Hi,

Having a mini meltdown and last minute panic lol. I was at maternity assessment unit tonight for reduced movements. They offered induction for tomorrow and in a panic I accepted. Was also given a sweep I'm 2cm. I wasn't really given time to process induction offer but I'm 39+4 anyway so I think I'll be ok.

I never got induced with my son so I'm just looking for some advice and positive induction stories while I repack bags and freak out🤣

It wasn't my experience but best of luck and at least you know things will happen tomorrow. Come back and tell us about baby when you're home.

If you were already 2cm induction will ramp up fast. If you're not happy at any point please do let the midwives know. You're not overdue so don’t feel that you have to accept induction, they haven't given a reason to go for it. At 2cm you're already going on your own. I don't mean to give negative opinions to scare you so I won't share mine. You'll be naturally progressing. Induction seems a harsh suggestion especially with a second birth.
Best of luck, whatever you decide.

ToriMJ · 02/11/2024 01:07

Deep breaths.
Remember you can choose to do it or not do it, it's up to you.
If you decide to go for it, just plan for it to take potentially a day or two to get going, there might be quite a lot of waiting and boring bits. Try to keep up and about, focus on breathing and staying in a good head space.
Have a beautiful birth day x

SlipperyLizard · 02/11/2024 01:07

I was induced at 38 weeks due to high blood pressure, they just told me it would be the next day! All was fine, pessary then 6 hours later they broke my waters & 6 hours after that DD1 was born. Good luck!

Thank you! I was surprised at the offer for induction but ultimately I do think it was the right choice as I've really been struggling with pgp and can actually hardly move🫣 hoping things go quick enough for me😢

Thank you! This is a fab induction story as i have heard quite a few horror stories 🫣 I think the worst part will be waiting about for them to call me tomorrow with a time 🤣

Good luck. How exciting to meet your baby tomorrow!
Both mine were induced at 38 weeks and were fine.

ToriMJ · 02/11/2024 01:37

Ps get to bed, even if you can't really sleep it will give your sweep the best chance of working if you're all snuggled in bed and relaxed.

Decline, delay etc.
Babies come when they are ready.
Inductions almost always lead to cascade of interventions. (Forceps, FGM, c-section etc).

mathanxiety · 02/11/2024 03:44

That's a significant exaggeration wrt intervention.

Mine didn't. No interventions and only a tiny tear here. Plus, if she's already 2cm dilated then baby's presumably ready by your logic

Butterflyfern · 02/11/2024 04:14

I was induced by pessary and then drip as my waters broke (slightly early), with minimal signs of labour following. First birth.

Pessary got me to 2cm, then the drip did the rest. Pessary was fine, insertion felt a little odd. Drip ramped things up in an intense way, so I got an (walking) epidural when I was 4cm. Epidural was fantastic, kept feeling in my legs and feet throughout and no unwelcome side effects.

I was able to push effectively, baby wasn't in distress at any point and born without interventions. I ended up with a (just about) second degree tear that hasn't bothered me since.

Absolutely not what I had planned theoretically, but I still feel it was a great birth experience and wouldn't change it. It was the best thing for me (and baby). Good luck!

Redhothoochycoocher · 02/11/2024 04:18

I had a lovely induction experience, very positive. Mine was long but I wasn't 2cm already. Had two pessaries spaced over 12 hrs and then a long break, followed by 2 sweeps. They wanted to put me on the drip so I asked for the 2nd sweep and time to think about the drip but then the contractions started.

I was 3cm at 3:30am and DD was born at 4:11am so when it happened she came incredibly fast! She's 4, almost 5 and has just climbed into bed with me and DH, as is her nightly ritual around this time!

Make sure you ask for pain relief before you think you need it and I was advised to have an epidural before having the drip as the contractions are artificial and big. I didn't get to that point so that's not personal experience. Top tip is that you shouldn't feel pressured to escalate any of the interventions. Ask for time to think about things and talk to the consultant and midwives around. You don't HAVE to have higher levels of intervention, you can repeat the lower levels a couple of times (eg pessaries and sweeps).

Best of luck OP!

PaleBrunette · 02/11/2024 05:24

Pushing takes a lot of energy so my tip is early epidural so you can rest until it’s time to push. I did this, had heaps of energy and didn’t need forceps or anything else.

cantthinkofaname1991 · 02/11/2024 05:30

I was terrified of induction but was recommend due to growth restriction. I was 0cm before they gave me the pessary and they told me it would take days. Baby was born within a few hours of pessary, it was fast but a much more positive experience than I was expecting and just gas and air (due to everything happening quickly, but it was manageable). Good luck :)

This baby is ready though.

I had 2 inductions - at 42 weeks and 40 weeks. First labour lasted less than 3 hours, second was 1.5 hours. Both times I had one dose of the gel, and had a lovely water birth with just gas and air.

Ive had the best births of anyone I’ve known.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/11/2024 05:50

I was induced with dc1

i didn’t need to go in until 8pm and started at 10pm. He arrived just before 5am the next morning. It all happened very quickly tbh!

Good luck!

thursday22august · 02/11/2024 06:10

Only have the induction if you want it - you can say you've changed your mind. I was induced at 40 + 1 and it was great - pessary in and baby delivered about 11 hours later. Hope it all goes well

MosaDiCello · 02/11/2024 06:12

I was 40+5 days pregnant and was given a date for induction. I went to the hospital and decided it wasn't for me. I felt like I was being pushed to have it just because I was overdue apart from being overdue there was no issues with my pregnancy. My friend gave birth to her DD three weeks ago at 37+1 due to reduced movement, she had an ultrasound and it showed her placenta had reduced in function. Her experience was not a good one and it's been hard for her to unpack that.

Have they given you an ultrasound to see what is causing the reduced movements?
Have you spoken to a doctor? Have they said why they want to induce you?

I agree with PP if you are already 2cm I'd wait to see if your body will go into labour naturally it's better to let nature take its course.

Wishing you all the best in your labour please update us!

SlipperyLizard · 02/11/2024 08:27

With DD2, I was in hospital waiting to be induced next day (high BP again, but almost at term this time), when I started getting pain. By the time the midwife brought the paracetamol the pain was getting bad. She checked me and I was 3cm, she made me feel like a wimp for being in so much pain, suggested I was a long way off delivering (why do some midwives, of all people, dismiss women’s pain?).

DD2 was born 2 hours after I first asked for the paracetamol!

Every labour is different, and you tend to only hear the bad induction stories (like you only hear the bad epidural stories). Neither of my labours were what I wanted (home birth in a pool!), but there’s every chance your induction will be a straightforward process.

happymum1001 · 02/11/2024 13:54

Well ladies got a call at 8:30am this morning to be in the induction bay for 10am. I had the balloon inserted at 11:30, went for a walk had some lunch but not much is happening 😵‍💫 she also said I'm just about 2cm but cervix is a little bit further back than they would like and still quite thick🫣 hope it doesn't take much longer to get going

OP posts:
Clockworksatsuma · 02/11/2024 22:19

Why did you get the balloon if you’re already 2cm? At that dilation I was told they could break my waters so I wouldn’t need it. As it happens, they broken on their own after the sweep whilst waiting for a bed on delivery suite.

Induction was at 39+3 so very similar to you although for a small baby.
