need some natural remedies for now..

please don’t suggest honey as it apparently only works for next year!

can’t take antihistamines due to it not being recommended. I’ve also had losses so I am not one to risk anything.

other than locking myself in a windowless room.. what can I do 😭😵‍💫

I had this, it's miserable so I feel your pain. You could try that nasal rub, Haymax I think it's called. It doesn't do a lot but it might just help a little. Your GP might be able to prescribe something while you're pregnant.

Twinkletwinklelil · 12/05/2024 12:59

@GigiAnnna thank you, I’ll try that
ive been pregnant a few times and Hayfever has hit me bad each time but I could shut off and sleep it off but now I have a toddler it’s near impossible!! The GP won’t prescribe anything… no nasal spray, eye drops or antihistamines 😭

I used becanase nasal spray when pregnant. It's not "recommended" as nothing is during pregnancy as drug companies won't test on pregnant women. I did lots of research and found becanase was very low risk. The spray just goes in the nose so isn't absorbed into the blood stream.

Loratadine (clarytin) is also low risk but is absorbed more, so stick to the spray if this worries you.

Oldermum84 · 12/05/2024 13:05

And for what it's worth, my 5 month old has been prescribed becanase nasal spray for ongoing congestion, so it can't be that bad.

rosed1008 · 12/05/2024 13:09

The GP prescribed me a pregnancy safe antihistamine - it may have been a loratidine. They also gave me a steroid based nasal spray which helped massively.

I understand not wanting to take anything due to losses, I had 3 myself. Speak to your GP and they will help :)

sorry just seen you have spoken to your GP- they are talking crap can you speak to a different one?

LizzeyBenett · 12/05/2024 13:13

There are antihistamines that are safe to take in pregnancy speak to your GP

WetBandits · 12/05/2024 13:17

Loratadine is fine during pregnancy. Manufacturers will always warn against taking antihistamines during pregnancy as testing medication on pregnant women is unethical so there won’t be any studies to prove it is safe, but there is no current evidence to suggest that loratadine will harm your baby Smile

Have a chat with a pharmacist if you are worried!

bluecomputerscreen · 12/05/2024 13:20

wtf has told you 'there is nothing you can take'?

cetirizine and loratadine are both considered safe during pregnancy. both are available in the supermarket.

if that's not enough there are more options your midwife or gp could/should be able to advise you on.

bluecomputerscreen · 12/05/2024 13:21

the gp won't prescribe as most antihistamines are off the shelf freely available.

excitedmama2be · 12/05/2024 13:28

You can take certirizine and loradatine in pregnancy

the others - I take fenofexadine - they only have small sample groups to show it’s safe for pregnancy so those ones are more personal choice / informed decision

dementedpixie · 12/05/2024 14:12

Loratidine and cetirizine are ok and you can use corticosteroid sprays too.

alloverthewaves · 12/05/2024 14:22

Sounds like there are options for antihistamines but I'd also recommend doing nasal rinsing. You can get a bottle with the saline sachets off Amazon.

polkadotpixie · 12/05/2024 15:35

It's fine to take Loratadine during pregnancy. This is from the NHS website

Pregnancy made my hayfever the worst it ever was.

Definitely get some haymax.

And go back to the GP; they'll be something they can prescribe unlike something otc in the chemist.

While ago now but I definitely got prescribed nasal spray and worked a treat.

I didn’t ask for a prescription
I told them what I could get (cetrizine, loratadine, fexofenadine etc) and they said that I shouldn’t take any.

speak to the pharmacist or gp about nasal sprays they are topical and I think don't get into the blood stream therefore can’t reach your baby. I really struggled and used them with both pregnancies following discussion with my GP

bluecomputerscreen · 12/05/2024 19:39

that's ridiculous!

a gp really should know better.

twoandcooplease · 12/05/2024 19:47

I was allowed to take loratadine in my pregnancy. It got really really bad I couldn't suffer anymore. The gp was fine with it

pizzaHeart · 12/05/2024 19:49

I used loratadine. You could also use Saline spray as nasal spray.

AJMC1995 · 12/05/2024 22:04

I had a similar experience with my GP when I rang up to check what I could take for my severe hayfever. It has been hideous since I was a young child, always have been prescribed stronger antihistamines, eyedrops and nasal sprays and needed inhalers the past few summers too.

The GP I spoke to had no idea and had to ring me back the next day when she’d spoken to someone else- she just said “avoid it and don’t take it if you don’t need it, but if you really need to take it then take it”…. Not helpful at all!! I just can’t see how even eyedrops could be dangerous. It’s a horrible time!

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 12/05/2024 22:08

I don’t have advice about the antihistamines, but have you tried having a shower and washing your hair before bed every night? That’s one of the pieces of advice I have had and it has always really worked well for me.
