Is it to early to book at scan around 7weeks pregnant. Anyone else had one that early?

We want to book a scan that will place me around 7 weeks I think. I ovulated 28th/29th December and first positive 6th of January.

Is that enough time to see something and get reassurance? Thanks.

Yes, I had one at 7 weeks after miscarriages. We paid privately, and it was a dildo cam 🤢
good luck 😊💐

MissBattleaxe · 28/01/2025 21:16

You will barely be able to see anything that early and if you can't, you'll worry. I'd leave it until there's more to go on.

Pigsinblankets13 · 28/01/2025 21:25

I'd probably wait til 8 weeks if I were you x

tangobravo · 28/01/2025 21:27

If you can hang on just another week then 8 weeks is much better! I understand the feeling though

mummymummymummummum · 28/01/2025 21:28

I several had at 6 weeks, but often had to go back a week later to double check (all NHS). They are internal scans, so not a lovely experience! 7 weeks is probably fine if you’re going private. Or, better yet, be led by what the clinic recommend.

MrsBP15 · 28/01/2025 21:31

I had a scan at six weeks because of ivf and we saw a teeny tiny heartbeat 💓 was hugely reassuring following some bleeding but if you want to see more development then I guess wait a little longer?

Itonlytakesaminute · 28/01/2025 21:49

If you have fertility treatment you get offered a scan at 6 weeks so 7 weeks is fine, you don't see much but do get to see a heartbeat 💓

Guineapiggiesmalls · 28/01/2025 21:51

I had one at what I thought was 7 weeks. It was inconclusive and led t0 days of anxiety before I could get a rescan to confirm all was alright. If you can, I’d wait another week.

dreamerkr · 28/01/2025 21:52

I had one at 7+1 and saw a teeny little heartbeat, it was an abdominal scan, but it actually caused more worry than anything else! It dated me at 6+2 which wasn’t right for me as I was sure when I ovulated. So I definitely would wait until 8 weeks next time (if there’s a next time 😂)! Another scan 2 weeks later actually dated 2 days ahead of my LMP! So I would definitely wait until 8-9 weeks! Good luck x

OptimisticRealist2024 · 28/01/2025 21:53

I ended up having a scan at 6+3 at EPU because of some dodgy cramps and saw a heartbeat 😊 I've decided against paying for private scans this pregnancy but you may still see something, even if it's early.

FrazzledHippy · 28/01/2025 22:04

Following several miscarriages we booked an early private scan, I was dated at 7+something weeks and we saw a little bean and a faint heartbeat.

She's asleep in the next room now, 8 years later . Go for it OP!

Shynslk · 28/01/2025 22:12

We were 7+4 weeks when we had an early scan due to bleeding at 5 weeks. Epu wouldn't see us at 5 weeks so we decided to book a private scan later on. We saw a little blob and the heartbeat on the scan, was definitely the reassurance that we were after. If I was a little more patient I would've waited until I was 8 weeks to see something a bit more clearer, but was still so nice to see.

NewMummaBear1 · 28/01/2025 22:17

I had an internal private scan at 7 weeks after having some bleeding and EPU advising to just monitor for a week, we saw his little heartbeat, it was very reassuring x

sel2223 · 28/01/2025 22:44

Definitely wait another week or 2 if you can.

Not only will there be more to see at 8 weeks, but this is also the point at which the odds of MC drop significantly.

Pyjamatimenow · 28/01/2025 22:50

I was told by EPU Before 12 weeks what you see one day on a scan might be totally different to the next even with a heartbeat so personally I wouldn’t be reassured by a private scan.

Baby20202025 · 28/01/2025 23:00

@Pyjamatimenow well everyone is different. I had a scan with my first at 7 weeks 3 days due to spotting and all was perfect she is now 4. Thanks for your input though.

I think what @Pyjamatimenow was meaning is that an early scan is only ever a snapshot in time and can't give any guarantees, you could have a great scan at 7 weeks then everything change the very next day. Some people will be reassured just by knowing all is OK in that moment, other the reassurance will be very short lived so an early scan may not be worth it for them.

Although weeks 6-8 are the highest rush, you're still more likely to have a successful pregnancy than not - I think it's 78% chance of a successful pregnancy once you've seen a HB between 6 and 8 weeks then 98% chance of a successful pregnancy once you've seen a HB over 8 weeks (it's even better over 10 weeks - 99.4%)

Chongawonga · 28/01/2025 23:34

I had an early scan at 6 weeks and it was a blob with a heart beat, at 9 weeks it had little limbs and a head etc that you can make out, so big changes happen rather fast early on. I personally would try to wait until at least 8 weeks so you can see more.

Blue2020 · 29/01/2025 15:08

I had a scan at epu at 8+0 due to intense pain, they couldn’t see a heartbeat abdominally, luckily did when it switched to transvaginal. I think there was an issue due to it being a tilted uterus with having already had a baby last time (no issues with a tilted uterus with my son in the previous pregnancy). So I guess if the private place offered transvaginal, but if they only offered abdominal it could have caused worry for days for me.

Privately I have only been to them at 9-10weeks. This is over three pregnancies- first was a mmc I had a 9+0 week private scan, second I had a private scan at 9+2 due to anxiety from the first pregnancy, third which is my current pregnancy I had epu at 8+0 and also private at 10+3 due to symptoms disappearing and being quite ill/antibiotics).

Firestonlee · 29/01/2025 18:39

I don’t really agree with people saying for you to wait.
I had my first scan at EPU at 5 weeks 6 days and we got a heartbeat and measurements all good.
it doesn’t help with my anxiety that much but it was a lovely surprise after consecutive miscarriages.
i get scans every couple of weeks on the nhs and crapping myself every time but you need to do what is best for you x

The reason people advise to wait is that there is no guarantee of a heartbeat before 7 weeks, and it's even less likely before 6 weeks - just a quick search on here will show you many, many threads created by women where their anxiety is absolutely through the roof after an inconclusive early scan which provided them with anything but reassurance (I had one myself when i thought i was 8+2 but actually only measured 6+1)

It's great that you were lucky and saw an early heartbeat but ask yourself how you would have felt if you didn't and had to wait another 2 weeks for a repeat to see if everything was OK or not.

Plus weeks 6-8 are the highest risk for miscarriage in pregnancy so it's a worrying time whether you see a heartbeat in that time or not. After 8 weeks, the risk drops to less than 2%.

So, that's why people are saying it would be better to wait.

Squidtentacles · 29/01/2025 19:29

I had an early scan with both my pregnancies. One was really positive, the other was not so much. The latter one, we saw a heartbeat, but the embryo was measuring 12 days behind LMP dates. I don't ovulate late and I had a positive test quite early on, so it was a worry. 4 weeks later, I miscarried. As I was just a few days away from my dating scan when I finally miscarried, I was so glad I went for that early scan. It prepared me for what was to come. Had I not had an early private scan, I wouldn't have had 4 weeks to emotionally prepare for a miscarriage, it would have come as a shock!
Therefore, I'll definitely be having early scans again and I'm all for them, after having both good and bad outcomes.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 29/01/2025 22:11

You should really see the heartbeat from 5-6 weeks assuming your dates are correct. 7 weeks is not too early, even if your dates are out by a week....

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 29/01/2025 22:14

The NHS will scan you at 12 weeks.

If you see a strong heartbeat on an early scan, and measurements are within range then that is actually a really positive thing, and reassuring. Yes, things can still go wrong but much less likely.
