first baby- when did you start buying baby stuff?

I'm 16 weeks - is it too early to start buying the odd item for the baby? I can't resist a sale! I have been looking at lots of different sites online and would like to order a few things, but feel it is really early and if anything goes wrong later -touches wood - then I won't be able to return it. When did you start shopping for baby stuff, for the nursery etc? btw I've not been tempted to buy clothes, only sensible things.

Thanks!

Buy stuff when you want!
If you are excited and want to go shopping, then sod the superstitions and the misery guts people that say 'oh its far too early', go shopping and ENJOY it while you are not too heavy and tired!

FoghornLeghorn · 21/04/2008 20:08

I'm 24 weeks and so far have a cot & mattress(friend gave to us, brand new) and some bedding left over from DD2 (blankets and sheets). Apart from that I've brought 2 packs of nappies, some sponges and some cotton wool

I have been researching prams though and will purchase along with car seat when DH's tax return comes through (fingers crossed it does or DC3 will be using DD2's old bits).

The cot boxes are doing my head in just lying around some am probably going to paint the spare room white/cream soon and get the cot up so it's not such a mess

FoghornLeghorn · 21/04/2008 20:09

I had brought loads by now with DD1 - we had clothes, vest, sleepsuits, bibs, travel system, car seat, crib, cot, wardrobe, toiletries everything ....
Go for it if you aren't superstitious

Ambi · 21/04/2008 20:11

About 7 months. Think I only bought some bibs and muslin cloths before that.

georgiemama · 21/04/2008 20:14

8.5 months - my mum made me in the end. I was seriously superstitious (got a very stern "you're supposed to be a Christian") talk from mum so went to buy a few sleepsuits etc at that point.

Moses basket was a leaving gift from work but it was at mum's house. Wouldn't even order pram let alone have it in house - DH ordered it online the day DS was born.

Nursery was not properly decorated/sorted until DS was about 6 weeks old .

Lmccrean · 21/04/2008 20:16

I started buying stuff 2 weeks before dd was due, but had been planning everything up til then, and was given a few bits and pieces. I loved the splurge in one day with all my hard earned savings...went into labour at midnight that night tho!

Ambi · 21/04/2008 21:02

we did the same lmcrean, spent months making lists and researching best value items then a big splurge.

pucca · 21/04/2008 21:06

I bought stuff straight away, and told everyone straight away! infact i was a bit silly and bought all neutral stuff, which of course when i found out i was having a girl never got used!

I don't believe in the superstition (sp?) of it all, but to please my mum i kept the cot and pram at her house

Orissiah · 22/04/2008 19:08

I'm now 34 weeks and bought my first 4 baby grows at Green Baby in Islington. That's all I have. Now I am on maternity leave I plan on buying online from John Lewis and Mothercare (for the big things) and smaller independent e-tailers (for the small things / clothes) in the next week or so. Like some others on here though I have spent a good few months researching what I need and want so buying should be a quick process. O

Kezza7779 · 22/04/2008 21:24

im 23 weeks and have almost bought eveything, its all round at mums until about 34 weeks tho!
Ikea for cot - £49 has 2 different heights and the side comes off to make a cot bed!!!! (Also matches the birch furnitue i have in my bedooms aleady)

minouminou · 22/04/2008 22:49

day after the positive test i bought a couple of vests
i just thought "well, if this pregnancy goes wrong, we'll still need this stuff"
none of this superstition nonsense at chez minou - just cold hard economics

I had my dating scan around 11wks and I started buying some maternity clothes around that date as that seemed to be the cue for my body to start flowering. I don't recall the exact time I bought stuff for the baby - I remember buying a baby towel and hat in Morrisons as they were so cheap and I was broke. My parents bought me nappies - both sorts, as I was undecided, bottles, ff milk etc was bought after dd was born. The thing I bought a lot of in pg (even turning them around) was breast pads as I had to start wearing them from about 6mo on. It was fatal letting myself get too hot as I started to leak everywhere!

The baby furniture: my parents bought me the cot, I reserved the pram at Easter (dd born in June so we collected it a couple of weeks before EDD) and the carseat was bought a few weeks before. As I was livng away from my parents and was effectively on my own, my hospital case was packed ready to go whilst my parents had the carseat at their house. I don't remember buying baby toiletries but I must have done since they were in my hospital bag .

I bought 3 babygros and a bear when we decided we would ttc last year. Liked the idea of baby having one or two things we had bought for her when she wasn't even a twinkle in our eye. Dd is asleep on me now wearing one of the babygros.

specialmagiclady · 22/04/2008 23:21

I bought quite early as I was due at the end of Jan and I didn't want to be heaving my enormous self around shops either in pre-Christmas rush or in January sales. I had taken care of all the major purchases by 7 months.

I hate shopping in sales. I'd rather pay extra than have to fight through piles of junk to get to the one good bit that's left and find it's the wrong size/missing a bit/just plain ugly which is why nobody bought it when it was full-price.

LaComtesse · 22/04/2008 23:28

SML - my dd wore Winnie the Pooh Christmas baby-gros in June as my Mum went on a post-Christmas sales spree for me and she bought tons of stuff then (making sure to buy something for my dn at the same time). She then fretted that my baby would be wearing Christmas-themed clothes in the summer (they were normal baby-gros but with Christmas logos on). I had to point out if I waited til the next Christmas, new-born clothes wouln't fit a 6mo .

Amberc · 23/04/2008 10:54

I'm 33 weeks and am just waiting for the last thngs to arrive. Up until 30 weeks I made a list of everything I needed, adding to it as and when I came accross something useful or a recommendation. I used pregnancy magazines to pick out the best ones based on their tried and tested sections and went out and tried a few prams etc. I made sections on my list like changing, bathing, sleeping etc and then when I came to buy everything it was a breeze. I still can't believe someone here has started freezing meals at 12 weeks though - blimey!

beakas · 23/04/2008 13:30

Hi Kookie, I am having the same dilemna, am 15.5 weeks (not being TOO specific) and have bought a hat, mittens and blanket from tesco (white and very cute)but that is it so far. I want to wait til after my 20 week scan ideally, largely because I can save some money by then! I am planning on Ikea for cot, changing table/drawers and will probably economise in tesco for rest. I have been doing lots of research though on prams etc. and planning to buy those at about 8 months gone. I am going to try my hardest not to go too mad!! Good luck with everything

Becky77 · 23/04/2008 15:10

We started buying gradually after the 12 week scan

Laurenb03 · 22/11/2023 15:59

When do people start buying clothes, bottles & nursery stuff?
I'm scared to buy to early

MrsJ6921 · 22/11/2023 17:00

@Laurenb03 I’m 34 weeks now and we started to buy ‘big’ things from about 20 weeks! But before this I bought the odd outfit etc. Our nursery was complete by about 31/32 weeks.

You’ll find people will tell you to leave it until later etc especially here on MN however I have no regrets over buying things as I’m a naturally organised person!

Definitely take into account that some items may have longer delivery lead times. Like we ordered our travel system in August and were told any later we wouldn’t have it in time for our due date as the manufacturer closes their factory over Christmas.

Good Luck and do what feels right for you!
