Pubic bone pain

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and about five hours ago I had a pilates class, it was with a new teacher so slightly different exercises than usual but definitely nothing strenuous or 'dangerous' seeming. Since then I've had bad pain in my pubic bone (not the whole area, just where pubic hair is), it's hard to describe. Very tender, lots of trapped nerves type feeling I think. Better when I'm lying then when sitting up, very achey when I sit up. Till now I haven't had any problems with pelvis pain, walking etc and though have quite a big bump I'm still slim and light. Any ideas? Have heard of SPD but this doesn't seem like that. Thank you!

Anyone? It hurts!

Achey = SPD to me.

Are you sure it's not?

Jazzicatz · 22/04/2008 18:25

Sounds like SPD to me!

Mip · 22/04/2008 18:29

Thanks guys. Not sure at all! Just thought SPD was the whole pelvis area and meant it was painful to walk, hence the waddle etc, rather than just located to the pubic bone area. Does it start more localised? Think I mean achey, as I said it's hard to describe, sore, tender, nervey etc.

This does sound like SPD, or at least the level of SPD that I had....just mild.

Does it hurt when you walk upstairs or getting in an out of the car? If so, it's more than likely your pubis symphisis separating slightly.

Ask your GP for a referral to the physio and they will give you some tips on avoiding it, like swinging legs out of the car together before standing up, and some exercises to help strenghten it. I suggest you get this seen to sooner rather than later as it's likely to worsen before the end of your pregnancy.

Did the teacher know you were pregnant?(probably a silly question if you're 31 weeks!). They should have told you to modify or avoid any exercises not suitable for pregnancy.

Mip · 22/04/2008 18:29

Meant thanks for answering, not thanks in a sarky way!

Get yourself to a physio, I'm going on Thursday as I have exactly the same pain and the more I walk, the worse it gets! Could be a number of things but I don't want it to get any worse with another 11 weeks till EDD.

lackaDAISYcal · 22/04/2008 18:31

some more info here

Mip · 22/04/2008 18:35

Hi Lackadaisycal, teacher does know (private class). My last teacher was great as I'd been with her for a couple of years and she was pregnant as well (hence her having stopped now) so she knew exactly what was good and not good. This is a trained instructor so supposedly knows what's allowed and what's not.

Haven't been up stairs (took lift!) or in cars since it happened as the pilates studio is on the ground floor of my building so not sure. Doesn't hurt more if widen my legs, lift them high etc, hurts when sitting which made me wonder if it could be something to do with nerves. But is hurting when I walk around too.

Hmm, so it could just be the beginning then gillythekid. Damn. Was just happily telling the sonographer yesterday how well I felt, no pains etc, that I was lucky! Silly me. Hope you get better soon!

Thanks v much for the link Lackadaisycal, will have a look at the site now.

Thats how mine started for going to a yoga class - because I didn't know what it was I carried on and then it became really painful. I would talk to the midwife about it before the pain gets any worse.

Mip · 22/04/2008 18:39

Just checked out the symptoms on the link and it says can just be focused in pubic area so it could be SPD. Only thing is it says that it causes pain to part legs, not hurting at all doing that for me now, but perhaps it doesn't at the very beginning...

Mip · 22/04/2008 18:43

Thanks Jazzicatz. Am surprised as have been doing pilates for a couple of years and throughout my pregnancy but perhaps it's the different exercises (even though I took it very very easy as they were new) or that I haven't done it for 3 weeks, or just that it was ready to be sparked off by anything. And as you say perhaps the signs were there and because I didn't know I carried on and made it worse. Do know that when I had my fundus measure a week ago it was much sorer when the midwife prodded there then it's been before.
Have an appointment with the midwife at the beginning of next week so will try and hold off till then unless it gets worse and then I will go in straight away.

Good luck mip - just take it easy until you have been checked over as it can get really painful if left.

Mip · 22/04/2008 18:53

Thanks Jazzicatz, if it's still the same tomorrow I will definitely book a time. Have heard how awful it can get and do not want that! Are you pregnant now with it or was it in the past, if pregnant now I hope that you're feeling better!

OP posts:
Jazzicatz · 22/04/2008 19:09

Had it in my first pregnancy - in my second I was aware and therefore did all the things I was supposed to do and the pain was much less. Good luck with your pregnancy x

Mip · 22/04/2008 19:40

Thank you!

Mip- I've only got it mild but it is SPD, and for me its just pain at pubic symphysis. Its not bad all the time, but rolling over in bed, getting up from lying down can be horrible sometimes. I'm fine doing squats, fine doing yoga class, usually fine getting out of a car. Fortunately having my legs parted doesn't seem to give me the expected problems, but I'm careful as I don't want to find out after the fact it hurts, when I've still got labour to get through! The important thing is to be aware of it, and get any good advice you can. I go to a chiropractor, and she's been really helpful. Waiting for NHS referral will probably come through after birth of my LO, so haven't bothered.
I got mine from spending a day laying laminate flooring- it didn't hurt at the time at all, just a bit generally all over achey from doing something a bit more physical for a longer time- it was the next day it hit me. My chiropractor says I probably just reaching for things and twisting, that I didn't notice, that's got me slightly out of alignment, so she just did a very mild adjustment thing.
Good luck- and hope it doesn'tget worse for you!

Mip · 22/04/2008 22:06

Thanks very much mumofk, that sounds very similiar then, and probably sparked off by doing slightly different exercises which put me a bit off balance with twisting etc. Really hope yours doesn't get worse either! x

Mip, my pain has been totally localised to the pubic bone - diagnosed as SPD at 22 weeks. I don't have any problems parting my legs either, although does hurt if I'm turning at the same time (getting out of the car). V worst is turning over in bed when pelvis 'cracks' and pain is excrutiating.

You need to ensure your MW knows cos they will need to know for labour in case you need an epidural.

May get worse, may just stabilise.

splodgesmum · 23/04/2008 14:07

sorry, that wasn't clear - don't mean you'll need an epidural cos you have SPD, meant if you have epidural with SPD they need to be aware so they don't manipulate your legs too much and damage the ligaments any further

Becky77 · 23/04/2008 15:05

I have SPD and it doesn't hurt to open my legs... I get pain only when getting up and down on the sofa or when turning in bed... Luckily it is pretty mild and only gets worse when I over exert myself at weekends... During the week whilst I'm sat at my desk all day it tends to fix itself.

Mip · 23/04/2008 15:14

Hi Splodgesmum and Becky77, thought the spreading the legs thing ( ykwim!) was the main thing so it's interesting to hear you both don't have that and that it's localised to your pubic bone Splodgesmum. Have emailed my midwife and am seeing her next Tuesday anyway, till then I'm going to take it easy and stay off the pilates! Hopefully like you Becky mine won't get worse or will feel better once not overdoing things.
Thanks v much for the epidural info Splodgesmum, v good to know. Sorry you have such awful pain though. Cracking sounds hideous .
Thanks so much both of you!

Mip hope it's not too bad today. I walked to my aquafit and yoga classes this week and am finding that it's the walking that's making it worse! Turned over in bed last night and..OUCH!!! Pain is solely in my pubic area so will let you know tomorrow what the physio says. I'll have to go everywhere on the bike from now on, much to the annoyance of my Mum who is doing ALL the worrying in this pregnancy!
