Disposable Knickers?

MummaHenDo · 10/07/2024 22:56

What are the best disposable Knickers to get for after birth?
I was originally just going to use my old underwear with maternity pads but keep seeing these on all of the hospital bag check lists, so thought they may be handy to double up over or under Knickers for extra protection as I can't imagine they are hugely absorbant on their own.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, though I don't want to spend huge amounts of money on something I'm essentially going to throw away after a couple of hours use.

I bought black cotton ones instead and found them much better. The disposable ones are not comfortable.

I bought some on Vinted but not sure what make they are however I was in Primark the other day and they sell period knickers which are leak proof and washable etc. I was tempted to give them a go with a pad

Alwaystired2023 · 10/07/2024 23:01

I didn't buy disposable knickers either time, 4 years ago and a week ago, seemed v wasteful. Just bought a size or two larger cotton pants which I can wear again, put away for future / bloated times etc etc

Alwaystired2023 · 10/07/2024 23:01

Would be worried period pants too 'strong' for this use? Cotton pants thin and soft maybe best ?

AbraAbraCadabra · 10/07/2024 23:10

Don't the hospital supply these any more?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/07/2024 23:12

I don't think period pants would be absorbent enough. Post partum bleeding is much heavier in my experience. I think they might be a bit tight too, particularly on the gusset, where you'll probably be a bit tender.

Big multipack of big black cotton knicks is what you need.

MummaHenDo · 10/07/2024 23:13

I have already bought some primark black high waisted full brief style knickers which I had planned to use with my standard old ones already in my underwear drawer. I also already have period pants but assumed they will be too thick paired with a maternity pad which I can't imagine would be very breathable for my bits lol.
I just wasn't sure if these disposable pants are an essential or not as they are on all the lists I'm going over to check I've got everything before packing my bag. I suppose if it makes life easier then I'd like to get my moneys worth but if not I don't mind washing abit of blood out of standard pants, it's nothing new for us ladies lol.

I bought some with my first as they were on the list the hospital provided.
They were rustly and a bit sweaty.
Subsequent births I opted for big M&S pants a few sizes up with the maternity brick pad things in and the proper knickers were a lot more comfortable.
I’d advice just sizing up in regular cottony knickers instead of the disposables.
I don’t think period pants would have nearly enough absorbency based on my experience but obviously everyone will have different levels of blood loss. I haven’t used them before but I would imagine they may be a bit too ‘tight’ on your general abdomen area but again I may be wrong!

I had loads of different types I personally didn't like them, what I found the best were pull up incontinence pads and stick a maternity pad inside - this is optional you could just use the pull up, they're cheap and comfy and never felt like I was going to leak through

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 10/07/2024 23:15

I think the ones by Frida on Amazon are really well rated.

TheChosenTwo · 10/07/2024 23:16

Just saw your update, I wouldn’t bother with the disposables. You can either bin the knickers (I know it’s not an environmentally great choice and I never needed to throw mine in the bin) or just chuck them in the wash but if you’re anything like me I wore mine for a good few weeks post partum before they were too baggy so did get some wear out of them.

countrypunk · 10/07/2024 23:17

The Frida Mom pants are amazing, I wore them for about 3 weeks after giving birth, with pads. Very comfortable!

Angrymum22 · 10/07/2024 23:19

M&S big knickers with a wide gusset. If you end up with a C Section anything below the waterline can irritate the scar.

Floralsofa · 10/07/2024 23:20

I bought cheap Asda black full knickers and put maternity pads in, never had an issue with leaking either time.

TheSmallAssassin · 10/07/2024 23:21

I didn't use them when I had my two, they are definitely not essential (and I can't really see why they would be desirable either!)

rlbjsf · 10/07/2024 23:54

Assuming vaginal birth, you're probably gonna be pretty raw down there so I would say comfort is the most important.
I had an episiotomy and managed to rip my stitches out twice, disposables were just too uncomfortable for me, tried both always boutique and tesco own brand.
Comfiest for me was tesco maternity pads and my cotton maternity knickers, I had heavy bleeding and no leaks at all.
May be TMI but if you do end up with stitches, I highly recommend laying a puppy training pad down on the bed and sleeping pant-less to get some air down there, really helped my recovery. Puppy pads were also great in the car on the way to hospital as my waters had gone 🙈

Agreed

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 11/07/2024 00:05

Tena silhouette are a game changer. Disposable, comfy and all in one so you don't need to worry about extra pads etc.

Nat6999 · 11/07/2024 00:07

Buy disposable incontinence pants for the first few weeks until your bleeding settles down, nothing worse than a pad sliding around, coming unstuck & never being where you need it.

Sarahwychftm · 11/07/2024 01:01

I had the frida mom shorts and they were so comfy! Super stretchy, the material feels weird when they aren't on but I found them really comfortable and breathable. I wore them for a while after the birth until I had none left and was sad when I had finished them and had to go back to m&S full brief massive pants!

Boltonb · 11/07/2024 01:03

There is nothing more depressing than sitting in a hospital bed bleeding into rustly, scratchy disposable underwear!

I am a size 14, and I bought size 20 black cotton briefs to wear, with maternity pads. I wouldn’t recommend disposable pants at all.

annlee3817 · 11/07/2024 01:28

I had the cheap Primark ones with my first and didn't like them. For my second I had the FRIDA mum postpartum disposable pants and they were so much better. Breathable and extremely comfortable.

MixedCouple2 · 11/07/2024 01:38

I get vouchers yearly from Always for Incontinence pants 😂 you beat know I been going and collecring my free pack every time. I use those with a large maternity pad inside. I don't have to change it each time unless leakage. Last time I managed to keep the same pair on for 12 hours before throwing away and after a week I didn't need to change it as often and they were sooooooo confortable and reassuring especially laying down and sleeping! I always reccomend to Mamas to be to get a pack at least for the first few days/week

My midwife reccomemded nuraing pantless with a puppy oad underneath to allow things to breath and dry out. Whoch I did twice a day. I tries to conincide it after I used the bathroom and sorayed my Expert midwife spray and then nursed and rested with baby for an hour before popping back on clothes.

LizzeyBenett · 11/07/2024 02:16

I used the Frida mum shorts and they were amazing

Butterflysunshine01 · 11/07/2024 04:29

Frida shorts are so comfortable definitely worth it
