What do I need for the baby as first time mom

I know this is asked all the time but I'm not sure what I need as first time mum. I managed to create the below list based on ...some reading but it may be not very accurate so any help please is appreciated

What i plan to buy:
Cot ( I liked one that can become a todler bed)
Pram - with carrycot and seat for later
Pajamas ( will be summer so I suppose baby can go out also wearing those ?)
Nappies, some sort of rash cream and bath gel
Bottles and milk if i can't breastfeed
Some small toys ?
Something to put on top of chest of drawers to change
Some hygiene things like brush, small scissor and stuff

I don't plan to get the below:
Sling - with good pushchair I don't see the point)
Baby monitor / noise machine - small flat no need for monitor
Fancy tiny outfits that will be worn once
Wet wipe warmer
Fancy changing bags ( any bag can be changing bag)
Car seat as I don't drive or have a car.

Get a car seat.
You might not drive but you will most likely use cars frequently - taxi home from the hospital for a start.
I recommend getting a little bouncy seat. That was probably my most used baby equipment.

Wishing4Snow · 09/02/2025 11:56

I would add:

Dummies (unless you want to go without). I found them very helpful with my DS.
Muslins (for sick and dribble!).
Sterliser for bottles.

I highly recommend a sling but a lot sling library’s do free/ cheap hire for early weeks. If your baby doesn’t like being put down it will save your sanity.
The baby bjorn bouncy chair is great if you can get a second hand one!
Will baby go straight into the cot or will you get a crib for when it’s newborn?
My advice is get what you can second hand as it’s never used for long and often what you think you will need is not what your baby will like, for instance I never used the carrycot on the pram after a couple of weeks old as my babies hated lying flat, so they stayed in the carrier until they were six months.

Yes, so many muslins and bibs!

JimHalpertsWife · 09/02/2025 11:59

How will you bring baby home from the hospital? If its a taxi or a lift from someone then you will need a carseat.

Where will the baby sleep during the daytime?

Pickandmixusername · 09/02/2025 11:59

They sometimes won't let you leave hospital without a car seat, so worth checking their policy.

Sling is fine not to buy, however, one of mine hated her pushchair but loved the sling, so I ended up using that more.

Agree that pjs / babygros are fine for summer baby.

The rest all sounds fine to me. Bottles are a good idea too I think. I planned to bf both of mine but ended up having to use bottles with both (exclusively pumped for one of mine and mix fed the other). Some people say they wouldn't buy bottles in advance as they didn't want to give themselves the option, but that sounds massively overzealous to me

You can never have enough! 😂

Needmorelego · 09/02/2025 12:01

@Alegra8176 I just had a basic bouncy seat. It was just somewhere for my baby to sit in when awake and I was doing something and couldn't be holding her (ie eating, cooking etc) or she simply liked to sit in it and watch the world go by.
The type I had could also lay flat so she would nap in it.

I never used any for my 4.

Baby will have to get used to the pram 😃. Jokes aside for short walks maybe it not a bad idea for when the baby is very little and light but I don't think I can carry him when older like this .
The cot thing is all in one - it's next to me, then cot for up to 18m and then can be a toddler bed.

I never had a bouncy seat for either of mine and didn't miss it

Iloveeverycat · 09/02/2025 12:04

Are you getting a moses basket so you can keep baby with you in the day. Then can carry to bedroom later.

Out of curiosity...... when you were doing something like eating dinner and your baby was awake - what did you do with them? Where did you put them?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 09/02/2025 12:05

When my mother came to visit just before the DC were born she asked 'where are they going during the day?'. DH and I just hadn't thought of that.

We bought a playpen that had a removable crib level so they were sleeping at about waist level and a Moses basket.

A quilt of blanket you can put on the floor when you visit people so they have something to roll around on that is clean.

Usually on a blanket or play gym on the floor. We had carpet not hardwood or anything, which I think helped! We also had very little counter space and I never especially wanted mine in a bouncy chair on the kitchen counter.

I also don't really enjoy cooking, so rarely do anything too complicated! If I did, I'd wait till nap time

Hayley1256 · 09/02/2025 12:10

Baby bouncer
Lots if bibs
Baby grows
Pump if breast feeding
Toys that attach to pram
Changing mat ( doesn't to go on top of drawers)
Lots of cotton wool
Childs farm Baby bubble bath
Changing bag as they have good compartments
Steriliser
Tommy tippee machine if bottle feeding

Needmorelego · 09/02/2025 12:12

@Pickandmixusername I had a blanket and playmat too but sometimes she liked to be more "sat up" so she could watch what I was doing.
(by cooking I meant mostly heating things up in the microwave..... I hate cooking 😁)

lets see

vest and sleepsuits are what they wear most of the time for first few months .Get plenty as they sometimes spit up or nappies leak. Generally babies wear one more layer than you as they struggle to keep warm. So unless its hot a warm day would say be for a girl vest/dress maybe a cardigan if theres a breeze or a boy vest t shirt shorts.

newborn hats and dribble bibs

ok bottles if you plan on breastfeeding just remember it takes practice and some times you need to ask for advice. Try for a few weeks unless you are advised by health care worker to do otherwise. My first daughter took like a duck to water but my second i tried for a month to see if i could get her to latch but no luck thats when i switched to bottles. So you can get bottles/electric steriliser but you wont need to get milk yet unless you plan on formula feeding. But do get a electric breast pump its great when you have to much milk your breasts are swollen. You can store milk in breastmilk bags in the freezer for later. At a month old you can juggle between the two once baby has learnt how to breastfeed. At the moment my third baby has one bottle of expressed milk a day to help me sleep.I dont give to many bottles a day as they can get confused about latching ,i use tommee tippee bottles ,i dont use the tommee tippee steriliser i used that last time it lasted a month.

i got a changing table with storage so nappies/clothes all in reach

a bouncer chair is super useful somewhere to put baby down say like when your cooking

bedding one cot sized flat sheet and cellular blanket is recommended ,put babies feet at bottom of bed and tuck in with these two layers

playmats are good

gripe water or infacol are good they sometimes get upset from trapped gas but each baby is different .With mine whilst gripe water worked on one it didnt on the other

Some short sleeved bodysuits (vests) that could be worn on their own for a summer baby - long sleeved suits might be too warm depending on the weather

A bouncy seat or rocker of some kind, both mine liked the vibrating type ones and they're so handy to be able to put them down somewhere safe for a little while.

Sling or carrier you can see how you go, I had a cheap one for using in the house because my eldest especially was a Velcro baby.

A crib or Moses basket is useful when they're little so you can put them down in the living room during the day. You can have them right next to your bed too at night.
You could also use your pram for daytime naps if you have a lie down flat option.

If you're going to be using taxis at all you'll need a car seat but you could maybe borrow one if you think you might just use one for getting home from hospital

I wouldn't bother with many toys, you won't need them for a few weeks and you might get some as gifts

Washcloths for the baby

A baby bath - usually you can get these second hand but they are handy

Jesus. Do people actually do this??

Pickandmixusername · 09/02/2025 12:17

Should also add that with my dc2 who was exclusively fed breast milk in a bottle, I had to invest in a fancy double breast pump and one of those terribly attractive bra things to hold it on with. Worked really well though

I was curious about this. My bouncy chair lived on the floor - I never put it on a counter or table.

Yes! I knew a few people who did this. I know it's probably fine, but I just didn't like it for mine.

i couldn't put mine on a counter i'd be to nervous. My first baby really liked to bounce in her chair so it would move .What if it slides off ,so i always put bouncer chairs on the floor
