private ultrasound scan told me the wrong gender

I had a gender scan at an ultrasound direct clinic at 16 weeks and was told a boy, but at my 20 week nhs scan today they said it’s a girl???? Has this happened to anyone else??

I have no idea what to believe, I mean I’m sure the first scan was wrong (too early??) but I still don’t believe it! The private clinic have apologised and are doing a rescan for free on Sunday and will give us a refund for the original scan if they are wrong.

in such a state of shock lol I’m happy either way as I have a 15 month old boy and would be happy for him to have a brother or sister

I know a lady who just had her surprise boy a couple of weeks ago, she had been told at every scan she was having a girl!

soupfiend · 04/04/2024 21:00

Observing the sex of an unborn is not an exact science. Occasionally they're going to get it wrong!

no way! I’m glad I found out now I think I would have really bonded with the thought of having another boy, we already had a boy name as it is! I’m just happy for a healthy baby to be honest xx

No I know I just didn’t think it’s that common especially mistaking a girl for a boy!

Why did you pay for a private 16 week scan when a free one telling you the baby's sex would be done at 20 weeks anyway?

Not all NHS sonographers will disclose the sex, and even if they're willing the baby sometimes won't cooperate. My DD wouldn't get into a position to be able to confidently say either way, so we didn't find out until the birth.

justanotherlaura · 04/04/2024 21:29

@TwigletsAndRadishes in my city the sonographers won't tell you at the 20 week scan, they don't even scan over the genital area so you can't guess.

We didn't want to find out with our first pregnancy when we were in another city and we were told to close our eyes at one point in the scan, nothing like that happened this time, we wouldn't have had a clue if we didn't already know

norfolkbeaches · 04/04/2024 21:33

It happens, the foetus is tiny. I know someone who was told boy at 20 week scan and had her third girl.

Tellmemore16 · 04/04/2024 21:37

The exact same thing happened to my sister, it was the NHS scan that was wrong. They told my sister at the private clinic when she called to query that they would be very surprised that it would be them in the wrong but would absolutely refund if they were

Because it’s her choice…! Her body, her money, her baby. Doesn’t need a justification!
Some people want to find out early, or as explained, some areas don’t offer the info.

TheSnowyOwl · 04/04/2024 23:34

I know someone who was told a girl throughout. She had a boy.

Because I wanted to and we were excited to find out ???

Yes I had to ask for the gender, she didn’t just offer it willingly, but then she told me she could see it was a girl and scanned for 5 minutes showing me all different angles!

Oh really! They said they were likely to be the ones in the wrong - I have no idea what to believe at this point so hopefully will get clarification at the rescan on the weekend x

There have been quite a few articles written exposing these private ultrasound practices for what they are: charlatans.

Pretty much anyone can purchase an ultrasound machine and set up shop on the high street, charging for scans. In some cases it’s verging on barbaric. I’ve known women who have gone on to lose the baby being scanned by these places, giving misleading and misplaced hope when the NHS scan has revealed a foetus measuring small for its age and with a thready heartbeat that is unlikely to survive.

They are not qualified in many cases and not regulated so can tell you what they want with no recourse. Obviously there’s no real harm done in your case but there are known cases of women missing their NHS scans and relying on these high street scans to detect birth defects, which have then been missed and the pregnancy has progressed with an in unviable foetus, incompatible with life.

There is such poor awareness around this subject.

QueenBitch666 · 05/04/2024 02:18

It's sex not gender. Language matters

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/04/2024 02:23

NHS: probably a boy
Private scan: definitely a girl
Actual baby: a girl

Awful term - but did you see the 'burger' lines - 3 in a row and straight. It was obvious to me on the 20 week scan. I felt a bit sorry for her really, picturing all of her bits!

Son was born 15 years earlier - well 27 years ago and you could definitely tell he was a boy! Good grief, they'd both happily kill me reading that back!

This! Even your NHS scan isn't necessarily correct. It's the sex that you are being told. No scan can predict how your child will express their gender identity.

OldTinHat · 05/04/2024 10:24

Sex! Not gender.

TheIcecreamManCometh · 05/04/2024 10:30

Maybe now, because the word gender has been hijacked, but I've never heard the term Sex Reveal Party, have you?! Easter Wink

Maybe she really wanted the information? Maybe she wanted the reassurance that her baby was well at 16 weeks?

Maybe she doesn’t have the same financial restrictions as you?

Good luck with the next scan OP!

lol this - this thread has invited lots of pedants to comment when it’s clear what I meant. They are called gender scans everywhere you go, not sex scans, and you have gender reveals etc. I meant no harm in what I said, it’s just the term that everyone uses!

Thank you! 😊

Exactly as you said, I lost my first baby at 18 weeks and 5 days in a missed miscarriage. It was horrific. My only scan I had had at 13 weeks showed everything was fine.

So for this pregnancy and my last I paid for extra scans for peace of mind! I can afford it and it makes me feel better seeing the heartbeat until I get to the 20 week scan

I have never heard of that term haha I’ve just googled it. But when she was scanning from what I can remember it did look like that!
