Am I being overly sensitive to comment midwife made about my body?

Just had my 31 week midwife appointment but my midwife was off ill so I saw a lady I haven't seen before.

We were discussing how baby is measuring big so I'm having extra scans, she said she doesn't know where I'm putting it as bump isn't that big but then she asked where the big baby comes from and when I said I'm not sure as I wasn't a big baby, she said "well you're not a small girl, are you?"

I don't know if I'm being overly sensitive as I'm hormonal and had a tough few weeks but it just really quite hurt. I'm 5'4 so not massively tall, a size 8 and I've always been fairly small framed and, like I say, my bump isn't even big but it's just made me feel really crap about my body. I know I shouldn't care about my body now that I'm going to be a mum anyway but it just stung a bit

The measurements aren’t the most accurate anyway, all the way through I was told I was measuring small and baby was predicted to be between 6-7lb, he was 8lb 11 when born 2 days after due date!

People really shouldn’t comment on other peoples bodies. Slim, big, tall, short-just no.

Yes, I think this is widely accepted. A lot of health measurements give indications/risks of certain things, but are a non-invasive way to then show if more invasive tests are needed.

She may have thought you were worried about giving birth to a large baby and was trying to say you're not very small so it shouldn't be a problem.

Many people will say mad things to you now you're a mum, best to brush it off.
You'd be a tiny weeny person in our family - I'm the smallest at 5 foot 10 and size 16.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Any unsolicited remark about size, weight, height, appearance (to you, or in relation to your nearest and dearest) is out of order in my book.

When I was 5cm dilated and just on my way to labour ward, I commented that I would like to have baby stood up, lovely midwife said to me 'oh I'm sorry love, I'm not sure that will be possible, you've been blessed with tree trunk thighs like me!!' I can't actually remember how I felt at the time but I obviously felt some kind of way to remember this after 16 years. 🤣

Size 8? Insane

Demelzatheredhaired · 22/07/2024 14:57

Maybe she’s thinking in terms of bones OP.
You can be a size 8 at 5’4 and still have a decently wide pelvis that will let a large baby through. It’s not even really a question of ´frame’ as measured by how thick your wrist bones are or how small your waist is. It’s the space inside your pelvis that makes a difference to giving birth and maybe she can tell from your body shape that you’re likely to be ok.
I’m a similar size to you and gave birth to a 9lb 5 baby with no great issue. Turns out my family history is littered with large newborns and average height, slim mothers.

How unprofessional. Also she is missing the point. I had gestational diabetes which was diagnosed late. This caused my son to be born very big and I had to be induced soon after the diagnosis. She should be considering why he is so big. Perhaps ask what might be causing him to be big. I wish my gestational diabetes had been picked up sooner. Once my son was born he soon found his gown growth line and was not in fact a large toddler or child.
