How long were you in hospital after a c section?

I had a c section in 2020 but I also had preeclampsia which meant a longer stay. I have another c section booked in October. All things being uncomplicated, how quickly could you go home? I found the post natal ward hell last time so would be keen to leave as soon as I'm well. I'm assuming anything between 1-3 days?

My first was an emergency and I was in 5 days after. Second was elective for medical reasons and ended up pretty complicated but I was turfed out the following evening. My bp was so low I had to leave in a wheelchair and I was in agony because the discharge took so long they didn’t give me the next round of meds. It wasn’t great. But by the time I was home I was glad of my own bed.

Baby was born in the morning, I was home by 6ish the following day and could have left earlier but she hadn't passed any meconium so they wanted to wait for that before we left

I had what was technically an emergency c-section, but as I hadn't actually gone into any meaningful labour, it felt a bit like an elective (barring taking place at 2 in the morning) in that I wasn't completely exhausted from hours of labour first. she was born at 2am and we spent the rest of that night, the next day and night and then went home after that. So only one full night in the actual ward.

I think it really depends on how quickly you are up and moving around. I was standing up about 2 minutes after I got them to take the catheter out and and honestly, felt so much better moving around that I was up and about a lot which made the midwives happy that I wasn't too restricted or struggling.

Discharged the next day.

24 hours (6pm-7pmish) - they said I could stay for one more night but I hated the ward and wanted to go home. Emergency plus PPH but I was mobile and using the toilet so they were ok with it

I had an emergency c section at 6am and was discharged at 9pm the following day!

paristotokyo · 12/08/2024 15:28

10 days first and 6 days with the second. It was really hard being there that long, especially the second time as I was in the general ward. First time I had a private room and that was fine.

I had an emergency section last month in the early hours of Sunday morning and was discharged Tuesday afternoon. I think they’d of let me go on the Monday but I had an infection and they weren’t happy with my blood results so kept me another night to retest them.

hulahoopqueen · 12/08/2024 15:29

DD born 2am Sunday, we were home 6pm Monday

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 12/08/2024 15:30

First one was elective but did not go to plan. Still, only in 2 nights - one in the high dependency room (private room, private midwife) and one in the private room I had booked ahead of time.

Second was a straightforward elective, still had to stay in 1 night 🙄🙄 born 9:30am and home 4 ish the next day.

Waiting for discharge is its own special kind of torture 😤

Pinkdressandahighpony · 12/08/2024 15:32

First 6 days. Second 19 hours.
Both emergency/‘planned’ emergency.

Shibr · 12/08/2024 15:33

15hrs

jackstini · 12/08/2024 15:34

Dd emcs - 2 nights
Ds elcs - 6 nights - but that's because he had severe jaundice. Usually elcs is 1 night I was told

Tir3edAndTested · 12/08/2024 15:34

48 hours, but could have been a day earlier if my blood pressure wasn't doing cartwheels

Inlaw · 12/08/2024 15:40

Section at c. 10am (obviously I arrived a few hours earlier).

Left about 3/4pm the next day.

Ponderingwindow · 12/08/2024 15:41

I had a very complicated C-section. I could have left after 24 hours, but they wanted dc to stay for 48.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 12/08/2024 15:57

EMCS around 1am Monday, discharged on Thursday pm but the discharge process took all morning.

Wouldn't let me out until DC1 was feeding properly which was tricky as my milk didn't come in until I got home.

WhoUsesTypeWritersNEway · 12/08/2024 16:06

C section was finished by 6pm on Monday and I was at home on the sofa by 4:30pm the Tuesday. Mine was a scheduled c section in 2021

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 12/08/2024 16:25

Had DC at 9am, was home by midday the following day.

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2024 16:38

2003 I was in three days.
2005 I was in four days as she was in NICU for three and babies have to spend one night in the ward after NICU just in case.

penguinonmybag · 12/08/2024 16:42

First on the list for elective section, home the next day at my insistence, having shown them that I was up and about and didn't need significant analgesia.

Businessflake · 12/08/2024 17:01

I think Covid has changed things. Unless there is a medical need to keep either of you in there is usually no reason to keep you in more than one night. The earlier you deliver in the day the more likely that is to hold.

longdistanceclaraclara · 12/08/2024 17:09

EMCS 10pm Monday, discharged 10am Wednesday which wasn't ideal as Dts were in nicu and we lived over an hour away from the hospital as had to be moved out from our local one and there were no rooms for family on the nicu.

sel2223 · 12/08/2024 19:01

24 hours with my first (and that was with pre-eclampsia in 2020 same as you). I'd been in 6 days before the section date but, as soon as she was here, they couldn't wait to get me out the door.

Loub55 · 12/08/2024 19:04

Two planned C sections.

First in 2017, born at 10am home by 3pm next day

Second was in 2021, born at 11.30am and discharged at 9pm the following day (would have been earlier but they were having computer issues)

I believe unless there are any problems they aim to discharge after 24 hrs
