Pubic bone pain

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and about five hours ago I had a pilates class, it was with a new teacher so slightly different exercises than usual but definitely nothing strenuous or 'dangerous' seeming. Since then I've had bad pain in my pubic bone (not the whole area, just where pubic hair is), it's hard to describe. Very tender, lots of trapped nerves type feeling I think. Better when I'm lying then when sitting up, very achey when I sit up. Till now I haven't had any problems with pelvis pain, walking etc and though have quite a big bump I'm still slim and light. Any ideas? Have heard of SPD but this doesn't seem like that. Thank you!

Good luck tomorrow Gillythekid, would be great if you could let me know what your physio says. So sweet with your mum ! I think you're right about the walking though, I can feel it just pottering round the flat.

Oh and it's better today thank you! Completely gone this morning when I woke but then after half an hour or so it came back. Worse is sitting up straight... which my midwife says is the key helpful thing for SPD!

I had exactly the same thing. Yesterday after a yoga class and a bit too much walking, had real pain down there. Still hurt when I woke up in the night, but was ok this morning.

Think it's a sign that we really should be slowing down...

Mip · 24/04/2008 10:15

Hi Pregnantpenguin! Interesting you had the same too... you'd have thought it would be impossible to get any pain from pregnancy pilates/yoga - I know I could go in an evening dress and heels because I do so little there! However, as you say, time to slooooow down, am now going to start wincing and waddling and heaving myself up from chairs and forcing husband to give me lots of attention as he's got away with having a perky pregnant wife for too long!

Hi Mip

I was amazed that it went so completely. I had planned my call into work for the next day and everything. (I work in central London, there was no way I could have got on the tube in that much pain!).

Pain has come back every so often today actually, but only v slightly (no need for me to make involuntary yelps of pain). I agree, time for DH's to really be D's!!!

How far gone are you? I'm 33 weeks today.

gillythekid · 24/04/2008 12:39

Hi mip Just seen the physio and it is indeed SPD, now rebranded as pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain (not as catchy really!!) Good news is, we've caught it just in time so in theory, it shouldn't get any worse. My pelvis is misaligned, not helped by my left leg being longer than my right. She gave me some exercises to do and a very fetching pelvic girdle has been supplied. I'll see her every couple of weeks or as needs be. Your midwife can get you a really swift referral DON'T LEAVE IT!!! This is progressive and has left women with pain for months and years after giving birth if ignored. It's easily managed and the earlier you get it seen to, the better the outcome. Hope you're ok today

Mip · 24/04/2008 13:28

Hi Gillythekid, thanks so much for letting me know. PRPGP .
Great that it can be controlled (not so great about the girdle though!). Interesting about your legs, one of mine's a little shorter than the other two (discovered by my pilates teacher... felt like a monster once she'd finished going through all my little problems!) so that's probably got a lot to do with it. I'm seeing my midwife on Tuesday and if I don't feel she can help me enough herself then I'll ask to see a physio. I hope she will refer me rather than thinking she can handle it herself (she thinks she knows EVERYTHING!).
A friend of mine was in severe pain for over a year after giving birth (was on bed rest during last months of pregnancy and then in bed again for a few months after c-section), got PND and is still on and off anti-depressants two years later. Obviously she had it very severely but as you say it is something to take seriously, partic if we're lucky enough to catch it early.
Hope the exercises (and the lovely girdle) help! x

Aggh, should have previewed my message. Meant that one of my legs is shorter than the other too. Not two. Jeez, that would really have explained my SPD... sorry, PRPGP.

Hey Mip the physio did a range of manipulations that stabilised my pelvis today, a midwife wouldn't be qualified to do this so a referral is definitely best. I'll be going back in a couple of weeks for another fix and can call her whenever the pain gets bad for a quick top up. You should be able to see someone really quickly, I waited only 7 days for an appointment. Good luck and may our pelvic girdles be ever level.

Mip · 24/04/2008 13:39

I second that .
Thanks for letting me know about the manipulations, will try my best to press midwife otherwise I'll go down the private route for a session (live abroad and the system seems a little different here, not sure the midwife would send me unless I was screaming in agony - in her email she just said the usual, be careful getting out of cars etc and said it was very common and that we'd chat more when we met). Seems in UK (from threads I've seen) that physios are routine for SPD.

No pain Friday or yesterday, so thought everything ok and that I'd over reacted. However walked for about an hour and a half today - very slowly and gently, but still the pain is back. OUCH!!!

Next midwife appointment on Tuesday...will see what she says...

PregnantPenguin · 27/04/2008 20:35

And better again today....I see a pattern emerging here.

Mip · 27/04/2008 22:04

Hi Pregnantpenguin, been away all w/e and walking lots but no pain yet so that's good. Have cancelled my Tuesday pilates till I've talked to the midwife (seeing her later that afternoon). Glad your pain is better again (having got bad you poor thing!). Well take it very easy and let's update each other after our Tues midwife appointments! Oh and forgot to answer to your earlier post about how pregnant I was... 32 weeks. Am looking forward to being 33 like you - 7 weeks sounds so much less than 8 (and a whole lot scarier!).
