Nursing covers for discreet breastfeeding

As a shy person, I would like to breastfeed in public (including in front of my family and friends and in the park etc) but would like to do so discreetly. I know I can use muslins or towels or sheets or pashminas but am considering one of these Bebe au Lait nursing covers which gives full cover as well as space on top to look down at baby:

Anyone had any experience using these? I've found them for sale at maternityandnursing.co.uk/Bebe_au_Lait_Nursing_Covers-details.aspx

Thanks,
O

The covers at
www.bebechic.co.uk
are worth a look.
They're muted, well made and half the price of the American covers.

All those weirdy breastfeeding aprons are bloody ugly.

What a pashmina if you're a bit shy?

i'm sure i'd agree that the tent is unnecessary for small babies but i have to say that my friend's 9month old who is BLW at the moment and still feeding quite a bit is a very bright and inquisitive little thing and VERY inclined to pulling off and looking around at everybody every few minutes unless in a darkened room or at least obscured from all the interesting things to look at.

i reckon that "covering up" has it's place when it's the right thing for the mother and baby.

(NB, memey if you want to promote your website / products on MN, pay the £30 to advertise here and don't resurrect threads that are two years old )

This woman has a brilliant series of no-nonsense clips on youtube that show you how to breastfeeed discreetly in public using slings, shawls, double shirts -- all sorts of props and none.

Personally, I think that if the OP thinks she's going to feel more comfortable BFing in public with a product like the bebe au lait, then it's better to get it and try it out, than fuss with scarves, muslns, double tops etc just because people here think she shouldn't have to worry about public feeding or embarrassment. The fact is, she is worried about public feeding, and this is potential solution. So go for it - why not? If it makes you feel confident about feeding no matter what you happen to be wearing and where you happen to be, then that has to be good thing. Far better to do that than feel reluctant and embarrassed. And if it doesn't work out, or you decide you feel fine without it, sell it on ebay.

LadyBee, the OP's child is now nearly 2 and I suspect she solved the problem long ago

this thread was resurrecvted by someone trying to promote their own nursing cover business

oh funny - I really should pay attention to dates

Bumbleconfusus · 26/03/2010 09:10

for anyone else who happens to be looking at this thread and thinking of getting one - I think they're great and just got one yesterday after seeing them on an american tv programme. My DD is 7 weeks old and I have been too afraid to go out much incase she needs fed in between. Yes nursing tops are a good idea but then you have to buy many and its expensive, rather than just 1 thing. Its not just about wanting to hide nipples, its about wanting to hide all flesh -and this isn't to say I'm ashamed of bfing, its to say I want all my flesh covered up- I wouldn't ever wear a low cut top so I'm not willing to show anything for any other reason either.

the idea of vest under clothing to hoik down is so clever! Thanks for the idea.
also really good idea of using 'baby bandeau'...has stopped me spending/wasting money on covers which are definitely quite expensive!
thanks to all those who've posted ideas

I used a Baby Au Lait cover, Despite all the pro-feeding talk it can be daunting at first to feed in public and if a cover gives you some piece of mind then all the better.

I found it very useful in busy social places and also when out with extended family. Feeding is intimate and I didn't particular want to share the experience with Great Uncle Alfie. Although you can feed discreetly my son was a nosey feeder so would be on and off the nipple a lot trying to have a look around. The cover helped him concerntrate on the job at hand. After a few months I used it less as I got more comfortable feeding in public and my son got better at it but i'm glad I bought it and would definately recommend it to first timers.

PickleSarnie · 24/08/2010 06:36

I bought one of those bebe au lait covers until the thought of drawing even more attention to myself with them than a bit of nip scared me. So I think I'll get one of these instead www.mamascarf.co.uk

I shouldn't have to feel like I should cover up but, unfortunately, there were always be judgypanted people (usually the ones who think nothing of leering over boobs on page3) that will judge and I have neither the desire or ability to try and single handedly change their ridiculous opinions.

Although, someone posted this www.moboleez.com/ on another thread which as someone said looks like you're feeding small mexicans! Awesome!
