Can gender scan be wrong??

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone has found out the sex of their baby during a scan to then give birth to the opposite of what they were told?!

Background - I went for a private scan at 16/17wks & the girl spent a bit of time looking at measurements of the baby & explaining that the placenta was sitting at the front - she then told me, quite quickly, that the baby is a boy, however didn’t actually show me anything on the screen & the only images I was sent were of the baby’s head & feet. My husband doesn’t want to know what we’re having this time so I didn’t get it confirmed at my 20wk anomaly scan so I’m now 26wks and wondering “was she right?!”

Am I having a boy or could I infact give birth to a girl?! I feel like I still have a bit of wonder which is nice I guess…. 🩵🩷 all stories appreciated xx

I’ve always said this “you get what you’re given” & I’ve never found out before… guess that’s why I’m left with a bit more wonder this time x

"A Karen"? Nice bit of ageism and sexism there.

There's nothing nice about ageism or sexism.

Could you ask them at next scan?

WitchesCauldron · 01/08/2024 20:24

I was told that they can only definitely sex a boy e.g absence of willy they assume is a girl- maybe that's why some girls turn out to be boys..

In any case I chose not to find out with either- very few real surprises in life and gender reveals are GHASTLY ducks for cover

curlysue1991 · 01/08/2024 20:36

I was told at 16 weeks I was having a boy, a girl at 20 weeks but couldn't confirm it, so basically went the rest of the pregnancy not knowing, but they were a girl 😂

underhedges · 01/08/2024 20:37

I know someone who was told she was pregnant with twin boys. She was in shock when two girls came out 😅. It took a number of weeks to choose different names.

As long as my husband isn’t there!!

This is a surprise 4th so the reason why I wanted to know, felt like I had enough of a surprise for this year… but my husband says exact same as you, so I’ve not told anyone else… I agree with gender reveals too, not my thing!

Thank you for sharing, it goes to show “they never get a boy wrong” that infact they do. Good for you just waiting right till the end, I know I could run for another private scan tomorrow but by this stage, I’m happy to just wait & keep that wee element of mystery 🩵🩷 love hearing all the different experiences! X

No way!!! That would be a shocker with 2… it really shows you it’s not certain till they’re actually born xx

Well someone has to say this. Babies don't have a gender so you can't scan it.
It's the sex you are looking for.

Absolutely.

RubyQueen23 · 01/08/2024 21:11

sanityisamyth · 01/08/2024 21:06

Absolutely.

It’s not me that names them “gender scans” and if you actually read the post you’ll see I referred to the “sex” of the baby. Thanks for input though!

We were told that generally if you're told it's a boy, it is very likely right. If you're told it's girl there's a chance it might be wrong. Basically tiny boy genitalia can hide, there's nothing on a girl that can create boy's bits look-a-likes!

Choochoo21 · 01/08/2024 21:21

Most people call them gender scans, gender reveals etc we all know what you mean but some people like to be difficult.

It sounds like you really want to know the sex and so perhaps you could get another scan to clarify (your DH could step outside of the room if he doesn’t want to know).

I’ve always said I would love to keep the sex a complete secret until birth but I know I don’t have the patience for that and if I got pregnant I would have to find out!

Surely a mother of (almost) 3 should be over the misogynistic use of Karen by now? Grow up

I already have 3, thanks… I don’t get why people come on to posts to share no experience of the question(s) asked, just merely to make a point about someone using the “incorrect” terminology. I think people like that should grow up & comment/answer to be helpful, not to show off and act like they are better than others! Pathetic really…

Thank you… this makes sense… yeah at the time I didn’t even question it / think twice, it’s just in the last few weeks the wonder has crept in!x

I’m going to just keep going now & wait and see… from what most have said here it’s most likely to be a boy but I guess there’s stories out there that show it’s not 100%!

I didnt find out with my other 3 and if you can have the patience, it really is the best surprise in the world 🥰

And yes thank you, it’s common terms used… I can’t believe people go out their way to comment on posts just to be difficult/awkward; it’s bizarre!

How does it sound that way? You’re being very presumptuous…

She's not being presumptuous. You couldn't be making it more obvious.

Sorry to tell you, but you're getting a boy. As pp said, boys can hide their bits and get wrongly presumed a girl.... But if they've said boy, they've seen the penis. Which a girl can't do. And at 17 wks they're not mistaken.

Sorry to tell me? Why are you sorry? I will be delighted to have another baby to love. I’ve never found out the gender before, hence my curiosity on how accurate private scans are.

Are the above posters who have told me their stories of being told a boy then had a girl, in one case twins, lying then?!

Both of my boys I could quite clearly see their bits on the early private scan, likewise on subsequent hospital scans. Not getting a private scan this time around going to hang on in there and wait til the 20 week scan! I wouldn't ever go all out and paint an entire room pink or blue before baby born just in case though, I've only ever bought a few clothes, I've always kept it in the back of my mind that until baby is out all bets are off!!

Aww that’s exciting for you… do you think you could even wait right till the end?! Part of me thinks I should have again but as the pregnancy was a surprise, I decided just to find out. I also thought I’d go full steam ahead with organising but I totally haven't (just incase!) & I already have blue or pink in so no need to buy anything. Good luck for 3 when it comes, it’s madness 🤣 xx

What a shock. You're hanging on to the alleged exception rather than the overwhelming rule.
