Can gender scan be wrong??

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone has found out the sex of their baby during a scan to then give birth to the opposite of what they were told?!

Background - I went for a private scan at 16/17wks & the girl spent a bit of time looking at measurements of the baby & explaining that the placenta was sitting at the front - she then told me, quite quickly, that the baby is a boy, however didn’t actually show me anything on the screen & the only images I was sent were of the baby’s head & feet. My husband doesn’t want to know what we’re having this time so I didn’t get it confirmed at my 20wk anomaly scan so I’m now 26wks and wondering “was she right?!”

Am I having a boy or could I infact give birth to a girl?! I feel like I still have a bit of wonder which is nice I guess…. 🩵🩷 all stories appreciated xx

I know someone who were told they were having a boy and then a couple of months later they discovered it was actually a girl 😅

Ahh really!! Did they find out during a scan or when they gave birth? Xx

I assume you wanted a girl.

Sunshineandrainbow · 01/08/2024 19:04

I know someone who was told a girl at scan and gave birth to a boy.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 01/08/2024 19:06

Yes, can be wrong, especially if a single scan early on. In my case I had scans every week and it was very clear he was a boy 🤣

rosiethenplease · 01/08/2024 19:09

I have never known anyone who had it told to them wrongly.

Soitis83 · 01/08/2024 19:09

It's rare they get a boy wrong, especially at 16/17 weeks.

Noonooo · 01/08/2024 19:09

Usually it's the other way round - boys are mistaken for girls as they hide their penis. It's obvious when it's a boy.

GladAllOver · 01/08/2024 19:15

Well someone has to say this. Babies don't have a gender so you can't scan it.
It's the sex you are looking for.

justfornow1 · 01/08/2024 19:17

I didn't really want to find out but my DH is a radiographer (not a sonographer) so we thought he'd probably be able to tell.

It was very apparent it was a boy though, without any training! Usually only wrong the other way round, but you never know!

TheDogIsInCharge · 01/08/2024 19:19

I was told I was having a girl at 20 week scan. My mum bought baby girl clothes and planned, I didn't, I just didn't feel right about it. I had another scan due to a low lying placenta at around 35 weeks. I asked if they could confirm if it was a girl and she said "ummm absolutely not" and then showed me a very clear willy!

Consequently when I was told my second was a girl at the 20w scan I didn't rely on that and had a selection of names ready.

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 01/08/2024 19:25

I know/know of 3 people where the first scan suggested the wrong sex (one a friend, one anecdotally, and a stranger who told me themselves when we were chatting). All were told girl and went on to have boys.

MigGril · 01/08/2024 19:28

I worked with a guy who had been told his wife was having a girl they bought all girl things. She gave birth to a boy.

We didn't find out with our first, when I asked with our second I was tentatively told a boy but she didn't seem sure so I did rush out and buy stuff. He did turn out to be a boy though.

PedantScorner · 01/08/2024 19:33

It'll be too early to know whether the baby will identify as male or female.

Sounds that way.

SallyWD · 01/08/2024 19:49

It does sound like you're hoping for a girl. My sonographer told me the vast majority of the times they think it's a boy, it is a boy.
Little boys are lovely by the way.

I’m blessed already to have a girl (and a boy!) but I’ve never found out before so it has me wondering how accurate private gender scans are without confirming at 20wk NHS scan

Highly unlikely to be wrong op, no matter how many 'we got told x but it was x' anecdotes you hear.

You get what you get.

Haha… I think I’ve id seen “something” on the screen that day I wouldn’t have this doubt… I was more focussed on the placenta being anterior because I wasn’t getting any movement x

My cousins best friend was told she was having a girl. Bought all pink , even the buggy and she had a boy. So it can happen

Yeah I have this weird niggling feeling of doubt… I’ve already got both girl & boy so this just “feels” like a girl pregnancy but I’ve been told boy at that scan… I actually quite like the mystery around it! Did your second turn out to be a girl?! I hope you kept all that stuff if so 💕🤣

Yeah I’m not buying a thing - I already have pink & blue from my others anyway so will get the white ready & add the colour in when they arrive 🩵🩷

What?! I didn’t ask what my baby will identify as, I asked has anyone been told one sex at scan & baby born the other!!!

How does it sound that way? You’re being very presumptuous…
