Pregnancy after copper IUD, success stories?

i have a copper iud fitted and will be getting it removed to try for a baby.

I suffer from anxiety however and have convinced myself I will have damaged my uterus/womb, or compromised the quality of my eggs/overies by having a foreign object in there.

I know fertility goes back to normal immediate but I worry about the long term effect my body could then pass onto a baby.

I didn’t really have all these feeling when opting for a copper iud.

I am 36/37 so already have the worries of being an ‘older mum’ and feel stupid to have had something inserted that could potentially harm a growing baby (according to my brain).

would love to hear your success stories? How long after iud removal did you conceive, how old were you and was your pregnancy and baby healthy?

A copper coil with no issues (ie. It hasn’t perforated your uterus or caused an infection or anything like that) will have no effect on your fertility.

I got pregnant about 18 months after mine was removed - we weren’t trying, DS was a ‘surprise’. DD came along two years later. Both standard, uncomplicated pregnancies (minus the horrific sickness anyway), which both went overdue.

I had my copper coil out and got pregnant within weeks. I was 37. Pregnancy and baby completely normal. (Child is now at primary school).
Sorry to hear about your anxiety. Your eggs and uterus will not be affected, and unlike other forms of contraception, there are no hormones to get out of your system. Good luck with ttc 😊

I got pregnant 2 months after having a copper iud removed. I was 34, 35 when I had a healthy baby boy and went on to have another at 38. No problems at all. Hoping it goes smoothly for you.

SherlockHolmess · 01/09/2024 22:31

I had one (that on removal was found to have broken inside me! Luckily the broken bit came out by itself after they removed the big bit!) and got pregnant after three months at 37 without really trying.

You’ll be fine.

How long did you have the copper coil before removal?

and how old was your DH? Mine is 41 so another thing giving me anxiety.

Thank you for your response, really helped!

I got pregnant at 36 on my third cycle trying after getting copper coil removed. Unfortunately ended in miscarriage but that was nothing to do with the coil! Chromosomal most likely, hadn’t even occurred to me to blame the coil and I’m an anxious person myself. Got pregnant again first cycle trying after MC, now a few weeks along. DH is 38, as I see you asked another poster that.

As soon as the coil is removed, you’re potentially fertile, because the copper isn’t present anymore. In the absence of physical damage (which is a vanishingly small risk I would think, or it wouldn’t be a viable contraceptive option), I can’t quite understand what you’re concerned about? I know that anxiety isn’t rational though! Hope these responses put your mind at ease.

Just worried the copper will somehow cause long lasting imbalances within the womb or affect egg quality generally while in there.

I know my thoughts aren’t rational but can’t help but feel this way.

Hi, I have had two copper coils in for over 10 years combined and both times when I have had them removed I conceived within three weeks (so my first cycle). Both pregnancies went smoothly and I now have a 9 year old and 5 year old from them Smile

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 01/09/2024 23:21

I'm the product of a pregnancy with a copper coil supposedly in situ, so I should imagine you'd be fine after removal 💕🤣

I had coil for about 2.5 years (between pregnancies) DH was 38. As a PP says, you are fertile as soon as the coil is removed. Perhaps you should see a GP to reassure you that the copper has no lasting effects?

CamFoz · 01/09/2024 23:27

I got pregnant straight away after my copper coil was removed. Pregnancy was smooth, baby was breech, but I'm pretty sure that was nothing to do with the copper coil.

Good luck getting pregnant!

nambypamby1 · 01/09/2024 23:28

Had mine out to try for my 2nd at 31 was pregnant within 3 months
My pregnancy had medical issues (unlinked to copper coil) 2nd time around but delivery and my baby were fine although she was 4 weeks early.
For me the copper IUD didn't cause any issues but I do prefer the mirena as there's no heavy longer periods - so on my 2nd mirena now
Hope you conceive soon if that's what you want and you feel less anxious x

Pregnant first cycle after removal of mine.
DP was 33 at the time we conceived, and we have a happy healthy baby that I am currently sat feeding who will be 1 in a few weeks.

OP, I say this as gently as possible and as a person who suffers from anxiety myself - it might be worth seeking some help for your anxiety. You’ve got a lot of people here saying they successfully conceived post copper coil, but rather than that being reassuring, it seems you’re then just looking for other reasons why they may have been successful and you won’t (eg their age), and querying whether the pregnancy / baby was healthy even if conception was straightforward.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest the copper coil will impact egg quality or somehow disturb the womb and prevent a woman from successfully carrying a pregnancy. There is, however, evidence to suggest that extreme stress can impact the menstrual cycle / ovulation. The very best thing you can do for yourself and your TTC efforts now is probably to get off Mumsnet and focus on taking the best care of yourself, both physically and mentally.

Wishing you all the best in your TTC journey x

Thank you, you're right.

I think the anxiety is stemming from mine and DH's ages and I don't want any other variables on top of that, but yes, my mind seems to find something else to worry about.

I have found the posts above reassuring.

I had an IUD for much longer than it’s "use by date”- I’m talking YEARS longer. I was so anxious that I’d have caused damage by leaving it so long but I conceived the first cycle after having it removed. Had a straightforward pregnancy, she’s now a very happy 20 month old and I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant with #2. I was 33 and DH 35 when we had our first

annlee3817 · 03/09/2024 03:58

I got pregnant straight away after having the coil removed, both DH and I were 40, resulting DD is now a healthy happy 2 year old. I had had the copper coil in for 4 years when it was removed

GnomeDePlume · 03/09/2024 04:24

DC3 was born practically clutching my copper coil!

Pregnancy and birth all fine. Ages 33 (me), 36 (DH). DC3 is a science graduate, married, working as a civil servant.

Beetlebum1981 · 03/09/2024 04:34

I had my coil removed at the end of May, DD2 was born at the beginning of March and is now 6. It was a bit of a shock for DH & I as it'd had taken a while to conceive DD1!

Oceangreyscale · 03/09/2024 04:41

I had one and got pregnant the first time we had sex, after getting it removed.
