Two missed miscarriages- any stories of hope?

Hi guys

Found out today that I’ve had another mmc. I can’t really believe it. I had a scan at 9+2 and everything was fine. Last time it happened at 8+3 (almost a year ago exactly).

I had no symptoms so no bleeding or cramping but was told at the 12 week scan. I’m heartbroken. Id got my hopes up and thought everything might be fine. I already have 1 son and had a straightforward pregnancy but this time round things seem to be different.

Can anyone share any success stories please? If you had a successful pregnancy after did you do anything differently? My head is scrambled and I can’t face going through this again.

Thank you xx

I had 3 miscarriages. One missed. Had my thyroid tested which was borderline low. Started taking a low dose of thyroxine and my next pregnancy was successful.

Got a gorgeous, smart, funny 10 year old now.

I'm sorry you are going through this, it really is utterly shit. I hope things change for you as they did for me x

@Hellothere89 After the second MMC I started the IVF process and was found to have severely deficient vitamin d levels. I started on a high dose of that.

We then had the chemical which was an IVF loss but the cycle after that we tried naturally and I took my leftover progesterone from 3dpo following a study I read. That was the cycle I got pregnant with my daughter :)

Ah that’s interesting, thank you. Tommys actually recommend vit d testing as one of the first options and so I’ve ordered a private blood test this morning. Historically I have been deficient so will see what that says. So glad you then got pregnant with your daughter.

Hi @Hellothere89 I empathise so much with your situation, I have had 2 miscarriages one MMC and one weird pregnancy that never really got off the ground but I am now pregnant and currently 14 weeks so fingers crossed everything is going as it should. I did a lot of research and took a few different things this pregnancy, who knows if they helped or not but I thought I'd share. I started taking methylfolate instead of just folic acid, apparently some people can't process folic acid as efficiently in certain forms due to genetic factors I also took a methyl B12 (I'm vegetarian so might not be as important for you), I took baby aspirin 75mg a day, basically all the time and haven't stopped. I also took this supplement called NAC you can read a study about it's effectiveness in recurrent pregnancy loss here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18983759/ and due to previous losses I am also on progesterone until 16 weeks. In addition I have always been taking high strength vitamin d and folic acid. Prior to conception I also took coq10 but stopped when I found out I was pregnant.

My partner I made wear only loose boxers, no hot baths, and a vitamin regimen, he has had a sperm analysis previously which came back fine so no major issues we're aware of there. I also had investigations for IVF so knew my details seemed fine from what they could tell!

Who knows if this protocol changed anything, I do believe that the majority of losses are genetic factors beyond our control not that it makes it any easier to deal with when it happens but it gives me a sense of control that I find helpful to make changes. I would also note because I haven't been eligible for recurrent loss investigations I've made these changes off my own research so they haven't been recommended by a medical professional just as a disclaimer!

I wish you so much luck and healing moving forward, it's a horrible thing to live through and you have all my sympathies and warm wishes for a successful pregnancy in the future <3

N-acetyl cysteine for treatment of recurrent unexplained pregnancy loss - PubMed

Pregnancy could be associated with a state of oxidative stress that could initiate and propagate a cascade of changes that may lead to pregnancy wastage. This process of oxidative stress may be suppressed by the antioxidant effect of N-acetyl cysteine...

Thanks so much for sharing this - that’s so helpful! I know exactly what you mean about taking control - it feels like it’s helping and sometimes that’s what you need to get through. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

Hello egg2410, I also would like to thank you for the very useful info you have typed out herel. Sorry for your previous losses and huge congratulations and best of luck for your current pregnancy.
Reading your note, I just wondered why you were taking both methyfolate and folic acid. I absolutely get why you have opted for the methyfolate and I take this too but I just wondered why both. I was under the impression that if you do have the gene that means you dont process folic acid well it is best avoided so I just thought I would ask you, hope you dont mind x

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/08/2024 22:00

3 m/cs. 2 missed. All the NHS tests that were available. Told 'one of those things, try again'.
Got pg, had bleeding and had a scan. Was shown a heartbeat and an empty sac that was the cause of the bleeding.

DD1 is now 23. Got pg with DD2 with no problems and she's now 19.

Wise0wl · 22/08/2024 08:52

@Hellothere89 I’m so sorry for your loss.

I have one DC, followed by two consecutive MMCs. Like you, early scans looked good, until they didn’t. I had MVAs both times and am now 25 weeks pregnant 🤞

I was on progesterone for the second MMC and my current pregnancy. For my current pregnancy, I also took CoQ10 (for about 2.5 months, started straight after the second MMC until positive test) and having read a lot, also took low dose aspirin from positive test until 12 weeks. I had bloods done after the second MMC but nothing showed up.

I am so so sorry for your losses, it’s horrendously unfair. I hope your MVA goes smoothly today, and let me know if you ever want to chat x

Hi @Carportforme no worries at all! To be honest it's because I still have some left and plan to just use them up and then stop, I'm not 100% sure I have the gene but I did do some sleuthing on my 23andme raw data file and it seems I have potentially at least one faulty gene from what I can tell from my probably incorrect interpretation means I'm 40% less able to process it than someone who has 2 correct genes so just figured the more the merrier! You could definitely just take methylfolate though, I am just the kind of person who thinks more is more :)

Thank you so much for replying. I am not certain I have the gene either but I am celiac so I know it's more common. From my research I just made the decision that 5 methyl was the way to go because whether you have the gene or not it seems to be processed better than folic acid and it's much harder to end up with a system overload of it x

WiseOwl, thinking of you and wishing you well. It is very hard. I remember waiting to be taken down for surgery after my shock MMC. I still get tearful about it and even more tearful, to be honest, when I stupidly allow myself to think about the 12 week scan when we bot the news,
Hoping we all get better news moving forwards and sending you a hug x

I just wanted to update this thread in case it is helpful for anyone else in future. I now have my own success story - my DS2 was born last week. An expert was recommended on here (Dr Mohiyiddeen - she was amazing), I had a consultation with her and she prescribed me some medication (including aspirin). Either it was a coincidence or it worked. I’m extremely grateful, it gave me hope during a long and lonely journey. I hope this gives others hope too.

4th one stuck for me, and is currently 9 years old. I didn’t manage a second, but DS is amazing and definitely worth all the heartbreak.
