Any change in patterns at this stage of pregnancy for your baby means you must call the midwives at your hospital.

Give them a call this morning, they’ll likely ask you to come in for monitoring. In my experience they’d rather you come in for a check and all be fine, than to leave it too long in the event that something is not.

When I was pregnant I was woken every night by prolonged hiccuping by my son. It was so annoying. He’s a happy healthy 12 year old now, but I still tease him if he ever gets hiccups.

But just speak to your midwife to see if she wants to investigate any further

SoporificLettuce · 01/11/2024 08:23

All of mine had hiccoughs in the womb but my first had them lots and lots. They all were fine. I would still speak to your midwife anyway, just for your own peace of mind even.

Thankyou for commenting and I mentioned this to midwife few weeks back she said it's normal but I'm just thinking should it be so close together babys had hiccups but spaced hours apart this time this morning babys had hiccups like 3 times in space of 4 hours.

My eldest hiccuped loads! He's now 17 🙂

Mynewnameis · 01/11/2024 08:50

I remember this. Initially found it lovely, soon turned into annoying

Thanks and I know they say hiccups is totally fine just the fact of baby hiccuping 3 times in space of 4 hours never had this before normally it's like 3 or 4 in the whole day

Haha I get you as I'm the same it's cute and lovely as they do say it's a good sign of the diagphram and lungs etc but so close together I've never had that

Two out of three of mine used to do it all the time and it would drive me crazy but I'd absolutely get any change in pattern checked and give your midwife a call.

Topseyt123 · 01/11/2024 09:01

My eldest hiccuped loads and loads while in the womb. I found it reassuring that she was there and OK. I would have called this normal.

My DD is a healthy 29 year old now. Rarely has hiccups and no issues at all.

If you're worried speak to the midwife.

ecossegirl91 · 01/11/2024 09:09

My boy hiccuped so much in the womb! He actually still gets hiccups a lot now at 2 and he had reflux as a baby which the midwife said was related to the womb hicupping as he done it so often (?). Agree to speak to a midwife just to ease your mind.

Aparecium · 01/11/2024 09:11

Definitely get this checked. Not likely to be anything to worry about, but...

Warning: potentially scary anecdote.

One of my babies had multiple bouts of hiccups every day towards the end of the pregnancy. He had never had them before, but it didn't occur to me to worry. He was born with the cord so tightly wound around his neck that it had to be cut before the rest of his body could come out. He was 100% fine at birth and after.

Only one of my other babies had hiccups in utero, just a couple of bouts, and none of them had any cord problems.

Connected? Apparently there's no medical evidence, but I would want to have my baby checked for any of the confirmed signs of distress.

Because it’s a change in pattern that’s a worry, not the hiccups themselves. Without wanting to worry you there’s a very small chance the cord is under pressure if the baby suddenly starts hiccuping more than normal in the 3rd trimester. Please do call your midwife and stress his pattern has changed.

My daughter hiccuped a LOT but it was consistent with a pattern, and so that was nothing to worry about.

Yes, it’s the change in a pattern that needs flagged, not the hiccoughs themselves.
best wishes, OP xx

Both of mine always used to have hiccups in the womb a lot, and as babies. My almost 3 year old has mostly grown out of it but I've got a 3 month old who is still hiccuping for England. They both had tongue ties if there's any connection!

Mine were the same! I remember googling this when I was pregnant.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2024 19:13

If this is new, I'd talk to the midwife about it.

One of my DCs had hiccups on and off for months. Was very prone to hiccups for years afterwards too.

Angrymum22 · 01/11/2024 19:20

I spent the last 4 weeks of pregnancy in hospital ( high blood pressure) and was monitored every day sometimes twice a day. The only comment from the midwife about his frequent bouts of hiccups was that it ruined the monitoring record so they had to repeat it.
They were never concerned, in fact it was a positive sign that he was ok.
It was always in the morning.
The other thing I noticed was that when DH visited, after work, DS would leap into action at the sound of his voice. I don’t suppose I would have noticed at home but it was definitely his voice that set him off twirling around.

vipersnest1 · 01/11/2024 19:31

DC2 had bouts of hiccups in utero. They could last up to two hours.
I agree with a PP - they rapidly go from cute to really irritating very quickly, especially if you're trying to sleep.
DC2 still gets hiccups a lot as an adult.

Bluesea14 · 01/11/2024 20:01

Mine hiccups all the time! At first it was cute but I can't stand it now. I logged it once as I was a bit worried -

Mine did it constantly.. still does now at nearly 7 tbh 😅

shivbo2014 · 01/11/2024 20:27

My 2nd hiccuped like mad, I was really worried and asked the midwife she was completely unconcerned.

Wasywasydoodah · 01/11/2024 20:33

My first was very hiccuppy. She still is at 13. If she laughs then she always gets hiccups. I have no idea why!

Sorry wrong thread!

I did have a hiccuping baby though, they got concerned as he wouldn't stop doing it during labour. If you are worried please contact the midwife
