Reduced movements

Hey!
I wondered if anyone else was in a similar situation?

Just for context, I have had a neonatal death and multiple miscarriages.

I have been in multiple times for reduced movements, had scans and everything looks fine.

Some days my baby moves loads and then the next, nearly nothing at all.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Oh OP, I can only imagine how anxious you must feel after your previous losses, I'm so sorry.

I think in your position, you can't take any chances and I think you are doing the right thing calling for advice and getting checked out whenever you are worried.

As an aside though, It sounds like all is going really well. Bear in mind, your baby is still very small at this stage so has plenty room to change positions and tuck themselves away into every little nook and cranny where you can't feel them as much or at all - most medical advice says not even to start tracking until 28 weeks because of this.
Once you get into the third trimester, space becomes tighter so they should settle into position and you should see more of a daily pattern emerging.

Not sure where your placenta is either but that can also make a difference. Movements are generally harder to feel with an anterior placenta at the front.

Sorry for your previous experiences and having reduced movements now. I’d say if you are ever having reduced movements to go in to have a check. I’ve been in twice (now 33 weeks) and both times I’m so glad I did and the midwives berated me for leaving it for a while before going in (less than a day because I was seeing if she’d move at night like usual). I definitely had days where she was quieter - usually when I was busy or distracted with work but some days definitely didn’t follow her usual pattern.
Since I’ve been in third trimester I’d say her pattern is all over the place, she tends to move after I eat and at night the most but definitely not as regularly as in my second trimester. I plan to just keep going in if I worry as it’s really not worth the risk or me worrying really - like the midwives said to me, it’s their job to check up on us ☺️
Give them a ring and go in next time baby is quiet.

I had this from the moment I started to feel movements at 24 weeks right up until I had my baby. I found it incredibly stressful and I was back and forth to triage. I'm sorry you're going through this and for your prior losses OP, you must be incredibly anxious.

With my reduced movements I was told that it was because of an anterior placenta but I was also told that unto itself shouldn't stop you going to triage because once you feel movement you should be able to feel them consistently. I think with my baby that actually she spent huge long periods asleep and thats why I had quiet days. Everything was always ok and she's now 13 months and it sounds like everything is going ok with your pregnancy so that's great. All I can say is just keep getting checked out when you notice reduced movement and that should help put your mind at ease.

I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well, it can be so full of worry sometimes!

Worrywort98 · 02/12/2024 19:18

Literally came onto mumsnet to ask this as well OP - Im 31 weeks and last night he was very quiet, and I've only had a few kicks all day 😥
I have been so busy with work and things I couldn't get out of all day. I'm definitely going to go in first thing tomorrow morning if he hasn't moved more this evening. Its so stressful isn't it 🥺
Good luck hope all is okay. ❤️❤️

pepperonipizzaaaa · 02/12/2024 19:20

i had reduced movements nearly everyday in my last pregnancy. ended up with daily ctgs until delivery at 37 weeks. was relieved to have opted for a csection as despite not seeing it on multiple growth scans there was a true knot in his cord :/ they said it could have been this that caused slower/less movements. all good now though. go in every single time

Don’t wait. Call the unit at the hospital tonight and see what the midwives say.

Sorry for your losses.

As another poster, I was in and out getting checked from the moment I first felt her move.

Please don't hesitate and say I'll see if they move soon. Ring and get checked, it is what they're there for.

WhatMe123 · 02/12/2024 21:58

WhatMe123 · 03/12/2024 06:30

@Worrywort98 good stuff, best to get it checked out and the ward would always prefer to see you than not

GridlockonMain · 03/12/2024 08:40

In my first pregnancy I had several episodes of reduced movement. Everything was fine each time but I always went in to get checked out. The midwives were really clear with me - they would rather see someone fifty times and it all be ok than miss the one occasion when something wasn’t right. Always, always contact them for reduced movement.

When pregnant with my DD I went in about 5/6 times for reduced movement. Her movements were harder to feel due to an anterior placenta but regardless the Midwives ALWAYS encourage me to come in to get checked. As PP's have said they would rather check you 50 times then miss one time where something is wrong.

Please please don't hesitate to call x

sel2223 · 03/12/2024 13:05

This is true regarding an anterior placenta. I had one in my first pregnancy, and I never had strong movements and could often go long periods without feeling anything at all. I was in and out regularly then by the end i was invited in for daily monitoring. The attitude was always that while it was most likely to just be down to that, it is also ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry.

I'm 23+3 now with a posterior placenta and the difference is unbelievable. What I feel now is stronger and more regular than I ever felt in my first pregnancy.

Hhdxx · 06/12/2024 15:32

Hey, I'm sorry for the long delay. I have been on Saturday, Monday and today he's been quiet again. I have definitely felt movement at least once every two hours.
I can't remember what is normal due to what happened with my daughter. I'm 28 weeks tomorrow.
Thank you everyone for your replies.

Did you find out where your placenta is OP, front or back?

Every 2 hours is great, I never felt that in my last pregnancy

Hhdxx · 06/12/2024 16:08

My placenta is at the front.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday I've had such frequent movements but now it feels quite muddled so I'm presuming baby is behind the placenta. I have felt movement though. It just doesn't seem as strong.

How strict do I need to be about routine? Usually he moves after breakfast about 10am but today he moved a lot at 11.30?

Ah bless you, it can be much harder to feel movements with an anterior placenta at the front.

I had an anterior (front) with my first and now posterior (back) with my second and the difference is huge.

From my experience last time, I never had much of a pattern unfortunately and never felt very strong movements. I never saw my belly move, no foot sticking out etc and the kicks were not strong enough for anybody else to ever feel them. Literally everything was cushioned behind the placenta except the very lowest of kicks when baby was in a low down position. If I felt something twice a day (morning and evening) then I learned to be happy with that. If I got to the evening and realised i hadn't felt anything all day then I'd have a cold sugary drink and lie in my left side for 20 mins or so.....if still nothing, that's when I'd go in (she was a very active baby, i just couldn't feel it).

Instead of comparing with what you've had before or what others experience, I think the best thing is to try and learn about this baby and see what is normal for them. It may be that the pattern is certain times each day or it may be it's more related to activities like walking, eating, drinking, resting etc so can vary depending on your activity level each day. Hopefully you'll start to see some sort of pattern emerge over the next month.

I don't think you need to be so strict now with it being at an exact time ie 10.30 each morning but that's just my opinion. You have to trust your own instincts.

Mill3nnial · 06/12/2024 16:37

Yes my baby moved lots some days and then hardly at all others so I didn't get too worried the day before she was due and barely moved. She had died. I was unlucky (and I'm sorry for your loss also 💐) but don't fall into a false sense of security and always go in if you're questioning movements

I wouldn't worry about routine as much personally if he was moving but more the amount of movement

@Mill3nnial I am so sorry for your loss. That must have been utterly devastating.
Thank you for sharing to help spread awareness that sometimes things might not be okay with reduced movements.

You don't have to answer this, but if you don't mind me asking, what had happened to your baby? 💔
