first baby- when did you start buying baby stuff?

I'm 16 weeks - is it too early to start buying the odd item for the baby? I can't resist a sale! I have been looking at lots of different sites online and would like to order a few things, but feel it is really early and if anything goes wrong later -touches wood - then I won't be able to return it. When did you start shopping for baby stuff, for the nursery etc? btw I've not been tempted to buy clothes, only sensible things.

Thanks!

After 20 week scan I started cautiously buying a few bits and pieces. But I am a real scaredy cat. I know people who had their nurseries and layettes done by your stage!!

MrsMattie · 21/04/2008 13:13

At around 7 months. I was far to superstitious to buy before then. I'll be the same this time around, to be honest.

schneebly · 21/04/2008 13:15

Oh goodness with my first I told everyone straigh away and started buying stuff as soon as I had my 12 week scan! I don't buy into all that tempting fate stuff! I think you should just enjoy it.

Mumsnut · 21/04/2008 13:17

About 2 years before he was born!

KMUN · 21/04/2008 13:19

30 weeks and some of the earlier stuff I bought I didn't use. Was also somewhat superstitious. For me, stockpiling generally means things don't get used. Next time, would probably wait until I went on maternity leave. Kiddy clothes are tempting, but they're always available and it's so nice to buy things after they are born.

MrsBadger · 21/04/2008 13:22

20wk scan

there are sales all the time

and you don;t actually need that much stuff

by far the most sensible things to do are
a) to use this time to do research into things like the safest carseats, pushchairs suitable for your lifestyle etc, then do the actual buying later.
b) clear the crap out the spare room and
c) paint it cream

lollipopmother · 21/04/2008 13:34

We bought the nursery at the weekend purely because the items we wanted were in a 1 day sale with 21% off, but they aren't coming out of the boxes to be made until at least 7 months. The in-laws have bought loads of stuff right from the off, I don't mind that as it'll be them taking it back not me if anything should go wrong.

lollipopmother · 21/04/2008 13:34

Oh, I'm 20 weeks, forgot to add that bit.

MrsBadger · 21/04/2008 13:40

'bought the nursery'

what?

lollipopmother · 21/04/2008 13:41

The cot and changing table thingy to go in the baby room.

Seabright · 21/04/2008 13:46

I have been looking and choosing some things, but haven't bought yet (although I really do want to!). I am 12 weeks.

To try and stop myself I have sorting out some of the crap belongings we already have, chucking lots out to make space and have less clutter. I am also starting to make casseroles for the freezer, as am assuming I won't always have time to prepare a three-course dinner once baby arrives!!

I am finding that the preparation stuff is helping me to not buy stuff, as the more stuff I sort the more I see how un-ready I am at the moment!

lollipopmother · 21/04/2008 13:50

How long does stuff actually last in the freezer then, you've still got another 6 months at least to go!

maxbear · 21/04/2008 13:50

I did a huge mothercare shop at 18 weeks (in the days before I realised how expensive mothercare really is!) I didn't want to be huge and knackered trapsing round the shops at a later date. I figured if it all went pear shaped I would go for another one straight away anyway. I think I did my Christmas shopping in August for the same reason!

carmenelectra · 21/04/2008 13:55

FIRST time i opened a Mothercare account at 13wks!. Had pretty much everything by about 5mths and bedroom done too.

Im not superstitious and like to be organised!

2nd time i probably started at around the same time although i bought less. I agree that you actually dont need that much really and i agree re PAINTING IT CREAM!!

I carried on buying bits n bobs right up to the end with both though

carmenelectra · 21/04/2008 13:55

i mean painting the nursery cream!

MrsTittleMouse · 21/04/2008 14:05

I am superstitious and I didn't get everything until the third trimester. Mind you, I spent an AGES researching the cot, car seat and pushchair, which was all time well-spent.

lollipopmother · 21/04/2008 14:09

I painted the room at the weekend - Moongold would be being specific, but you could call it cream!

babybarmy · 21/04/2008 16:39

Get things when you want to..I was sucked into the whole superstition thing but this is such a lovely and fun time and buying a baby grow or a cot mobile isn't going to promptly end your pregnancy.I've got new baby clothes I bought during a pregnancy where I miscarried and I dont feel funny about saving it for this pregnancy at all.

i'm 17 weeks and I have bought some clothes..I dont need many things as I have kept everything from my first baby. But,it's so exciting, even 2nd time around.I'm putting a halt to any more shopping until I know if I need pink or blue.Enjoy it and go with your instinct!!

JessJess3908 · 21/04/2008 17:01

I'm 21 weeks and have been to superstitious to buy much yet. But I do think that if anything went wrong I would be so devestated that it wouldn't matter if i had wasted money on things i couldn't return.

So far i have only given in to temptation once and bought a pink baby gro in the sale. DP was not pleased as we don't know what we're having and I'm meant to be happy either way !

JessJess3908 · 21/04/2008 17:03

PS - can anyone recommend good places to buy the nursery from (cot and chest of drawers/changing table)?

slinkiemalinki · 21/04/2008 17:39

White Company (if you like white)
Mamas and Papas
John Lewis.

kookiegoddess · 21/04/2008 18:51

thanks for your tips ladies. Will go with my instinct and buy the odd item but will leave the bulk of the shopping till later on. Just wanted to make sure people didn't think I was nuts - I have to say the most maddening thing about being pregnant is that no-one takes you seriously for the 1st 4-5 months - it seems to always be too early! Well, I'm 16 weeks and proud to be almost at the halfway mark!

Cheers, k

I'm a scaredy-wuss and didn't buy anything till after the anamoly scan at 20wks and even then only a few white babygros. Major purchases of pram and cot at 28wks and have bought small things (nappies, wipes etc) with our weekly shop since about 24wks. I really don't believe you can actually tempt fate, I didn't buy things coz I personally couldn't bear to look at them if anything went wrong. You need to buy when you feel ready to. I bought my cot from kiddicare.com and pram from ladybugs.com. Got a decent changing table from Ikea for about 17 quid. Bargain. I tried to avoid shopping in actual shops so that I didn't get carried away with useless (if a bit gorgeous) stuff. I preferred to save on the frivolous stuff and spend a bit more on the essential items. Though, I suspect when my ML starts in 3 weeks, a few frivolous things shall be bought!

biglips · 21/04/2008 19:02

i was 7 months pg. didnt buy a single thing before then as was working alot then.

lollipopmother · 21/04/2008 20:01

I got the nursery items from Ikea, chose from the catalogue before we went so we knew what we wanted, and when we got there it looked much better than we were expecting. I never would have got it so early but there was a 1 day only 21% off sale and Ikea NEVER have sales!
