Ate unpasteurised tortellini 😭

Hi everyone!

Just hoping for some reassurance as I’m stressing

I ate the Rana brand tortellini tonight, bought from Asda. I boiled it for 2.5 mins as instructions said, then it was put under the grill for 5 mins.

I’m so annoyed at myself. I checked the ingredients afterwards and it had ricotta in it and mozarella that just said MILK, it didn’t say pasteurised

Do I need to stop worrying because it was heated up?
First time mumma here and an over worrier 😩

If it just says milk it will be pasteurised, it only has to be labelled if unpasteurised. But you cooked it anyway so it’s fine. Nothing about this meal is a problem

maxelly · 05/06/2024 20:34

You'll be completely fine, it's not that unpasteurised cheese is suddenly poisonous to pregnant women or babies in the womb, it's just that the (already very small) risk of catching a food poisoning bug could have more serious consequences in pregnancy. But by thoroughly cooking the pasta you will have killed off any bugs that remain, so no risk at all really. Eat and enjoy!

UpUpUpU · 05/06/2024 20:36

What do you think might happen OP?

Toastiecroissant · 05/06/2024 20:38

It was cooked. It’s fine.
Pasteurising kills germs. So does cooking
i imagine it was pasteurised though as well

NormalAuntFanny · 05/06/2024 20:59

There's no way it's not pasteurised, it's generally a selling point for better cheeses etc not something slipped in unremarked.

Even if it wasn't it sounds like you cooked the life out of it anyway so no danger :-)

RisingMist · 05/06/2024 21:01

I wouldn't worry about this at all. The cheese was probably pasteurised anyway (most is), and in any case you cooked it.

dementedpixie · 05/06/2024 21:12

It would have to say if it was unpasteurised. But you cooked it anyway and that would make it safe if it was unpasteurised to start with

@Oblomov24 I don’t appreciate your comment.
When you’re told not to eat unpasteurised cheeses as it can cause listeria which can harm the baby - and after having a previous miscarriage and caring about my baby, I really don’t appreciate your horrible comment.

As PP's have said its fine, and also most other foods that aren't allowed are fine if you cook them.

So sushi is fine with cooked fish, charcuterie is fine if cooked on pizza or in pasta dishes and baked cheese is fine too, so bring on the baked cambert if you are that way inclined!

I'm sorry about your previous miscarriage, it must be really difficult

Peonies12 · 06/06/2024 07:31

almost Certainly it was pasteurised and also it was cooked so it doesn’t matter anyway. And remember that advice is very over cautious. I’ve had a MC to, the vast majority are caused by chromosome issues which you can’t do anything about, so do please try and relax

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 06/06/2024 07:36

Please stop worrying. Can you imagine how underpopulated France and Italy would have become historically if wine and cheese were as harmful as all that? Sure, avoid in future but it's really not as though you've just snorted a fat line of coke.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 06/06/2024 07:38

Sorry, I missed that you had had a miscarriage. I'm so sorry for your loss, and apologise that my previous post seems flippant in that lights. Flowers

Are you this unpleasant in your real life interactions? Or do you just save that for the internet?

That’s harsh. She’s a first time mum who’s having a minor panic over something, and turned to mn for reassurance.

Op - hope you feel reassured this morning .

Probably shouldn’t have, but your post made me smile.

Roselilly36 · 06/06/2024 07:47

You will be fine OP, I can remember eating a Brie sandwich when I had just found out I was pregnant with DS1, just didn’t think, he’s 23 now and perfectly fine. Many congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

Even if you had a meal of shellfish, soft cheese and raw eggs (yuck!) washed down with half a lager, the chances are you will be absolutely fine. It's just a very slight increase in risk that you may as well try and avoid.

mycatisanarcissist · 06/06/2024 11:39

I'm sure it'll be fine. In other European countries, they eat soft cheeses during pregnancy.

I've eaten 2 raw egg yolks per day for several years and never had an issue. If I were pregnant, I'd still eat them.

NowyouhaveDunnett · 06/06/2024 11:42

I'm curious why you put tortellini under the grill?

If they are lion stamped they're OK to have raw or lightly cooked

They're not lion stamped but pasture raised, free to roam all day, and organic. Wouldn't do it with caged hen eggs though.
