Good things to throw up: by anyone's standards a TMI thread

Hi

Last pregnancy I had hyperemesis for most of the 40 weeks, and this time it started at 6 weeks. I'm taking avomine, and so far since I've been on it, I only actually throw up a few times in the morning (nasty acidy, though) and mostly just once or twice in the evening, and I'm keeping some food down - salty crispy things etc. There's even usually a time of the day when I can get a good proper drink in.

Last time, I remember talking to people on morningsicknesshelp.com about things that are slightly less really-horrible to throw up. For instance, I found out the worst thing is cheese, because it doesn't digest at all and is literally painful, and cheesy and stays in your nose and oesophagus. But someone said instant Chinese/Japanese noodles are good, and I just found out tonight that they're dead right! They are sort of okay to throw up, they taste more or less the same. I'm now looking at food as okay to throw up or horrible to throw up, so wondered if anyone had any helpful tips to steer me towards food that's not really punishing the second time you see it. Serious question, sorry it's so horrible.

Grapefruit juice. Found that my tum was soooo acidy that everything I threw up just tasted really nasty and sour, but grapefruit juice masked it because its quite acidic itself!

Agree that eggs, muesli and spaghetti are all just awful and should be avoided at all costs. As should anything with rice, you will not believe how much vomit a fairly small portion of rice will create. Eeeeeeew!

Scoobi6 · 25/04/2008 08:22

polo mints used to keep the sickness at bay a little bit for me, long enough for the bus trip home (ugh...bad memories!) and if they do come back up they still taste nice and have a cooling effect.

stuffitllama · 25/04/2008 08:27

Yes do avoid weetabix it's vile vile vile to throw up. I think bulkier foods are better as it's like a big heave and they're gone.. the ones that come up like liquid don't seem to give that non nauseous feeling of relief afterwards. (during which you might quickly be able to eat something and keep it down).

It's a good thread.

Having a bug recently I found that seeds were a bad idea! they were stuck in my nose and the back of my throat for ages afterwards- I've not been put off them though amazingly! All this talk of choking is freaking me out a bit!

Swaliswan · 25/04/2008 09:42

I had hyperemesis too and found that ginger biscuits did nothing to help the nausea but still tasted like ginger biscuits on the way back up. They certainly seemed to cancel out the horrible acid taste and burn. I can;t really remember anything else. I did like sucking on boiled sweets for the taste in my mouth. My anti-sickness tablets tasted foul on the way back up. I seem to remember sipping pressed apple juice which did help a little. I was also desperate and tried a pickled onion once which helped a lot so I continued to slowly eat a few of them. I don't remember what they tasted like if they came back up though. I think that I've tried to blank out my hyperemesis in the hope that we have another DC. Can remember the birth perfectly though - it was fab

Hi!

Bad things to puke: apples (get stuck in nose), pineapple, any citrus fruit, pringles (bitter on the way up), mini-cheddars (also bitter), gaviscon, lasagne, anything spicy, fillet-o-fish (ended up all over the bathroom!), chips

Good things to puke: bananas, milk, banana milkshake, yoghurt, pizza (!), simple pasta dishes, chocolate (!).

I'm sure I'll remember a few more things if I think about it but started to feel nauseous...

JuliaO · 25/04/2008 14:38

also try to avoid anything that will look bad on your carpet if you don't make it to the loo. Ribena V bad. I swore by eating plain covered crystalised ginger from holland and barrett in my 2nd pg (couldn't stand chocolate in my 1st), and now it just brings back to many bad memories and can't touch the stuff

BettySpaghetti · 29/04/2008 12:02

I told DP about this thread last week so at approx 3am this morning he woke me up to tell me to add curry to it. Apparently it really burns your nasal passages on the way back up (TMI I know)

We've all been struck down with a sickness bug over the weekend, he thought he'd escaped until last night. I could have done without being told about the curry at 3am though.

Twinkie1 · 29/04/2008 12:05

Ice cream - tastes the same just warm!

FlowerBee · 28/12/2009 18:33

The most horrendous thing by far is popcorn - lumpy and sticky and so so bitter. Second in line i would put partly digested Rice Crispies and Milk (the milk curdles and the crispies form lumps).

The best things were apple juice (tho now i can't drink it), ice cream, and bananas.

Had hyperemesis from week 5 to 10/11! Currently 13 weeks and still nauseous and vomity (not nearly as much) and am living on Ribena and crumpets (not too bad to throw up).

Karrierbag · 28/12/2009 19:34

29 weeks now, suffered with severe sickness and hyperemesis throughout I found;

Bad: Mashed potato, tomato soup, chocolate, milky bar youghurt, baked beans, spaghetti, rice krispies

Good: Pringles, peas, clementines, cornflakes, chips

AmazingBouncingFerret · 28/12/2009 19:43

Oh I agree about the rice krispies, absolutely awful, only way i'll eat them now is if we have made chocolate rice krispie cakes!
Best thing IMO to throw up was cream crackers, they came up in big huge clumps so it was literally a couple of heaves and they were out, left no mess either!

lostinwales · 28/12/2009 19:46

Ribena by the bed to drink first thing, you know it's going to happen so why not make it sweet and liquid rather than bile-ey nastyness.

Don't wake up starving on the day of your induction (42 weeks) and amazingly forget you have thrown up every morning for the last 9 months, and gobble down the nearest thing due to hospital feeding schedule starvation. You will be sick out of the window into the outdoor cafe seating area .

tinywelsh · 25/02/2010 09:01

Can I just add Choc Chip Cookie Poppets to the list, I'm 7 weeks into first pg and ms had really kicked in, I found that mint poppets were great for surviving the bus journey in (bus drivers don't like being told to stop but threatening to be sick on them soon does it) but managed to grab the wrong box in a rush.

Big, Big, Big mistake!

Comewhinewithme · 25/02/2010 09:04

Raspberries were good for me.

Morloth · 25/02/2010 09:56

Plain porridge (no cream or milk) with cinnamon.

tjacksonpfc · 25/02/2010 10:55

i found out not through pregnancy but medication i am on.

Do not have slow cooked beef in red wine with mushrooms onions and mash potatoes. it might be melt in the mouth on the way down but on the way back it is so dry it almost chockes you.

SallyCharlesworth · 25/02/2010 11:07

I had hyperemisis pretty much from conception, I'm nearly 18 weeks now and it's wearing off slightly but it's not to be trusted..
I have discovered through trial and unpleasant error that...
Bad-
Apple
Cherries (oh the burning)
Yogurt with fruit in
Cereal
Crumpets
Pizza
Coca cola
Cheese
Crisps
Biscuits (including those god forsaken ginger ones people say make everything better, they don't)
Kiwi fruit
Rice (gets stuck in your nose, gums, teeth, bleurgh)

Good-
Smooth yogurt (exactly the same coming up as going down, especially if it's pretty instant after eating like mine is, sometimes it still comes up cold..)
Well chewed banana
Ice cream

Drink lots of water with everything, it makes it a million times more bearable if it's all fairly well lubricated plus water before you get out of bed will give you something to throw up, getting you out of that awful bile vomit situation.

Beabops · 26/04/2010 14:19

Am 10 weeks and on medication for hyperemesis.

The worse thing by far I've thrown up was melon - hideous! Curdled milk is pretty disgusting too - lumpy.

Porridge doesn't seem too offensive though...

Have you tried Lillipops Iced Soothies? Have been a godsend for getting fluids in for me.

tabbycat7 · 26/04/2010 14:40

Porridge is ok. Shredded wheat is ok too, but impossible to get off the carpet. I found lettuce and toast especially bad

Mazzie2 · 24/06/2010 19:05

Lillipops iced Soothies worked for me too. Like you Beabops they got the fluids into me but they seemed to help the icky sick feeling. And, they're not too sweet. Ice lollies were too sugary. I still keep Lillipops in the freezer as a treat and use them for my toddler.

Batteryhuman · 24/06/2010 19:10

Sailors always recommend tinned pineapple for seasickness, cos it tastes the same both ways.
