Disposable Knickers?

MummaHenDo · 10/07/2024 22:56

What are the best disposable Knickers to get for after birth?
I was originally just going to use my old underwear with maternity pads but keep seeing these on all of the hospital bag check lists, so thought they may be handy to double up over or under Knickers for extra protection as I can't imagine they are hugely absorbant on their own.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, though I don't want to spend huge amounts of money on something I'm essentially going to throw away after a couple of hours use.

Always discreet underwear

I bought black cotton ones instead and found them much better. The disposable ones are not comfortable.

Same, big cotton high waisted ones from Amazon, with a pad inside. So much more comfortable.

I just used Superdrug's own brand of absorbant disposable underwear. I would have just gone with normal maternity towels but my waters broke a week earlier (pre-term) so I was using them anyway due to leaking lots of fluid constantly and they were just leftover. My PP bleeding was not very heavy though.

Don't the hospital supply these any more?

It was certainly never mentioned to me when I gave birth 2 and 5 years ago.

I just took some big knickers.

sarahc336 · 11/07/2024 06:14

Don't buy them they're not comfy. Buy yourself some really nice and comfy massive knickers. I'm talking the ones that come up to your belly button, trust me 😂😂 you want big knickers for holding the maternity pads in place plus the bigger the knicker the more it'll feel it kinda holds your wobbly belly in place and also less irritating if you have a c section and a scar. Post birth you want to be as comfy as possible 😁

maryberryslayers · 11/07/2024 06:23

Boots ones are brilliant. Just get 2 sizes bigger than normal.

I liked them, particularly for the hospital and early days, as you can just throw the whole lot away and there's no mess or washing,

MummaHenDo · 11/07/2024 10:01

Thanks everyone, I think I'm getting the general consensus is that they aren't essential but if I do pick some up to go for the knicker type incontinence/short type pants rather than the hospital grade mesh style. So I will have a look but not going to panic about not having any if the price is ridiculous anyways.

You would think that hospitals would provide a sort of starter pack that included a couple of mat & bed pads, knickers, etc but my midwife said they (maybe just my local hospital) stopped doing that years ago and are even very strict in giving you anything if you run out of your own supply now.

I’ve got the Frida mom shorts for post c-section. Looks like you still add a maternity pad to them though, which maybe defeats the point a bit?! But they are often recommended for c-sections so I’ve bought a box anyway. I’ll also head to M&S or Primark for some black high-waisted full brief type knickers. I usually get a size 10 but I think I will go for a size 16. Hopefully they won’t be too big and fall down haha. Nothing worse than underwear that won’t stay up!

I have read that using reusable period pants should be avoided as you can’t track the blood loss well enough in those.

westcountrywoman · 11/07/2024 10:12

Cheap pack of black granny pants from Primark in a size bigger than your usual size. Much more comfy than scratchy disposables.

Handletoe · 11/07/2024 10:16

I got some from Amazon, they were very comfortable after an EMCS as they sat high and were loose around the dressing site. Wore them for about 3 weeks. Would definitely recommend.

CheeseWisely · 11/07/2024 10:21

I'm 5 weeks post partum and never bought any disposable knickers. I bought a couple of cheap packs of 5 pairs of big cotton 'granny' pants, one in 2 sizes bigger than I'd wear pre-pregnancy and one in 1 size bigger. They've been absolutely fine and I'm still wearing them daily now.

The first 2 days after giving birth I did 'double pad' with two maternity pads just for reassurance but since then have been fine with one pad (and now down to normal pantyliners, just the long ones).

SPsmama · 11/07/2024 10:41

I loved the always discreet incontinence pants for pp, I find them quite comfortable and as they are designed for urine, they keep things dry

MummaHenDo · 11/07/2024 12:40

Can I just double check, Is the sizing up so the underwear is comfortable with the pad in or for another reason?

I bought a pack of tena lady incontinence pants for the first day or two - I would highly recommend. Very comfy and also useful in case you have any urine incontinence issues immediately after birth. I then used large black pants with maternity pads. I think the large pant size is too make sure they aren't tight (might press on stitches etc) and also room for pads I guess. I found the bleeding torrential for the first 12 hours or so (big floods whenever I stood up), and then it became more manageable.

InfoSecInTheCity · 11/07/2024 12:50

Disposable are not essential at all.

Same as other i bought cheap black full briefs and used maternity pads.

Maternity pads are thicker and longer than sanitary towels, they are also unscented. I tried some Always night time pads which turned out to be a mistake because they wick moisture away which in theory sounds good, but when you have stitches from a 2nd degree tear drying out the skin is sore.

I also found that pouring some witch hazel on a maternity pad and freezing it felt really very nice and soothing on inflamed swollen bits.

Mainly because if you're buying the 'full briefs' or granny pants, then they pull up to belly button level and your belly will still be big after you give birth so you won't be down to pre-pregnancy size for a while.

Devilsmommy · 11/07/2024 12:54

Boots and Tesco both do good ones though Tesco seems to be hit and miss with if they're in stock.

Violetlightning · 11/07/2024 12:55

I used the Frida disposable knickers too. They're worth every penny from my experience. I used a standard postnatal pad in them, they adhered well.

Proce55ing · 11/07/2024 13:33

I bought a load of these because I’d seen them on the hospital bag check lists too.
my own black maternity underwear was much comfier and after wearing one pair (which you have to add a maternity towel to anyway) I just switched back to my own underwear. Not really sure of the point of them, unless all your underwear is pretty and you don’t want to ruin it. Also the hospital offered me disposable pants too, if you really needed them im sure they’d be happy to give you some.
mine are all still in the packaging anyway, waste of money.

statetrooperstacey · 11/07/2024 13:40

I’ve found them usefull for the first 24/48 hours then moved t large (very large) pants.
