I’ve popped a couple of hats in for mine along with a few pairs socks as not all my little bodysuits for her have feet. I’ve got a pair of scratch mitts as well. I’ve also got her little going home outfit which is just some dungarees with a long sleeve bodysuit under and then we’ll tuck a blanket around her in the car seat so she’s cosy.

Bring some things for yourself as well. At least a change of clothes and underwear. Also a towel - when I had my first I was in a room with an ensuite, but no towel was provided

MumChp · 07/04/2024 16:22

And a lip balm for yourself.
Charger for phone.
Snacks.
Nice clothes to wear.
Slippers.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 07/04/2024 16:25

Can you not just put the disposable teats on those bottles and save bringing/sterilising other bottles?
I wouldn't bother with scratch mitts tbh, much better for babies to be able to get their hands into their mouth.
Have you a way to sterilise the dummies?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 07/04/2024 16:29

plenty of knickers for yourself, and pads !
extra nightie or whatever for yourself
and a cardi or a dressing gown or a shawl or something to put round you whilst sitting up in bed if you are the gets cold type of person

book/s. magazines, crossword books - whatever you like to occupy yourself with for when you are not looking after baby and it's not visiting hours

squash ? if you don't want endless glasses of hospital water from a jug ?

I didn't have any teats with these bottles, also they are quite big bottles so just better to pour the milk into the bottles unless I can find small ones with the teats?

I will sterile the dummies right at the last minute and put them in a little dummy box so they don't get dirty!

Normally you would buy the newborn starter packs that are little bottles with teats already on them, they're one time use. This is because hospitals don't have facilities to wash and steralise proper bottles so if you used yours you'd not be able to reuse them while in hospital. Newborns feed little and often, and the formula is only good for two hours(?) once opened and not in the fridge so if you're in for 24 hours you've potentially not got enough if you do it your way.

Something like this (sorry if the link is messy, I dunno how to paste it in better):

I wouldn't use wipes on a newborns skin. I'd use cotton wool (pack this) and water.

Even if they are water wipes?

Okay I'll put some cotton pads in!

Definitely I'd pack some hats for baby and a cardigan too

For you - lots of maternity pads, breast pads and big pants. A cardigan, slippers, towel (with toiletries) and going home outfit. Long charger, diluting juice, cash (coins in case the vending machine doesn't take card)

Yes - i notice a difference

Snacks for your partner, baby grows nearly always have integral scratch mittens, travel changing mat, slippers for you and plenty of spare nighties/pjs as can get soiled quite easily after the birth.

Definitely cotton wool and water for nappy area.
Flannel (or more cotton wool) for washing the babies face/hands
something to change her on (a folded towel or changing mat)
Baby soap/shampoo/towel

Are you allowed to bath babies in hospital?

Babies don't need to be bathed in hospital. I believe you're told to wait 24 hours, although a sponge down rather than a bath is recommended until their cord falls off anyway.

TomeTome · 07/04/2024 17:29

All of mine were bathed before we came home. Some cultures don’t wash new borns but I think washing is more common here. You can choose, you’re the mum.

Biggest tip. If you have a partner with you collect up all the stuff you're taking and ask them to pack the bag. That way when you ask for something during labour they know where it is.

Oh that's a good point didn't think of that,
I've got bags with clothes and other stuff in and I've labelled it too x
