Q. Are there any swimming strokes that are bad for me? My (normally very sensible) mother has expressed some concern that there's some strokes I shouldn't be doing. Anyone?

MarsLady · 22/04/2008 15:36

Breast stroke. It's all about the frog legs!

ImightbeLulumama · 22/04/2008 15:48

Your ligaments are looser. So... those frog legs open up the pelvis.

Of course I'm no pregnancy exercise expert but I'd guess you wouldn't want your pelvis opening too soon.

lol!

slinkiemalinki · 22/04/2008 15:52

OK - could quite a bit of very gentle breast stroke have contributed to my PROM without labour following last time (and thus induction), do you think, clever knowledgeable ladies?

Slinki,

its unlikely. It basically if you have SPD to avoid doing anything to aggrevate it. So not doing breast stroke is a good idea. This I was told by my consultant, physio and osteopath all treating me for my severe spd when preg with DS2.

Starlight, LOL.

slinkiemalinki · 22/04/2008 16:00

Thanks. Wondered if I had been thumping poor baby's head down into my pelvis up and down all those lengths.
Still, it is silly questions thread hey?!

hertsnessex · 22/04/2008 16:00

"IMPORTANT re breaststroke: Best check with your doctor or physio BEFORE doing exercise involving movement such as breaststroke during (and for a short time after) pregnancy. Physiotherapists have always advised me NOT to swim breaststroke while pregnant and after. "Pregnancy hormones such as oestrogen and relaxin cause the joints of your pelvis to become slightly looser than normal" (from ?Protecting your back and pelvis during pregnancy? found on this website by Alison Bourne, women's health physiotherapist). As a result certain movements, i.e. breaststroke, can cause damage to the pelvic area, including hips. Also NOTE ? the body continues to produce these hormones for some time AFTER birth too. I was told to stick to straight legs only."

hertsnessex · 22/04/2008 16:01

slinki, it is indeed!!!

EffiePerine · 22/04/2008 16:10

what about running? Have just started again and it's about the only exercise I have time to do. I stopped really early last time round, can I keep goign for a while longer? Obviously not until term

MarsLady · 22/04/2008 16:12

Yes. Gentle exercise is good for you. As long as you don't take up something strenuous and new!

EffiePerine · 22/04/2008 16:13
MarsLady · 22/04/2008 16:15

Far too strenuous!!!!!!!

needahand · 22/04/2008 16:17

Ok I have got one. Can you belly split from being so tight (it sometimes feel like it will)

doggiesayswoof · 22/04/2008 16:19

Oh, me, I have a silly question

How can I put my feet up (to lessen attractive balloon feet effect) and also sit upright to aid foetal positioning BOTH AT THE SAME TIME?

I don't think this is physically possible. (Am 35 wks btw)

MarsLady · 22/04/2008 16:20

No my angel! Of course do feel free to be the first! [horrified emoticon]

MarsLady · 22/04/2008 16:20

doggies: put said feet up. Put pillows behind back to cause you to sit forward. not entirely convinced how long this position will work for you but hey....

ImightbeLulumama · 22/04/2008 16:22

i would raise the end of your mattress up on a few folded towels to keep your feet elevated at night. and sit on a birth ball in the day

MamaG · 22/04/2008 16:22

Thanks lovelies! I will be back, no doubt, so do keep an eye open...
