How soon can I take my baby out?

How soon after my baby's born is it okay to take it out? How soon after can my partner take it out? Not on a trek but for a stroll...?

Thanks
MM

As above. I saw a little tiny baby in a sling out in the park today! Why is there no broody emoticon?

Thomcat · 05/05/2008 21:17

LOL stuffitall!

Divastrop · 05/05/2008 21:18

i took dc3,4 and 5 to the supermarket the day i got out of hospital.i had no choice,i needed stuff

PortAndLemon · 05/05/2008 21:20

Whenever you like. DD was born on Sunday and we took her out the next day.

PinkTulips · 05/05/2008 21:23

dd was exactly one week when we went for a major shopping trip for all the things i hadn't realised we'd need (baby bath, many many more maternity pads, lots more babygros and blankets thanks to reflux, etc ). after that went out every day with her for at least a half hour. would have gone out sooner but she was jaundiced and not feeding well.

ds was 2 days old when we went to the registry office with him and likesise i went out with him constantly, think he was about 2 weeks when we took him to the beach for the first time.

if you're having a hospital birth their first trip out will be whenever you bring them home

IdrisTheDragon · 05/05/2008 21:26

I think with DS he was about 4 days old. I walked very slowly .

With DD we definitely went out to see friends when she was 3 days old and probably went for walks "around the block" sooner than that.

It does make a difference on the sort of delivery you have - the more intervention, the harder it is to get around sooner, IME.

blinkingthreetimes · 05/05/2008 21:28

I took mine out when she was 29 hours old ,only for a quick walk to my mum's and to try out my new pram

I do think I was running on adreniline though cos I didn't venture out for about a week after that

MinkyBorage · 05/05/2008 21:29

I took my first baby to Waitrose when she was four days old, and was glowing with pride as the checkout girl admired my beautiful girl, as I hung all the bags from the handles, not knowing that prams topple with too much weight. And over the pram went, baby and all. Thankfully she slept though the whole thing and was none the wiser of my idiocy.

The shame, it was awful.

I ran home and stayed in for a week.

sweetkitty · 05/05/2008 21:30

This one will be out in the garden the day she is born if it's nice I'm not sitting in on a nice day.

onepieceoflollipop · 05/05/2008 21:30

Wherever you go lots of people are likely to approach you to a) demand to know age of tiny baby b) say "ooh that's very young do you think he/she will be ok?

(well, yes, probably it is only Sainsbury's/duck pond/school) Go away and mind your own business. (not all of you on this thread, I mean disapproving passers-by.

PinkTulips · 05/05/2008 21:36

really onepiece? i never got that, i got lots of 'ohh he/she is tiny. you're brave to be out, i never managed it. well done?' but never any one second guessing me... that said had both mine in the west of ireland where the older ladies were all out working the fields the day they had their babies if they're to be believed

ingles2 · 05/05/2008 21:39

How exciting Monkeysmama....
I think I took my first out properly after about 3 days...
(he did do a little visit to Waitrose on the way home)
no2 was in the cafe of the swimming pool the morning he was born

serenity · 05/05/2008 22:02

DS1, can't remember but we went to Bfs house when DS2 was less than a day old because I missed DS1 and couldn't wait for her to bring him home - ended up staying for lunch. I took DD on the school run at 2 days old just to show her off left her at home for the next two weeks (with DH of course)

LyraSilvertongue · 05/05/2008 22:05

DS1 was born in August and we took him for a stroll by the river on a lovely sunny day when he was 4 days old. Felt so odd going out pushing a pram with a real baby in it

LyraSilvertongue · 05/05/2008 22:07

Everybody wanted to know how old he was, he was treated like royalty. A Japanese tourist even took a picture of him

seeker · 05/05/2008 22:16

my dd went to Tescos on day 2. Ds went to pick his big sister up from a party at 6 hours.

But I had easy labours and was as high as a kite both times. I think there is a lot to be said for holing up in your bedroom with the baby for 14 days and receiving admiring visitors in a charming bed jacket (you, not them) only when you feel like it and for as long as you feel like it. If you can't be a diva when you've just given birth when can you be?

As for partner taking baby out - as soon as possible. Bearing in mind that you will be feeding practically continuously at first any half an hour when he can take the baby out so you can have a shower and a cup of tea in peace will be a massive bonus.

purpleduck · 05/05/2008 22:54

Oh god
We took ds (first born) out when he was days old.
I remember sobbing into dhs shoulder in the shopping center. People were whizzing about far too quickly, and they got TOO CLOSE.

I was a wreck

Good Luck

Poledra · 05/05/2008 22:56

DD1 didn't get out till 5 days (in hospital till then). DD2 out the next day for a (short!) stroll.
Marvellous MIL took DD1 out for a 2-hour walk when she was 14 days old - was bloody great to get uninterrupted sleep!!

I couldn't move out of the house until about ten days after birth - but baby went out with dh after three days, once we got home from the hospital. However, I was so ill after a very intervened birth that it took a long time for me to be able to go out and push the pram - don't expect too much of yourself! Not everyone is lucky enough to be out shopping hours after birth.

RambleOn · 05/05/2008 23:47

Jeez - I didn't leave the house for about 4 weeks

disneystar · 06/05/2008 06:39

i was taking my other son to nursery at 1pm same day

i suffered for it though i became aneamic and suffered huge blood loss
