can be missed, small or they can develop later on.

You’ll have a book of numbers, some include wards and units which will speak to you out of hours, and maternity or triage numbers. Just keep calling first thing in the morning.

@Rainbowchasing2022 do you have an EPU in your hospital?

Rainbowchasing2022 · 21/04/2025 19:49

Thank you ladies

it is reassuring in a way it could have been missed and could still be a possibility I suppose. I just keep thinking the worst. We have lost two already so struggling to find positivity

Locally the system is terrible. EPU cover pregnancy up to 12w6d .. then there is nothing at all in place to cover the gap from that to 16 weeks where you can access a maternity assessment unit. The advice is anything needed in that gap is dealt with by community midwife / GP / A&E. the GP hasn’t been any help on both occasions. I can try the community midwife tomorrow but have a feeling she’ll be of little use and I really don’t want to be sat in a&e for hours for a pregnancy related issue when they shouldn’t have to deal with that :(

@Xwx1010 thank you I will look at the link now xx

Most EPAUs won’t cover you at 15/16weeks. It’s midwifery services now. If you aren’t getting the care you need try and raise it with the midwifery unit lead/sister. Really would not recommend A&E unless it is an emergency, they are not usually equipped to respond to what you will need. Keep pushing with the midwife for a scan.

Rainbowchasing2022 · 21/04/2025 20:27

I am I only 14w3d currently. Although stuck in the gap being covered by no one. I will try the community midwife although I don’t think they’ll be able to do a lot xx

Don’t you have a maternity triage number? Mine is open 24/7 attached to a ward. Albeit they would probably just book me in in a few days for a scan not necessarily do it asap if it’s not red bleeding with pain etc. The community midwife can book you a scan.
if they are not playing ball, I’d complain and book in privately for reassurance but you should not be in ‘limbo’. You are under antenatal midwifery services at your gestation.

Rainbowchasing2022 · 21/04/2025 20:45

I tried the triage yesterday and they advised I was too early to be under those which I found strange as their number is the number provided within the notes.

it seems bizarre to have a service where you have weeks of no support, and technically people in the first trimester have more access too care than those in the early second xx

I imagine it’s because there are higher rates of MC and ectopic pregnancy risks in EP. Having had 3 losses myself I’ve had to use them repeatedly.

Rainbowchasing2022 · 21/04/2025 21:01

Possibly. Sadly used them for our two losses and the threatened MC with our sons pregnancy x

Just to reassure you I had sporadic red bleeding on and off for my first pregnancy and he is completely fine, it was only light bleeding now and again.
I think brown is a good sign that there's not fresh bleeding.
