Are one large bite of spoilt tuna mayo sandwich 32 weeks pregnant

Hi, I was a at a cafe with my toddler today and ordered a tuna mayo toastie. I ate one large bite of a corner as was really hungry and swallowed. Felt it didn’t taste right but had just had a swig of my partners coffee so tried one more smaller bite before asking my husband to try. He also said it tasted more fishy than tinned tuna should and more vinegary/almost metallic than should.
I asked the staff if they could tell me when the mix had been made up and they said two days ago. I then decided to make myself vomit and I think got most of it up. I also emailed the managers of the farm and have now got this response back which makes me believe it was first made/opened four days ago??
Hello,

Apologies you didn't have a good experience today at the cafe .
We spoke with the staff and we point out your concerns . We want to let you know that
we buy the tuna and mayo mix ready from the supplier.
It was busy last Sunday so we opened one of the mix container that day.
And we were closed Monday and wednesday so technically today is the last day to use.
If you said you found it fishier well speak with the supplier as well.
If there is any questions you have please let me know.

Is my baby going to be ok? Going to call my midwife in the morning but guessing it’s just wait and see? I had a miscarriage last year December so this is a very much wanted pregnancy and I’ve been super stressed throughout 😭😭

Yes your baby will be fine and so will you

Making yourself sick is a very extreme reaction to eating something which didn’t taste right … you mention a previous miscarriage and of course worries are usual but this sounds much more than usual anxiety

I would mention to your midwife

Laszlomydarling · 02/01/2025 21:07

Do you feel ok?

Mummyschubs · 02/01/2025 22:23

I just thought it would be sensible to hopefully reduce bacterial load if was spoilt to try and avoid food poisoning. Have been feeling fine since, although have some regurge but think that’s just down to baby taking up lots of room.

Sounds like you're fine. Try and get some rest. It's easy to blow these things out of proportion when you're pregnant.

sel2223 · 03/01/2025 09:51

If you haven't got any signs of food poisoning or illness then nothing to worry about.

Babybaby2025 · 03/01/2025 10:29

Baby will be fine. Tuna doesn't sound spoilt if it was on its last day, but maybe not 'fresh'. Making yourself sick is a bit OTT but I get anxiety can make you act that way. Even if it was spoilt, the chance of getting ill still would be low

Cindy1802 · 03/01/2025 10:30

Even if you have food poisoning, baby will be absolutely fine. I had FP while pregnant and GP reassured me baby will not feel any ill affects.

Boarb · 03/01/2025 10:32

I then decided to make myself vomit This seems unnecessary and quite dramatic.

Allmarbleslost · 03/01/2025 10:33

Making yourself sick was a massive overreaction op. Your baby is fine.

Leolife · 03/01/2025 10:56

It didn't even occur to me to avoid any foods while I was pregnant with all three of my children.

I was also sick one time to the point of vomiting blood as it irritated my throat lining and didn't panic or run to the GP as I knew why the blood had happened, despite the fact I didn't actually know why I'd started vomiting so violently - but it cleared me next day so maybe a 24 hour bug.

Anyway. All three children are now strapping teenagers.

Don't worry; you're much more resilient than you think and so is baby.

Mummyschubs · 03/01/2025 21:48

Well that’s the last time I ask for advice on here. I work veterinary and inducing emesis (making something vomit) is the best way to avoid toxicity from ingestion of foods that can cause sickness of effect organs e.g raising ingestion in dogs.
I spoke to my midwife today and she advised that by making myself sick within minutes of ingestion I have made it far less likely that I could have caught either salmonella (can cause meningitis in the unborn child), campylobacter (only causes complications with the mother), listeria (unlikely to be an issue with tuna mayo as usually only an issue with raw fish but can cause death of the fetus/still birth and be symptomless in the mother). I have also been hospitalised for two weeks as a 10 year old after catching salmonella while on holiday so am well aware of how sick it can make you. Have been advised to keep an eye on any symptoms and if I have any nausea or loose bowel movements to contact the midwife team immediately so they can send samples off for testing. However, due to likely getting most of it up stomach acids should do their job in destroying any small amount of bacteria still there. Will be relying on the midwife team in future rather than any advice from here.

tattychicken · 03/01/2025 21:58

But why on earth would you have contracted salmonella or cambylobacter or listeria from some perfectly useable tuna mayo?

It's quite the stretch which is baffling people.

Babybaby2025 · 03/01/2025 22:05

I don't think any of the comments have been cruel, just in hind sight that making yourself sick was likely unnecessary and that the tuna was more than likely fine - therefore offering reassurance that there is little to worry about.

megacat · 03/01/2025 22:06

They need reporting. Technically it was only two days because they were closed for two days is their logic, like bacteria don't multiply when the shop is closed? Are they stupid? You have written evidence and should go to the food standards agency.

Immavet · 03/01/2025 22:11

OP, funny enough, I was reading the responses, thinking "Gone off fish? Pregnant? I DON'T think vomiting was OTT"... then read that you're a vet - so am I - maybe we have seen too much, haha.

I think making yourself vomit was a reasonable call in THIS instance, and I'm not a panicker at all.
However, I'm sure you will be completely fine.

Wishing you well.

They don't seem to have said how long it should normally last for once opened - although the staff saying they thought it had been opened for two days maybe suggests it normally should be used within two days. Four days sounds like too long to me, I wouldn't eat tuna mayo that had been sat in my home fridge for four days.

Nc54684 · 03/01/2025 22:38

Sounds like severe anxiety

Dartmoorcheffy · 03/01/2025 22:44

Tuna is a high risk food and shouldn't be kept once opened for more than three days, some say 5 days but I prefer to err on the safe side with fish. . I would be more cautious especially as its a premixed tub from a food supplier and even more so if its in a cafe where the have the fillings in a refrigerated cabinet rather than a fridge.

underseige05 · 03/01/2025 22:47

You have a 3 day life on fresh food so if it was made on Monday morning it should be thrown away Wednesday evening if being sold to the public. I own a deli/cafe and this is standard practice. Day dots are used for this very instance so that all staff regardless of not being in for the full 3 days would know when to throw out.

CIaudiasFringe · 03/01/2025 22:48

Honestly...just bloody relax! You'll be absolutely fine 🙂

Helpwithdivorce · 03/01/2025 22:51

You’ve asked the same advice on here and on vetmums. Which makes me think that you do need some help with your anxiety. Why was the responses from vetmums not sufficient, when actually most agreed with you.
Why did you need further reassurance?
Of course you will be fine as will your baby. But I really do think you need to seek support from your midwife team for your anxiety

underseige05 · 03/01/2025 22:52

Am I also right in saying they opened it sunday and you ate it yesterday so Thursday? That's 5 days. That's a definite no in a cafe.

underseige05 · 03/01/2025 22:53

I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine though but they do need to go over their food hygiene/safety practices.

2toomanycats · 03/01/2025 22:54

Go easy everyone. Anxiety is hideous. Especially when worrying about yourself and your unborn child.
i’m surprised by some of the harsh responses but then i’ve had similar when asking health anxiety related questions.
i do think you have very little to worry about so try hard to relax and distract yourself. Remember that in a few days this worry will have passed.
take good care of yourself x

Bit knee jerk. The comments you have had are not nasty or derogatory like some can be. They are mainly saying that you are too anxious given the situation.
