How much weight did you gain?

I am 22 weeks and have put on a stone! My legs look chunky as hell. Given how much the baby weighs now which isn't anywhere near that I am panicking I am gaining too quickly.

Four stone. Maintained normal diet throughout, was absolutely blindsided and heartbroken at how much I gained. Seven years later still can’t lose it.

Incakewetrust · 31/10/2024 12:00

With my first, I put on 3 stone overall and lost it all within 11 days of giving birth.

With my second, I put 3 stone on again and she's now 5 and I weigh the same 🙃

user2848502016 · 31/10/2024 12:19

Over 2 stone with my eldest, I was a healthy BMI when I got pregnant. Only a stone with my second but was already a little bit overweight getting pregnant.
Midwife wasn't concerned either time.
Both babies over 8lb so quite a lot of weight just from that!

Scottishskifun · 31/10/2024 12:20

DS1 3stone - he weighed 9lb and I had a very large placenta. I weighed myself when I got home and had lost 2.6 stone from giving birth a few days before so most of the weight was him/placenta and fluid.

DS2 - 2.3 stone he weighed 7lb smaller placenta again weighed when I got home the next day and had lost 1.5 stone so again a lot was baby!

Ironically I looked huge with DS2 but not DS1. I wouldn't take the scales as what wright you have put on as you don't know what is baby with placenta and fluids and what is weight gain.

bakewellbride · 31/10/2024 12:22

I put on a stone at 10 weeks each time - honestly op you have nothing to worry about!

1st baby 3 stone in total.

2nd baby 4 stone total.

I'm now a skinny size 8 again! I weigh just over 8 stone, bmi 18.7.

Weight gain is healthy and natural, embrace it and there is nothing to fear. It's a good thing.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 31/10/2024 12:24

I went from 8stone 12 to 12 stone on the day I had my c section at 39 weeks! I’m 5ft 9 and at my heaviest pre pregnancy I’d been 9.5 stone, so I felt huge with a 3 stone gain! I’ve no idea how I gained so much either, I had HG and could barely stomach food, I couldn’t have tried to gain less weight! Anyway I’d lost all the weight by 8months post partum, but have a word with your midwife if you think you’re gaining too much. Mine said 3 stone was a lot but I was thin to start with so it wasn’t something they were worried about.

RockahulaRocks · 31/10/2024 12:29

8KG, so just under 1.5 stone. I lost most of it before DD was 6 months old then promptly put it all back on again because I was lulled into a false sense of security.

bows101 · 31/10/2024 13:01

I gained about 20kg. I had complications though. I remember being weighed before my c-section and seeing 90kg and wanted to cry. Also my baby came out weighing 1.2kg 😬 so all the weight was me!

coxesorangepippin · 31/10/2024 13:13

3 stone with each pregnancy

I was massive

coxesorangepippin · 31/10/2024 13:14

I cracked the 200lbs mark with each baby

🎉

Earsburning1 · 31/10/2024 13:19

4 stone. I was only 8 stone when I got pregnant. I am a very small eater but when I got pregnancy I ate anything and everything. Got it all back off in 6 months.

Mumofnetters · 31/10/2024 13:24

SquashPenguin · 31/10/2024 09:51

I gained 4 stone. I was carrying so much fluid I could hardly walk. My ankles disappeared.

Same! I had HELLP syndrome. I gained 3 stone and I am back to pre baby weight 1 month pp.

Feellikeafailurenow · 31/10/2024 13:31

Lost weight most of the way through first time round so was 4lbs lighter after i’d given birth than i was at my booking in. 2nd time i had twins & gained 4 & half stone! Lost a lot of it quickly but never that last half a stone!

KohlaParasaurus · 31/10/2024 13:35

I put on four stone with each of my pregnancies apart from the last one. I put on nearly five stone with that one. All singleton pregnancies, biggest baby 3.42kg, and I was perfectly healthy throughout apart from vicious reflux which I self-medicated with Haagen-Dazs. It all came off in the few months after I stopped breastfeeding.

StressedQueen · 31/10/2024 13:37

With my twins - started off at about 48kg and gained about 20kg. Then back to normal weight within about 12 weeks. For DC3, I gained about 8kg and then went back to about 50kg. DC4, the exact same but I still stayed at 50kg. DC5, I gained about 12kg and it stayed like that for about 4 months before I got to 52kg. I'm 5'3 so I needed that to look healthy but it wasn't as bad as I'd tried to keep consistent with some exercising. Never lost those 2 kilos!

Kitfish · 31/10/2024 13:39

When I was pregnant I put on 5.5 stone during the pregnancy and was 3 stone heavier than before I got pregnant one month after giving birth. Very depressing.

tediber · 31/10/2024 13:39

That is quite a lot but some people put on 3-4 stone and lose it all so quickly. My sister put on loads with her first but lost it all and more very quickly after. You might not put that much on later though try not to worry.

I was on low side of normal bmi. I think by the end of my pregnancies I had put on about 2 stone. A bit more with my first as I went to 41 wks and she was 8lb at birth. At 20wks I had only put on 3lbs though, it was really from 30wks that I gained most of it in both pregnancies.

Once baby was born I was about 9lbs heavier. Went to gym for a couple months and ended up losing about a stone. With second born it was covid and I never quite got back to pre pregnancy weight. I'm a few pounds heavier now.

Kosenrufugirl · 31/10/2024 13:42

Vhp83 · 31/10/2024 11:22

I was a normal range 24, would have like to have been lighter though.

Hi there it's a labour ward midwife. There is plenty of research that overweight women are much more likely to end up with all sorts of complications in pregnancy and labour. I have certainly seen it in my working life too. Please do be sensible with your diet and exercise from now on. Women only need the equivalent of 2 extra slices of toast and only in the 3rd trimester. Women were advised to eat for 2 in the past. That was the time when most women were undernourished which is no longer the case

urghhh47 · 31/10/2024 13:43

Around 35lbs 15kg in every (9) pregnancies except one (had oligohydramnios so put on a much smaller amount). Lost it every time and now weighs but less than when I had my 1st 23.5yrs ago.

cinammonfishsticks · 31/10/2024 14:05

32 weeks now and have gained 7lbs and am all bump - tbh going cold turkey on wine made me lose some weight initially and I'm lucky in that haven't had any morning sickness or cravings

24CRZZNKKA · 31/10/2024 14:21

@superscientist

Oh I'm sorry to hear that, sounds like it was a really tough time

Zeeha · 31/10/2024 14:25

Wow I knew I put on a lot of weight with my daughter but now I am realising I basically turned into a hippo compared to everyone else!! I went from 70kg to 110kg 😳 I've managed to get back down to 80kg in a year by eating in moderation, but I'm 13 weeks pregnant now and I already dare not go on the scale! Food is my enemy 🤣

TorroFerney · 31/10/2024 14:30

Weenurse · 31/10/2024 09:49

12 kgs and my obstetrician was very insistent on not gaining too much more as she said it was hard to lose ( and it was).
Apparently all you need is an extra glass of milk and slice of bread a day to provide the nutrients a baby needs, as long as you eat a well balanced diet.
Good luck with everything

Agree and then all that bollocks about oh you just need to breast feed the weight will drop off. Mine didn’t it took hard graft!

I put on whatever the baby book told me, it broke it all down ie what was the baby what was your extra blood volume etc. I am a) a stickler for rules and b) a bit bonkers about my weight.

Twentybottlesofbeer · 31/10/2024 14:57

Mine was a long time ago. I did 3.5 stone for baby one and 3 stone for baby two.

Lost all the weight in 7 months each time due to strict exercise and weight watchers.

TheDogsPaws · 31/10/2024 16:48

Isn't a stone by 22 weeks fairly normal?

I was a healthy weight to start with and gained just under 2 stone in each pregnancy, which I think is average. I'm sure I gained about stone by 26 weeks and then just under another stone by full term.
