Buying pram for June baby in January sales 😬

I'm quite superstitious but husband has started looking into prams and found a travel system in the January sales that ticks all our boxes. The saving is huge (£700)...but I'm only 15+4.

(We could order it now and get it delivered to my mum and dad's so it wouldn't be in the house.)

Our 20-week scan is 5 February so we're thinking of ordering end of Jan and then we have 21 days to return if we have bad news at scan.

I'd research nore. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it suits all your needs. Have you actually throughly researched it and know your needs? If its a travel system have you checked the safety of the car seat provided? Like actually checked it not just read a few reviews. Or if it doesn't have a car seat what car seat it's compatible with?

We spent alot of money on a travel system of sorts (seperate car seat but compatible with the system). In hindsight i'd have got a safer car seat and bought an out n about nipper. Probably would have saved myself a fortune.

Also to note depending on what travel system.you buy some are always on offer i.e cossatto and mamas and papas.

Maybe check the return policy .. I am 25 weeks now and also very tempted to purchase now due to winter sale . I am due in april so not long left I guess

JimHalpertsWife · 04/01/2025 15:43

Owning the pram 100% will not affect the outcome of the 20 week scan.

batt3nb3rg · 04/01/2025 15:47

I'm probably not a good person to be commenting, as I bought a second-hand pram (too good a deal to pass up!) before I was even pregnant, and it was safely stored under the bed for a good while before being used. I just never thought that if the worst happened, my devastation would be in any way amplified by something so small in comparison as having a pram in the house. And I'd shut down anyone starting on any superstitious guff about "bad luck" - it's such a nasty thing to say if you think about it for more than ten seconds.

Please share your excitement about your pram, OP, with a pram obsessive! What have you decided on?

@Antsinmypantsneedtodance We've done some research and asked around for recommendations, checked out lots and lots of reviews - it's a Cosatto bundle with everything including two car seat bases as well as the carrier, bassinet and everything. I need something sturdy as I walk everywhere and husband will have the car at work, so we want to buy new and invest in decent kit.

I'm not a superstitious person so I would just buy it. And kindly and without being harsh at all - things can and do go 'wrong' at any point, that's out of most people's control, buying a pram or not won't change that, so just relax and enjoy it!

Clocloxx · 04/01/2025 15:53

I love the fabrics on Cosattos, they definitely stand out in a same-y market. Prams are such a personal thing, I fell in love with Uppababy in John Lewis and never looked back, they have my lifelong loyalty. If you feel the same about Cosatto, you should get it delivered to your house, set it up in your kitchen or hallway or wherever you have space, and enjoy looking at it and touching it and imagining your little one in it for the next few months.

And don't forget to check it fits in your boot and isn't a pain to get in and out before you take all the plastic off!

I wasn't going to even look at buying anything (at all!) until I was 20 weeks but I married An Organised Person so the last two weeks have been spent doing research 🥴😂 The return policy is 30 days so as long as we can get one to arrive end of January then if we have bad news at the scan, at least we'd get a refund.

Hope everything goes well for you!

After losing my last baby at 21 weeks I would not buy it.
This time around the only brand new big things I’m buying are a car seat and mattress, m most other things can be found second hand in good condition

YouveGotAFastCar · 04/01/2025 17:06

I’d buy it and keep it at home. It’s a superstition.

I wouldn’t use a Cossato car seat; though, although the infant seats are okay.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/01/2025 17:07

Cosatto is a wonderful brand we've had their buggys.
I was very very superstitious with my first I hated it when people kept turning up at my door with baby stuff when I wasn't even that far gone as I couldn't bear the idea of getting rid of it all if the worst happened.
With my second I just got whatever whenever, but mostly second hand.

PumpkinSpicedLatte · 04/01/2025 17:15

Buy it OP. Buying something will not affect the outcome of your scan. I am superstitious in some senses but when it comes to things like this, you’ll regret it if you don’t.
I was very organised and bought things early for my baby (she’s 4 now), we got the pram in sales during Covid when I was 15 weeks.

I haven't enjoyed much about my pregnancy so far and a MMC in July means I'm a bit cautious now. But thank you - maybe I should enjoy the nice bits! (Although if I have to see another pram review I'm going to go insane!)

Glad I don't sound mad for suggesting it! Lovely to hear it all worked out for you 😊

I've tried to be very un-aesthetic (our must-have list has more to do with durability than colours), but they are very nice to look at! 😂

I'm not superstitious but chose not to buy anything until after the 20 week scan just in case. In your case given it can be returned and it's a good price (is it really a good price? "Sales" seem to be year round these days) then I'd go for it.

However I'd never buy a pram without trying it and several others out in store. You really do need to get the feel of it and try fold it before you can choose one.

I'm so sorry for your loss 💔 I'm very superstitious and had a MMC in July so am extra cautious, but have reasoned that if the whole thing is unused and in a box then I can re-sell it or keep it if we try again. We've saved some money specifically for a pram etc but it still feels like a huge initial outlay.

We wanted to buy the travel system new for a few reasons, but almost everything else is a hand-me-down or second hand (barring things like mattress). I'm finding the thought of shopping for baby quite stressful as I almost never buy anything new!

Ooh - why would you avoid the car seats?

OP posts:
MrsWeasely · 04/01/2025 17:52

The pram would be fine but I would definitely avoid a cossato car seat. They are the most flimsy and unsafe I can’t car seats on the market I have been led to believe. Minimum safety crash checks and not a great fit for babies (which is important for airways and spine etc). Check out some car seat safety groups on facebook before you buy. There’s important things to consider like the best fit, safety tests etc they can advise or you can look at posts. I didn’t have a clue until I joined these groups and it’s shocking how bad some car seats are.

Thanks - we've popped into a few shops to have a go but they all just blur tbh! We're hoping to find this one in a shop and have a go before we really commit, but knowing it does everything we want makes such a difference.

The £700 saving feels massive for us, so does really feel like a good price - but we'd be kicking ourselves if we wait until Easter on the off-chance they have another sale 😬

OP posts:
BeeCucumber · 04/01/2025 17:53

I would suggest going to a pram shop and trying them out - push them around and see how heavy they are and how easy they are to collapse. Not all prams/pushchairs/travel systems are the same size.

NormaNormalPants · 04/01/2025 17:55

Another that would avoid the car seats. Admittedly it was a few years ago when we were looking for DD but I seem to recall they ranked quite low on safety tests.

Definitely try it before you buy. Our buggy lasted nearly six years across two children and on my maternity leaves in particular was worked very hard. You need to know you like it, and not just the price.
