Preeclampsia? What do I do?

Hi.
I was feeling shitty whole day today and my feet look more swollen than usual. Currently 34 weeks pregnant.
did home urine test for protein and this was the results. I’m freaking out. Shall I be worried?

Preeclampsia? What do I do?

Call your midwife, maternity unit or 111

Meceme · 10/04/2025 18:59

Contact your midwife or hospital. Pre-eclampsia can be serious and needs checking. Hopefully you'll only need rest and monitoring but it could mean an admission to hospital.
My eclampsia meant my daughter was born at 30 weeks weighing 2 lb 5 oz (she's 30 and fine now).
Catching it early helps. Please get it checked.

I’m alone at home with my toddler (3 years old) and have no one to leave him with. And the thought of being admitted to hospital and leaving him is just makes me panic. How quickly pre-eclampsia can progress?

My only symptoms were feeling slightly fluey and a bit of swelling. Other than that I felt fine so Im a bit overboard about telling people to check any bp/protein issues.
Hope all is well with you x

Nikolite · 10/04/2025 19:02

Has anyone ever had a green results and ended up not being pre-eclampsia?

You need to get checked. You have no idea what’s going on inside.
My PE was picked up at a routine appt. Baby was born weighing just 4lb at 36 weeks.

Can I ask how were you treated for it? Did you have to stay at the hospital and for how long? The thought of that terrifies me and leaving my other baby alone.

What was the point of taking the test if you are not going to do anything about the results?

SnowFrogJelly · 10/04/2025 19:04

You should definitely call your midwife.. have you checked your BP

Meceme · 10/04/2025 19:06

Ring your midwife/hospital and ask. You'll get much better advice than here.
It may not be pre-eclampsia but its better to check. If it is, and is caught early, it can be treated with rest and monitoring visits from midwife at home.

SnowFrogJelly · 10/04/2025 19:06

I had pre eclampsia at 35 weeks and had to be admitted for a caesarean.. is there no one who can look after your toddler?

My BP is 113/72.

The morning I first had protein in my urine I was made to deliver that evening (EMCS) as it had developed into HELLP syndrome. Please go to the hospital ASAP. I almost had a stroke and apparently baby stopped moving as much within hours

Dibdabble · 10/04/2025 19:12

Pre eclampsia isn’t diagnosed from a urine test alone, that shows a small amount closer to a trace which may well come under the normal threshold if you were to have the sample sent off. Do you have a headache or any visual disturbances? You need an antenatal check urgently, blood pressure in particular. I’m not sure why you would do a home test at all tbh, if you feel something’s not right see a medical professional rather than perform random tests at home.

Meceme · 10/04/2025 19:13

It was my first baby. I was immediately admitted and spent the next 24 hours confined to bed with a nurse sitting by me, taking blood pressure every 15 minutes (all day and night), they gave me steroids to mature the babies lungs and were hopeful that, with full bedrest in hospital, I'd manage to stay until full gestation.
Unfortunately, I became more ill and they had to deliver by emergency section 6 days later at 30 weeks. If they hadn't I would have died.
I'm not saying this to scare you. You will probably be absolutely fine but you do need to be checked. The earlier it is caught, the better the outcome.
Sending you all best wishes xxxx

AnxiousSandwich · 10/04/2025 19:17

I do think you should call and get a full assessment but try not to panic. That’s a trace amount of protein and your blood pressure is fine. So if it is pre-eclampsia you’d be likely sent home to monitor your symptoms. They would want to sent your urine off to be checked though.

Do you have a severe headache, any upper abdominal pain - especially on your right side? Any swelling to your hands and face?

As a midwife I would have sent the urine off, done an antenatal check and let you go home. We then would have escalated it if the results were abnormal.

No swelling to my hands or face, just feet. No headache. But I did have an abdominal pain throughout the whole day today. It’s gone now.

Have you now called your midwife/maternity unit?

AnxiousSandwich · 10/04/2025 19:34

Do you have more discharge than normal? That can cause contamination sometimes..
I would recommend you get seen ASAP as you are concerned though. How are baby’s movements?

Nikolite · 10/04/2025 19:43

I’m going to call maternity unit shortly, just trying to call my husbands relatives if they could come over tonight if I have to go in.
baby movements were really strong throughout the whole day, a bit quiet now.

i Will be honest, I was eating allot of chocolates in the last couple of weeks and I wonder if that triggered protein to show in my urine. Does anyone know if it could be connected?

OP posts:
Overthebow · 10/04/2025 19:58

Glad you are calling maternity. I had no symptoms at all apart from blood pressure and the protein test and had pre-eclampsia. It can come on really quickly and is really dangerous for mother and baby. Always get checked out if uncertain.

No - it isn’t the chocolate

Nikolite · 10/04/2025 20:02

I did another one and now it’s between yellow ans green.

I’m 34 weeks and I’ve had a few tests with trace. Did you do mid stream or from the start? If you do from the start, you might have picked up some discharge etc. my midwife wasn’t concerned as I had no headache and bp was normal. I’d give them a call to be sure. My feet are bit swollen but I’ve put that down to the heat and being on my feet chasing a toddler about.

QueenOfWeeds · 10/04/2025 20:16

@Nikolite you need to phone triage. Explain you have a toddler with you - they will either tell you to wait for childcare and then come straight in, or tell you to come in and bring them with you. It could be nothing but it could be really serious - you need a medic to tell you which it is rather than just hoping for the best.
