Good things to throw up: by anyone's standards a TMI thread

Hi

Last pregnancy I had hyperemesis for most of the 40 weeks, and this time it started at 6 weeks. I'm taking avomine, and so far since I've been on it, I only actually throw up a few times in the morning (nasty acidy, though) and mostly just once or twice in the evening, and I'm keeping some food down - salty crispy things etc. There's even usually a time of the day when I can get a good proper drink in.

Last time, I remember talking to people on morningsicknesshelp.com about things that are slightly less really-horrible to throw up. For instance, I found out the worst thing is cheese, because it doesn't digest at all and is literally painful, and cheesy and stays in your nose and oesophagus. But someone said instant Chinese/Japanese noodles are good, and I just found out tonight that they're dead right! They are sort of okay to throw up, they taste more or less the same. I'm now looking at food as okay to throw up or horrible to throw up, so wondered if anyone had any helpful tips to steer me towards food that's not really punishing the second time you see it. Serious question, sorry it's so horrible.

When you know you are going to throw up and the only thing in your stomach is acid, drink some cold water. This makes vomiting less painful and the acid will burn less.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 23/04/2008 10:45

Don't eat peanuts - they really hurt when they come back up. Grim, very grim.

belgo · 23/04/2008 10:46

and steer well clear of anything spicy. Very very painful.

belgo · 23/04/2008 10:46

ice lollies and ice cream are usually ok.

stretchmarkqueen · 23/04/2008 12:31

Very cold pure apple juice was ok for me, also i drank everything through a straw. I was prescribed fortisip, a high calorie drink, and just used to sip tiny bits constantly. Not too bad coming back up either. Definitely agree on the peanuts. Poor you.

cmotdibbler · 23/04/2008 12:39

For patients on chemo they recommend chocolate blancmange or choc milkshake made with icecream as it tastes the same up and down, doesn't burn and is really nutritious so that even a little digested goes a long way.

BorgLady · 23/04/2008 12:55

Best thing I threw up was a grape and strawberry fruit salad DP kindly made me. It tasted like a smoothie on the way back up.

Worst thing was honey and mustard flavour Chicken Tonight. Still can't bear the thought of it now.

emmy1979 · 23/04/2008 12:55

AVOID at all cost dough balls. I dared myself to have one in the last week of my hyperemesis addled pregnancy and spent the whole night having nightmares after it took about 15 mins to yak up that horrendous little piece of s**t. Not bitter. Honestly.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/04/2008 12:57

Oh no I found noodles and spaghetti awful to throw up, too stringy (I swear I chew properly!) Especially when it's so violent it comes out of your nose.

I feel your pain. I learnt a bitter lesson when I went out for a mexican at 9 weeks pregnant, oh the burn the next morning!

EBenes · 23/04/2008 16:55

Brilliant tips! I always get the very acidy sicky first thing in the morning, and never thought of drinking water because I always think it's going to immediately trigger what is actually inevitable. Hope this helps save my teeth too! I am finding the posts quite hilarious in fact, thank you so much for them.

Ah, sick all day every day for 5 months, so I see myself as an expert on this!!

Avoid: tea, yoghurt, spaghetti (you might think you've chewed it, but it comes up full size!).

Good: porridge, and CUSTARD! That's my top tip - custard!!

Essie3 · 23/04/2008 17:23

BTW, let's hope this doesn't get to the attention of any pro-bulimia websites...

helsy · 23/04/2008 17:28

Gaviscon. Comes up in nasty pink lumps. Tomato soup, because it comes back up just as it went down, but faster.
Ginger tea stayed down for me. Made with fresh ginger. And when I was less bad, at about 5 months, for some bizarre reason croissants and hot chocolate - lived on that and nothing else for a few lovely weeks.

BettySpaghetti · 23/04/2008 17:45

Helsy -glad (well I'm not, but YNWIM) that I'm not the only one with experience of tomato soup.

It also, of course, has the added factor of looking really scary as you projectile vomit bright red puke into the toilet bowl

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/04/2008 18:07

Well thanks to my awful sickness in this pregnancy (now on medication so can eat again) I have discovered not to eat:

-eggs (above all other)
-potatoes
-crisps
all three of these are very slow to come back up and require real effort to vomit, which is not what you need in those over the toilet moments

-anything vinegary, I experienced pickled beetroot yuck!
-coke just looks so vile coming back again.
-popcorn.

It really is awful when what you can eat is dictated by what it's like to throw up as a food!

cosmicangel · 23/04/2008 20:43

thought i'd have lucazade to gave me energy but when threw up it just all came out of nose as frizzy foam, i think i looked rabid.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/04/2008 22:46

Vanilla icecream is nice second time round.

Actually I'm quite partial to regurgitated marmite on toast (sorry if this is making your nauseous but you did ask).

My morning sickness has returned after an eight week lapse (doh!) You have my empathy.

Armi · 23/04/2008 23:45

Is anyone else starting to feel a bit sick?

kitbit · 24/04/2008 19:33

oh poor poor you
My friend had similar and she ate nothing but sugarpuffs for about 6 months because apparently they taste the same both ways. I used to find drinking ribena makes things taste slightly better second time, and also stops what's coming out looking quite so much like traditional sick! sorry, gross

CilC · 24/04/2008 20:23

I found smoothies, icecream, ice lollies (especially if they are still cool) and chocolate acceptable when returning... Yoghurt tasted sour and was awful. I nearly choked/passed out on muesli and vegetables and avoid acidic and hot(as in curry)foods.
Foods high in fat also made me vomit more. In the end I was so exhausted that taste became less important, it was the possible choke factor that was my greater fear.
Good luck!

RiojaLover75 · 24/04/2008 20:29

Apples OK to throw up on, they taste the same going down as coming up .

Essie3 · 24/04/2008 20:34

Also remembered - I drank an Innocent Blueberry and Blackberry smoothie in my puking everything phase. I cannot begin to tell the horror of that sight. Any witnesses would have called a priest.

OFSTEDoutstanding · 24/04/2008 20:56

I was very sick with this pregnancy until about 20 weeks when it suddenly stopped it was all day every day and the best thing I found was Chocolate muffins taste the same either way!

ViolentFemme · 24/04/2008 21:03

Mint ice cream. I know someone who has this when she comes home having had a skinful, knowing it will make it all a lot nicer on the way back up, blee.

BroccoliSpears · 24/04/2008 21:12

Cornflakes aren't too bad coming back.
Yogurt as many others have said.

Avoid anything tomatoey. Eek.
