Should I call 111? First trimester

I have just made my 2 year old his breakfast and I felt like I was going to pass out. I feel so lightheaded and faint to the point I actually feel like I could black out. I am so short of breath, keep getting really hot and blurred vision. I am so worried I will pass out and my little one will be on his own. I am still not registered with my GP so should I call 111? Or is what I am experiencing totally normal and I won't physically pass out? I hate wasting time so I don't want to call them if it's nothing. I am about 6/7 weeks pregnant.

Have you had something to eat and drink? Is there anybody (partner, family, friend) who could come and be with you whilst you're feeling like this?

Lightheadedness can be common in pregnancy but if you've had a little sit down and some food and water and it's still persisting then it's probably wise to seek medical advice.

LolaJ87 · 27/11/2024 10:00

@sugarplum33 has it right - call in some support and then get some proper medical advice.

Onlyvisiting · 27/11/2024 10:04

Call someone, if you dont have nearby family or friends or neighbours then call 111. If you feel any worse call 999.
Lightheaded might be fairly normal, breathless doesn't sound right to me.
You have a child, you must know what pregnancy symptoms were normal for yoy last time?

Motherof1and2dogs · 27/11/2024 10:04

@sugarplum33 I'm sat down and have had a slice of jam and toast and I still feel really queasy. I'm sat in front of a window to get fresh air, it seems to be every time I move. I also keep getting continuous hot flushes. I am just so scared I will pass out and my little boy will be alone.

Are you registered with a midwife? Can you call maternity triage?

Today’s job needs to be registering with a GP.

Motherof1and2dogs · 27/11/2024 10:08

@Onlyvisiting I never felt like this with my first. This pregnancy has been hell. Bad sickness 24/7, gone off food, feeling dizzy, out of breath. I have just moved to a new area so I don't really know my neighbours and my friends and family are all about an hour away

LolaJ87 · 27/11/2024 10:11

@Motherof1and2dogs call in your family from an hour away as if you pass out in the meantime at least someone will arrive to call for help and to support your son!

Dodie66 · 27/11/2024 10:12

I would call 111 for advice

BabyFever246 · 27/11/2024 10:12

Call 111 and make a GP registration an absolute priority

sugarplum33 · 27/11/2024 10:13

@Onlyvisiting Pregnancy symptoms can be very different between pregnancies, I was signed off with awful sickness with my daughter but had just had relatively mild sickness with my son.

@Motherof1and2dogs Do you have a partner? Realistically if you're worried you're going to pass out and you're looking after a toddler you need to get somebody to come to you and help, In the meantime get yourself to floor level so you don't fall and injure yourself.

Motherof1and2dogs · 27/11/2024 10:41

@sugarplum33 yes I have my husband, however due to the nature of his job he can't always answer calls. I still haven't been able to get hold of him. I will be asking if he can book some time off to help me during the first trimester but then I feel so silly asking that. There must be so many women that have to just get on with life that can't get any help at all while feeling this way :(

OK, I am not a medical person. But when you mentioned breathlessness I wondered about PE, which I believe is an increased risk in pregnancy.
I don't want to panic you and its probably not, but personally I would be st least calling 111 for advice and make sure you mention all your symptoms.
Hope you feel better soon x

JustAFear · 27/11/2024 11:07

Stop worrying about what other women do. Focus on yourself, your toddler and your baby.

I agree to sit on the floor, or at least a sofa, if you feel like you might pass out.

Call a friend or family member, if they’re an hour away that just means you need to call now so they can get moving.

If it doesn’t pass with a bit of food and drink, yes call 111.

Then register with a GP this afternoon and tell them you’re pregnant and need registering with the midwives too.

sel2223 · 27/11/2024 12:18

I've been having this a lot in my second pregnancy, never had it with my first either.
The most common reasons in early pregnancy are low iron or low blood pressure. Mine is BP related and has caused me to pass out and fall over a couple of times (I'm almost 23 weeks now).
There's not a lot they can do for me so the advice I have been given is to rest (yeah right, I wish!), lie down or sit if i get dizzy, try and move slowly when first getting up, eat something sugary, drink caffeine or sugary drink, don't venture far on my own.

Hope you feel better soon. Do6 you have an appointment soon to check your BP and iron levels?

Motherof1and2dogs · 27/11/2024 12:33

@sel2223 that is so scary :( why do our bodies have to make us feel this way!
So is it totally normal to actually pass out when pregnant if you have low BP or low iron? Does this affect baby?

I still need to register with my GP, but I am completing the forms tonight and dropping them off tomorrow (once the sickness subsides a little), luckily my mum is stepping in tomorrow to help with little one. I will then be getting my bloods checked and BP checked asap!!

I had this a lot with my first pregnancy, I lovely GP said it was related to dehydration making my low blood pressure even lower. I a hydration IV and anti sickness injection made a massive difference! Do contact 111 amd register with a GP, they might be able to help you feel a lot better.

sel2223 · 27/11/2024 12:36

I wouldn't say 'totally normal' but also not unheard of either.

Baby won't be harmed from feeling dizzy or faint etc but obviously it's always a concern passing out or falling incase you fall onto the bump.

WhatMe123 · 27/11/2024 12:38

I was very similar with dd1 up until about 10 weeks. I just had to eat and drink regular, stand up slowly and sleep plenty. Try to sit down as much as you can and move slower, no sudden movements. It'll be your body adjusting to the increase in blood flow etc

ByHardyRubyEagle · 27/11/2024 12:42

Definitely get registered with GP and self refer to midwife if you haven’t already done so. I would call 111 if you’re worried and they can make a relevant referral, maybe with the GP you are yet to register at.

romdowa · 27/11/2024 12:46

If it happens again try sitting down and drinking water and eating something salty. It sounds like your blood pressure took a dive . Best to mention it to a Dr/ midwife though too

Nc546888 · 27/11/2024 13:00

I had this with second pregnancy. Needed to drink more water and eat more regularly

Has it eased off now or are you still feeling lightheaded?

Motherof1and2dogs · 27/11/2024 14:09

@Onlyvisiting it did ease off but I have since been laying in bed while my little one naps and I keep getting really hot flushes and feeling lightheaded. Seeing what others have mentioned I am wondering if I am dehydrated which is affecting my BP. I haven't been drinking as much water as I should, but this is due to the nausea putting me off water

Little sips OP - I keep a sports bottle of water near me and just constantly take little sips through the day.
I can't do a full drink at once or I get really nauseous

sugarplum33 · 27/11/2024 14:42

Obviously water is best but any liquid is good when you're struggling to drink much and it might be worth trying some flavoured drinks. Fanta fruit twist hit the spot when I was pregnant with DD.

As other have said don't compare yourself to anyone else. Pregnancy can be a breeze for some or it can be TOUGH for others. Get through it best you can calling on as much help as possible.
