Hi

Looking for a bit of help if possible,
I am 2 weeks away from my due date, I am a first time mum who's having a baby girl and has been breech for most of my pregnancy (prepared myself that I would need a c section) Until the other day when I had a scan and she had turned head down and then my Since then I have had mixed feelings as my midwife wants me to be induced now. I think I would have rather have had a c section as I've heard loads of horrible stories about being induced and I really don't want to go overdue!

Just looking for a bit of advice really please

What does she want you be induced? Have you seen the consultant?

This is really good to help you ask the right questions so you have all the info you need to make a decision.

When a new choice is offered to you, some good questions to ask are:

  • What are the BENEFITS of this decision?
  • What are the RISKS of this decision?
  • Are there any ALTERNATIVES?
  • What does my INTUITION say?
  • What happens NEXT? What happens if I do NOTHING?
If that seems like a lot, just remember B.R.A.I.N!

They've said her belly is measuring bigger than it was on my last scan and they don't want it to get bigger!

I wouldn't do it if I was you but it's your choice. I was talked into an induction at 38 weeks and it failed coz my baby wasn't ready...wasn't even engaged...ended up with a c section which I really didn't want!!! They told me she was too big that's why they wanted to induce me.

Was she a big baby in the end?
Did you have an emergency c section?

Kellyaust · 13/06/2024 16:32

It was decided on the night I'd have a section the next morning after 2 days full on contractions with no cervix change, so not emergency but still something I never wanted to have. She was 8lb3oz and was 2 weeks early x

NotAllowed · 13/06/2024 16:32

If your baby is head down and now in the correct position I would avoid being induced and avoid an elective caesarean. Baby will come when baby is ready and you will be able to birth her.

Bumblebee2002 · 13/06/2024 16:34

I was talked into being induced and I regret it because I found the induced contractions that went from 0-100 in minutes a lot harder than if it had progressed naturally. If I could choose again I'd say no to the induction and wait till baby came on his own.

They want to induce me on my
actual due day I didn't know if it would mean it would be easier? As I know some people get induced 2 weeks before their due date

You don’t have to be induced if you don’t want to.

You can ask for a rescan for a second opinion because measurements can be off at this stage and you are basing this decision off one scan. Late stage measurements can be off ( baby not in good position ect..) and dependant on if the sonographer got it wrong - which happens. ( I work with in maternity it happens)

Also please don’t worry about C-Sections. When planned they go very smoothly and it’s a can be a relaxed experience - Yes there is recovery time but so do vaginal births. I’ve had both.

I have really bad anxiety and really wouldn't want to go overdue! I think I've left it a bit late now to ask for a c section!

It's definitely not too late to ask for a section, I asked for one when I was in labour! I personally would not be induced, if your body isn't ready it'll likely end in an intervention such as a section anyway. Personally I'd ask for a section date close to my due date, but ask now!

Okay I didn't know you can ask for one, I didn't think they liked giving them out! I've got a Sweep on Tuesday so I was going to wait to see if anything happens first, I just really don't want to go overdue as I will start to panic that something will happen

OP posts:
bravotango · 13/06/2024 17:14

I totally understand that feeling - the sweep might get things going! Speak to your midwife about booking a section if you really want one. FWIW I was also scared of going over, so had a sweep at 39+3 and booked a section for 40+4. Ended up going into labour the night before my due date and asked for a section 12 hours later, all's well that ends well! Be really honest about your feelings with your midwife and see what she says ❤️

I went over due with two of mine.

  • 1st was one week over due and just gas and air 7,6lb - vaginal birth
  • 2nd was over due a week, emergency section due to failure to progress, 10lb 🙈 ( I think she was too big for my tuppance 😅)
  • 3rd one week early went in to Labour but still failed to progress so they put me in for a c-section and it was fine.

Contact your midwife and ask for a second opinion regarding the scan because inductions are bloody painful and sometimes don’t work and you’re basing your decision of that.

Talk to her about that you would still like to go ahead with the section as it’s giving you anxiety

Most babies don’t come on their due date either x

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 13/06/2024 17:25

I don't know why they've started offering inductions out now to anyone and everyone for the most minor things.

Personally I wouldn't ask for a section or an induction if I had no medical reason to do so that was not putting myself or my baby at risk

If you have an induction before your baby is ready to come, statistically it is much more likely to end up with intervention or emergency c section

Okay I might question it on Tuesday then, what was the recovery like?

It's really hard because like I've said in previous messages above I do struggle with my anxiety and the fact of me going over due really scares me because things can happen and of course things can happen whenever throughout your pregnancy I know that!
But they are much bigger at full term and I am just scared something bad is going to happen

My recovery was fine, the important thing is to get up and moving as soon as you can, and be really good at taking your pain medication. But (your midwife will also say this!) remember it's a really big surgery, and a low risk vaginal birth would likely have a more straightforward recovery. Saying that, I'm pregnant again and I'm going to go for an elective section this time so it's really whatever you think will be the right birth for you!

Chelseaaaaa · 13/06/2024 18:59

@bravotango

I think what scares me is the unknown and how long my labour would last or if something goes wrong I'll have to have an emergency surgery, I've been fine all this pregnancy up until now that I am 2 weeks away giving birth. Congratulations btw how exciting xx

Does anyone know what happens if you do go 2 weeks over due? Do they give you a choice to have a c section or induce you?

OP posts:
bravotango · 13/06/2024 19:17

Aw of course, it's really normal to feel apprehensive! Have you done any hypnobirthing at all? With regards to choices once you're overdue - they can't force you to do anything you don't want to. They will explain the risks but ultimately it's your decision. My advice is to read up on your options/different types of births, speak to your midwife about your specific circumstances and try to relax as best as you can! You'll be great 👍

You always have a choice. My DC2 was not born until 41+4 so not quite two weeks overdue but not that far off. Spontaneous labour, ended in ventouse delivery. DC1 was spontaneous labour on their due date, also ventouse delivery.

mummabear1992xx · 13/06/2024 19:24

I was induced woth all of mine and it's not to bad your contraction are just more intestense as long as they don't give you the drip to help your contraction you will be fine I had that drip and it was constant bad contractions for 3 hours congratulations and good luck you will be fine

Notellinganyone · 13/06/2024 19:28

I went 2 weeks overdue plus four days. Nothing happened. Birth was fine. Inductions are happening far too often without judging each pregnancy on a case by case basis.

Chelseaaaaa · 13/06/2024 19:28

@WhyamInotvomiting

Is ventouse delivery like forceps?
