I had a growth scan today due to my tachycardia, at exactly 32 weeks today

she then asked have I had a gestational diabetes check before I went out and look t notes to see the weight I said no?
they didnt rebook a growth scan and I asked her 100 times if everything was ok she said its normal results?
so why did she ask about gestational diabetes?
is 4lb 11 big for 32 weeks> should I be concerned ?

Sorry to hear that @redddssak . The midwife thought I was measuring big (I was) and turned out I had GS which unfortunately became type 1 diabetes! Always good to do the tests as you never know - I had no symptoms other than being big (baby was 10lbs 4oz at birth at just under 37 weeks). He was long rather than chubby though. My second baby was chubby at birth.

yeah I really didnt want to do the test as everyone said how horrific it was, I actually had no problems, drinking the drink etc, but I was shocked too say the least im on day 3 now of my new diet and im so bored, im awaiting my information session but the nhs advise seems very dated, ive learnt more from the Facebook groups and so far apart from low morning readings (3.4) its been ok! hoping I can stay diet controlled
did u stay diet controlled? did u develop type one during pregnancy or after?

I was diagnosed with GD at 34 weeks, though only once had a high reading on the tests and didn't change my diet at all. I was told at 35+3 that baby was measuring 8lb 8oz already and was pressured into an induction as a result..

Baby was born 2 weeks ago at 38+1 at a perfect 7lb 15oz. I actually had a really positive induction and birth so no regrets, but definitely don't be scared to stand up and advocate for yourself like I was!

I was going to try just stay with my usual diet and see what I scored and then change from there but im too paranoid, Im 35 weeks now as of Monday 13th and so worried its been left too late to control but ive had no high numbers, highest one was 6.6 after dinner lowest being fasting ones like 3.4 only been testing since Thursday.

cingratulations! unfortunately, no one ever seems to mention good stories so thats great to hear as I just keep seeing bad stories about gd and being told to be induced earlier and increased risk of still birth has made me feel sick of worry, and more increased chance of pre ecmapsia too has scared me

I dont want to be pregnant till 40 weeks ill be very happy if she does at 37 weeks as I am so fed up now beyond fed up, I had no problems until now so feel like this easy pregnancy has been ruined and I now no longer want more children after this its totally put me off, especially as its more increased chance to have it next time too, there's no way. I can go through this again no way

I have an appointment today at the hospital im going to mention how anxious and depressed this diagnosis has made me as ive also been told nothing other than wait till ur virtual info session on Tuesday.. just useless information will be told I need to see like a diabetic midwife or something not on a zoom call telling me things I already know 💆
sorry for the rant lol

I had GD develop later on in my last pregnancy and managed to stay diet controlled.
I had an induction booked for my due date (obstetrician was happy with that cos my blood sugar readings and growth scans looked good) and then I went into labour naturally at 39+5 and delivered 39+6.

Having GD is totally a pain in the ass but not the end of the world if you can avoid needing insulin, and you get extra care during your delivery.
The important thing was I managed to keep sugars controlled enough that my baby delivered healthy.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/05/2024 06:43

I ended up being diagnosed around 30 weeks. Diet control didn't work so I ended up on insulin, which to be honest wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be.
I had the choice of c section at 38 weeks or induction at 37 weeks. Went with induction. Dd was 8lb 6 oz, they estimated she would have been at least 10lb at birth if I'd gone to term.
Diabetes vanished immediately dd was born and 17 years later I haven't developed diabetes yet.
We had to stay in hospital 3 days as dd was a little yellow and cold but now at 17yrs old she's a strapping 6ft tall young lady, no health issues.
I will say, dh is 6ft 6. We were never getting a small baby, I think they panicked a bit as I was 34.
It was in total a very positive birth experience.
All the best with your pregnancy and delivery.

Not commenting with advice but just to say I'm in a similar position, 30 week scan and baby measuring 4lb6oz. Everything over 90th percentile, head 74th. I didn't realise this in the scan and the consultant didn't flag any issues or need for any other scans, I only clocked the results when I read the report at home. May ring the midwife and try get a GD test. Hope all ok with the remainder of your pregnancy!

I would defiantly ask, its scary that I wasn't even going to get an extra scan but because of an unrelated issue todo with growth they did one and saw her just measuring a week ahead, the lady who done the scan didnt even say she was big, she just said everything is normal and have I had a gestational diabetes test. I saiid no and that was it,
it was only after I saw my midwife the next day and asked why she would ask that she looked at the scan and saw she was measuring a week ahead and weighs 4,11 already!
she said lets just book you in for one
as not knowing you have it is more dangerous than knowing even tho I am really struggling with adjusting I been crying all week since finding out

@redddssak sorry you're feeling down about it all ❤️ have your midwives been supportive? Like you say it's best to know if you have it and require any further support than to find out after the birth and be caught off guard. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well!

Stealthmodeactivated · 15/05/2024 14:45

I remained diet controlled throughout, after diagnoses around 26weeks I believe - my NHS trust routinely tests for anyone with certain risk factors including BMI, age, ethnicity (as some are more prone).

Didn’t really adjust my diet at all, numbers all fine aside from a 16.something which went down when I washed my hands! I did stop eating entire packets of biscuits and punnets of fruit though.

My numbers stabilised past 34 weeks and became very uniform and predictable, I was advised it can go ‘either way’ with some people being able to ‘tolerate’ more carbs etc and others less as it can be progressive.

The GDUK Facebook Group and website were amazing - look up ‘pairing foods’. I have actually stuck to this, to stabilise blood sugars in general. Stops sugar cravings!

Baby measured 40-50th percentile throughout (did have a larger abdominal circumference, but not massively), and has continued on that trajectory since birth. I only ended up putting on just shy of 6kg in total!

Flopsy145 · 15/05/2024 15:01

I just spoke to my midwife and she said they would offer me the test if he was over 100th percentile and that he's just a chunky baby. So I guess unless anything changes at my 36 week scan they won't test 🤷🏻‍♀️

just got the call a week ago, had a info session yesterday which was pretty useless to be truthful too much info took about an hour, not seeing the diabetic people in person till 28th of may ill be 37 weeks by then... so not really I dont feel supported as im not seeing anyone til. im full term!! I only have an email which I can contact with any issues but I just feel left to my own devices tbh
but thank you !

im hoping I can stay diet controlled but im sure everyone does, ive been testing a week but noticed today my number been higher with the usual things I eat and its caused me to be really upset seeing the high readings, theyre still in range but highest ive had. think its the double bread so im cutting down on that and trying oat cakes nairns ones,
hopefully it'll stay this way considering im past 34 weeks but I guess we have too see!

yeah im on that group they are helpful much more than nhs.. which is actually terrible!

see my measurements seem normal, like the abdominal etc god knows this has been stressful lol

my baby was only just on the 90th and they asked me for a test! if your really worried you can self test, buying your own kit but im not sure what numbers you'd be looking for if you are worried, join the gestational diabetes uk Facebook group ask how you can test at home as your midwife wont allow u to have a test, then go from there testing yourself! only other thing I can think is lying saying you have very dry mouth and urinating alot etc, and say you want a test!

I was asked if I had diabetes when DC2 was born because they were 9lb 11oz and extremely long. However, baby was 10 days late, I am tall, and DC1 was 9lb 2oz and also extremely long (I didn't have diabetes. I just produce whoppers).

Notallscumbags · 15/05/2024 19:50

I had GD with my second. Had a normal spontaneous labour. The FB group is great. I still make some of the recipes. I was diet controlled. Baby was fine. Waiting to see if it reappears with my third (I suspect so).

Abelle1 · 15/05/2024 19:51

Gestational diabetes checks are pretty standard around this time, so it might have just been a routine question. As for the weight, 4lb 11oz at 32 weeks sounds about average, but I'm not a doc, so if you're worried, it's always good to follow up with your healthcare provider.

What is horrific about the test? They must be done differently in different areas, all I had to do was have a blood test, drink a sugar drink and then have another test

nothing I just dont like blood tests especially when I cant eat before as I feel even more faint, a lot of people just say the drink is so bad but I actually liked It lol
it was fine but im sure people with HG and bad sickness would've struggled especially to down a 250ml drink. that fast

was made Clear to me that they only did It because of her weight/ being on the 90th percentile , I have a growth scan next week at 36 weeks 2 days so ill be seeing what her growth/ what she is now and then I guess well go from them what my options are bit nervous to be honest about that scan and what they'll say
and I did think 4lb 11 was pretty ok I seen people on social media say theyre babies weighed alot more at 32 weeks and it never got flagged I didnt mention any other symptoms of GD so so I guess its strange but good they did test me in the end because I did have it !
