Cyst on ovary? Cancer scare

Kayannie123 · 16/01/2025 15:46

Hi guys,
im just looking to get some advise. Have anyone else had an ovarian cyst? I’ve had mine for around 6 years now and since I’ve been pregnant it’s grown quite a lot. I’ve seen the gynaecologist a few times to have it monitored. I’m now at the point where the cyst has grown quite large. I’m feeling abitworried now because the gynaecologist I’ve seen today has mentioned you can can’t rule cancer out due to the fact that’s it’s been growing. I told her that I have been told by other people that’s been growing due to the pregnancy hormones. I’ve now had my baby and the Cyst is still there. The first gynaecologist told me it’s not cancer so I’ve never been worried until now I’ve seen this doctor today. Has anybody else had a similar experience. (Booked for op have cyst out today) she’s ordered a blood test and it’s says LFP which I’ve googled it and it’s for cancer testing. I have the cyst for 6 years now so surely if it’s cancer I would certainly now about it now. Any advise 😩

Have you had MRI / CT scan done on the cyst?

Kayannie123 · 16/01/2025 18:04

I had an ovarian cyst that weighed 50lb and it was benign.
The doctors said it could have been there for years slowly growing so it’s not always going to be bad news

Meadowfinch · 16/01/2025 18:20

OP I had an ovarian cyst the size of a grapefruit before I collapsed and had an emergency op. My gp refused to accept there was anything wrong.

Your GP is much better, taking it seriously. They have to check for certain it isn't malignant before they operate, no matter how small the chance, because their approach to treatment would be different. They're just making sure.

Good luck.

Cornflakes123 · 16/01/2025 19:27

Hi op. What type of cyst is it ? I have a dermoid cyst , haven’t had my 20 week scan yet so don’t know if it has grown. It was discovered at an ivf appointment.

Otto223 · 16/01/2025 19:28

Like others have said please don’t worry! They are taking it serious which is great. I had a cyst slowly grow for 4 years, they wasnt going to take it out, just monitor it but I pushed I wanted it out before getting pregnant which I then had keyhole surgery for to remove it. After it was biopsied it was benign, the same they told me from my first ultrasound when they found it! It is all just precaution. There is so many type of cysts that can grow on the ovaries and cysts are very common.
Have they you what kind of cyst it is? Mine was a endometrial cyst

Yes pregnancy hormones can cause cysts to grow much quicker, I’ve always been told this by my gynaecologist hence why I pushed for it to be out before I tried for a baby. It’s great they are booking you in for surgery to remove it. But please I would not worry that much ☺️

Hi everyone thought I'd pop in I've also had a cyst which was 17cm so it basically covered my left ovary which had to be removed plus my falopian tube so I know exactly what your going through I don't know how long it had been there but luckily it was benign. My removal went fine but it does take a while to finally get back on your feet but don't rush

tiffxxx · 16/01/2025 20:15

And it's really normal to go through all the emotions I was an absolute wreck

Kayannie123 · 16/01/2025 20:55

@Cornflakes123 hi thanks for the reply, they haven’t told me a certain type they have told me a fluid filled one? Have they told you what size yours in? Hopefully it’s nothing complicated and it’s just a simple one x

Kayannie123 · 16/01/2025 20:57

@tiffxxx hi tiff thanks for the reply. Did yours grow slowly over time? Yes they have told me today I could loose one of my tubes due to the size of it. Mine is around 13cm it did start off like 5cm but has grown since I had my baby. Did you have a ca125 test?

Kayannie123 · 16/01/2025 20:59

@Meadowfinch hi thanks for the reply! Sorry to hear that happened I can imagine that was very painful. Yes they never took mine really seriously in the past but they seem to now it’s got bigger. Can I ask what tests they did for you to check for cancer?

@Kayannie123 thanks at the ivf clinic they said it’s about 3cm and they did those bloods too for cancer. They didn’t seem concerned but at my 12 week scan in the hospital it was noticed too but I didn’t ask what size it was . My last pregnancy was 5 years ago and it was never mentioned during it. So I don’t know how long it’s been there. I might ask them to refer me to gynaecologist. I’ve googled and dermoid cysts can be there from birth and have all sorts of yucky things inside them . They didn’t say what was in it. But there are loads of different types of cysts. I hope yours is a simple one too.

They didn't say how long it had been there and to be honest I had that many tests I couldn't tell you what I had

tiffxxx · 16/01/2025 22:10

I just know they took a lot of blood from me well it felt like loads

They didn't have time.

My gp insisted I had IBS from May until Oct. Then I woke up in agony. Managed to get myself to A&E where I passed out. Came round being prepped for an op because someone had finally done an ultrasound.

I had a dermoid, a nasty kind of cyst that had twisted and turned necrotic. I had a raging abdo infection and sores all up my back by the time I collapsed.

Now I have a hip to hip scar. They took an ovary & tube, and I spent a whole week in women's surgical and six weeks off work.

The NHS can be very quick when necessary. I collapsed at 3.30am and was in surgery at 8. Many thanks to Royal Berks. Just brilliant. Such a relief.

Mine’s was. It had been there for years and started growing rapidly. When it was removed it weighed 6kgs and I had a diagnosis of stage 1A Mucinous ovarian cancer. The larger it would have become the worse the cancer would have been.

Kayannie123 · 17/01/2025 09:31

@Weepixie can I ask how many years you had yours for and how did they test for cancer? I’ve had mine for around 6 years and only started to grow when I got pregnant x

Kayannie123 · 17/01/2025 09:38

@fudgesmummy thanka for the reply, did you have yours taken out? It’s just very worrying and I definitely over think things like this. I’ve had my cyst for around 6 years and nobody seemed bothered about it until now mine is around 13cm is was like 5cm from the start. I was told by like nurses and previous gynaecologist that it’s nothing to worry about it non cancerous and pregnancy hormones will make it grow but now this gynaecologist seems worried 😟

Mooosewoman · 17/01/2025 09:40

There’s a very slow growing cyst called a Granulosa Cell Tumour, which is what I had.

Kayannie123 · 17/01/2025 09:40

@Weepixie sotry to hear this. I hope you had a successful recovery. X

@Mooosewoman hi thanks for the reply, how long did you have yours? They haven’t told me what type mine is only that it’s just filled with fluid? And did yours grow? Thanks

Weepixie · 17/01/2025 10:00

@Kayannie123 I’m fine thank you. I had a huge surgery to remove the cyst, all of my lady bits and pieces, my appendix and my omentum along with lymph nodes. I was basically filleted like a fish and if I could do without something they took it. On the plus side I’ve never needed chemotherapy and Im 10 months away from being discharged from yearly check ups people have to have for 5 years following a cancer diagnosis.

How long had it all gone one prior to it becoming huge? Years. In fact it used to be there at one check up and gone the next for about 6 years. Then one day I realised I was losing weight (it was planned) but my tummy wasn’t. I look pregnant. Not fat. And that was the start of very quick investigations that had me diagnosed with this huge cyst which was removed days later.

I still don’t know enough about various cysts and what’s normal and what isn’t etc but I have learned that every cyst must be investigated and we women must understand that ovarian cancer moves by stealth and the sooner it’s found the better. Not that I’m suggesting you have ovarian cancer.

Kayannie123 · 17/01/2025 10:07

@Weepixie im so sorry to hear that. I’m glad you’re on the way to being recovered and surgery was successful. I’ve mine for around 6 years too and the dr said it’s only grown slowly which is more of a positive sign. It’s still very worrying for me, I’ve only just had a baby so I really can’t think of having anything like this, I’m only 28 so it just really scares me. They never seemed bothered at first and the told me it’s growing now because of the pregnancy hormones so I was never concerned in the beginning

I don’t know how long I had it. It was 10cm x6cm. After it was removed it was sent to be analysed. The result came back as GCT a slow growing ovarian cancer. That was over 10 years ago now.

Kayannie123 · 17/01/2025 10:10

@Mooosewoman hi sorry to hear that. Did you need further treatment, I’ve had mine for 6 years now so I first my cyst when I was 20
