When does the nausea stop? (Light-hearted...kind of!)

That's it! I have had just about enough 😂 😭 8+4 and I know I have had it way luckier than some.

I've only physically been sick once, have come very close (eg. dry heaves) a bunch more times but oh my gosh the nausea. I actually prefer the times I've almost thrown up or actually did (yesterday). I'm also on holiday right now which we have done our best to make the most of despite the ridiculous nausea and food aversions.

DH has been setting a timer every 2 hours so I can eat something small like a cracker or banana to try and put off the nausea (works some of the time), and I'm off a lot of food. I'm also being more careful with what I consume being abroad and obv with what's allowed in pregnancy anyway. Food feels stressful atm like something I really don't want but have to make sure I eat something regularly or I'll feel like death! Is this practice for having a baby on a schedule/picky toddler 😂

DH has been great as usual though we had a moment yesterday after I asked him to go get me a coke after I'd been sick and when he brought it he suggested I find a new nausea drink because of the caffeine in it 😩💀 that was swiftly shut down!

Anyway I was hoping for 12w to be the magical end to all things nausea but have seen online it can keep going well into the second trimester 😭 tell me that's not true??? How do people do this I swear.

Fore 6-10 weeks was bad nausea then it went away, but everyone seems to be different!

That sounds optimistic! I've been thinking how do I cope with another month let alone more! The nausea is awful isn't it.

Mine stopped overnight at 9 weeks, before then, I would fancy something to eat, eat it & within 20 minutes be sat on the toilet with my head in a bucket.

paristotokyo · 22/07/2024 02:38

Both times 12 weeks. First one drinking sprite was the only thing that helped but it was a life saver as it really worked. Was like an off button for the nausea. Second time the sprite worked, but not as well. I used those nausea armbands which took the edge off I believe but mainly just had to get through it. Good luck!

Samiibaby · 22/07/2024 02:49

Oh gosh poor OP you have my sympathy
I'm going through this EXACT same thing so your not alone
Nausea, vomiting and major food aversions
Today I threw up at the sight of my toddler eating his breakfast the poor thing was only having some pancakes and I took one look and sprinted to the bathroom
I'm 10 + 5 weeks today and I feel absolutely rotten 😭

Devilsmommy · 22/07/2024 04:15

Really hope it doesn't happen to you but my whole pregnancy was like this 😭 and it was even worse when the heartburn kicked in😳

PumpkinSoup21 · 22/07/2024 04:36

I’m one of those for whom it goes on. First time I just soldiered on and it stopped at 20 weeks (and then came back close to birth). Second time I felt more empowered around the whole thing and went to the doctor early doors when it was clear it was the same experience. Had to push a bit for antiemetics but once I got them it did help a lot (though didn’t completely solve it). Citrus fruit was my craving and the juice from a tin of mandarin slices was the only thing I could stomach for a while!
If it continues then ask for help. You don’t have to suffer endlessly just because you are pregnant.

Mmmmpavlova · 22/07/2024 04:38

It's so variable OP, and it's crap isn't it!

Mine went on for all of pregnancy (I was actively vomiting all that time also despite being on anti emetic medication) but it did improve by 20ish weeks.
Second pregnancy, it was mild to moderate at first, then got intolerable at 13 to 18 weeks, then mild and intermittent after (although i wouldn't say gone!).

But I know many people who had it far worse than me, and many who had it far easier. If you find it hard to cope, look up the pregnancy sickness support (PSS) website.

Gemmy96 · 22/07/2024 04:39

Mine didn't. The good news: there's some incredibly effective medication and if your GP is funny about prescribing it, insist

littleoldme3 · 22/07/2024 04:43

Hopefully it doesn’t last long for you @ridl14 🤞🏼 I was sick every day until about 17 weeks but I know lots of people who has severe nausea that disappeared almost overnight at 10/12ish weeks.

I was always sick in the evenings. I used to sit and cry eating my dinner because I knew I was going to throw it back up in 5 minutes and I really hate being sick 😂 it was quite a time 😂

Tofu35 · 22/07/2024 04:54

I have strong memories of crying to my husband at 15 weeks because I was still feeling nauseous (never sick, only retching). I declared all the information I had read about first trimester was a lie. It stopped around 16 weeks and was replaced with a ravenous hunger, food never tasted so good (after having so many aversions in the first few months). Think I always carried a pack of lemon and lime starburst, chewing gum and belvita oat biscuits because they stopped the retching for a few minutes

It's tough but temporary. The nausea will stop!

Incakewetrust · 22/07/2024 05:03

I had hyperemesis with my first so from 7-34 weeks with a couple of weeks break in the middle.
With my second, incredible I didn't get it again and only had nausea until around 12/13 weeks.

Things I found helped though:

  • get DH to bring you a piece of toast every morning before you even sit up in bed. It helps to have something in your stomach before you start moving around.
  • travel sickness bands
  • iced water

Thank you! It is so horrible. I appreciate some encouragement to get some kind of help for it! I know it could be way worse though I'm not sure if mine is ramping up atm.

We just went out for dinner at this beautiful restaurant, really excellent food. I split some gnocchi with DH, had most of a really nice mocktail that basically felt like a smoothie, had a few bites of rice then went to the restaurant bathroom to throw it all up 😖 I'm just accepting I won't be eating proper meals for potentially the rest of our time here and probably back in the UK until it passes either. I told DH this evening he could be the pregnant one next time!

Hyperemis you poor thing 💐 thank you for the practical advice! I've tried ginger lozenges but not travel sickness bands, that's great

29 weeks and still going strong here! Promethazine, cyclizine (not at same time!) and omeprazole are my new holy trinity. It gets worse when I’m hungry or tired so using it as a good excuse to nap and have to keep digestives by the bed for a middle of the night snack 😳😂

Garman · 22/07/2024 06:22

My first and third pregnancies it lasted until the day after they were born, coupled with horrific heartburn from about 20 weeks too. Gp wouldn’t prescribe anything but also at the time the medication for it was incredibly expensive where I am and I kept hoping it would stop so I kept not fighting to get it!

littleoldme3 · 22/07/2024 07:05

@ridl14 It’s definitely unpredictable unfortunately 🥲 It’s all worth it in the end, I promise 😂

It could also be worth having a think about any potential triggers. Mine just seemed to be evenings in general, and particularly about 5-8pm. But my best friend realised that anything with dairy was a huge trigger for her. Once she switched to alternatives she was so much better.

Hopefully you’ll find something that works to keep it at bay. Mine was ice poles 😂 I ate one every single day after dinner and it curbed the nausea 😂 problem was they came in boxes of like 20 and I could only stomach 2 flavours so by the end of my pregnancy I had a freezer drawer piled with all the other flavours that I couldn’t even look at 😂😂

hopefulmum46 · 22/07/2024 07:16

It was about 23 weeks for me, managed to wean myself off the anti nausea meds at about 25 weeks. As awful as it was at the time, I then really enjoyed the third trimester. Hope you feel better soon🤞

pinkg34 · 22/07/2024 07:27

16 weeks for me both times was the magic number. With my first I was SO nauseated 24/7 from 5-16 weeks. It was so rough, massive sympathy!!

Strugglebus86 · 22/07/2024 12:41

I'm 12 weeks and struggling HARD I've got hyperemesis - it's my 3rd pregnancy and usually goes around 20 weeks.
Not sure I've got another 2 months of this in me tbh!

Foxtrotbeta · 22/07/2024 13:57

I'm 30 weeks with hyperemesis and still extremely nauseous. The vomitting is controlled by medication but I start being sick again very quickly if I stop taking it. I have the odd day where I feel OK (no good days, just OK) but many more terrible days.

UnravellingTheWorld · 22/07/2024 20:14

I remember it lasting until about 19 weeks with my first. I didn't have morning sickness, but neverending sickness 🤢 Constant nausea and could barely eat a thing. Went off two of our staple dinners and honestly I still can't eat them nearly 4 years later!

Second pregnancy has had zero nausea, so it might not happen again if you have another one!
