Just in the last week, my bump has gone enormous and it's so itchy - had this with ds in the last weeks, but not with dd. DC3 is proving to be a textbook preg of every niggle under the sun!

What can I smear myself with?????

I tried all sorts from moisturiser to baby oil, to olive oil, and in the end I just scratched, the drawing of blood was nothing compared to the scratching!

Not much help am I?!

bobsmum · 28/03/2008 12:26

Will bite nails down to the stump then

Pah!

if it's that bad, i would ring MW, you could have something wrong, it causes itching. Forgotten its name

bobsmum · 28/03/2008 12:29

Yeah - there's obstetric cholly-whatsit - but I think that's itchy hands? If its carries on I will though - dont' loook very ladylike atm!

I can't remember the name of it either, but it is something to do with the liver isn't it? Though I was always led to believe it was itching all over the body that was cause for concern?

My itchyness was caused by the dreaded stretch marks appearing.

littlelamb · 28/03/2008 12:33

I had this with dd and my doctor gave me steroid cream to put on my bump. In hindsight, I really regret putting it on and not trying something else, as I think it probably contributed to the dreadful stretchmarks I got, as it thins your skin One of the things I have found has hlped with itchyness this time is a Mange Too massage bar from Lush- dd has been rubbing it on my tummy every night and it smells yummy and really helps with the itching.

scorpio1 · 28/03/2008 12:34

is just itching i think; but better safe than sorry? Sounds really uncomfy btw.

bobsmum · 28/03/2008 12:35

Mmmm - Lush products - this could be a good excuse for some pampering.....

Oooo definately pop into Lush. I have a friend who works there and so always piles my bag with freebies , and she recommended this to me and I have been so pleased with it

WanderingTrolley · 28/03/2008 12:39

Obstetric cholestasis

C&Ped from link:

symptoms of obstetric cholestasis include:

Itching that generally begins - or is most intense - on the arms, legs, palms of the hands and soles of the feet
Itching that's usually worse at night
Problems sleeping
Tiredness
Poor appetite
Nausea
Jaundice - yellowing of whites of eyes and skin (uncommon)

bobsmum · 28/03/2008 12:41

Thanks WT - definitely not that then!

Just damned itching on my bump!!!!

Is Lush online? Feel a spend coming on....

here oooer it seems its a bit more of a racy product than i realised

bobsmum · 28/03/2008 12:45

One of my friends swears by aquaeous cream with menthol - you can get a pharmacist to make it up for you, and the added bonus is that it's cheap as chips for a massive tub.

Really takes the heat and itchiness away (and great if you overdo the sun too, not that there's much of that going on right now).

whinegums · 28/03/2008 13:43

Of course you will smell of polo mints rather than sexy Lush products!!!!

pmac · 28/03/2008 14:57

hello. i really recommend Mama Bee Belly Butter from Burts Bees - it's an organic shea butter cream which is really rich & soothing. it's a bit on the expensive side at £14 a pot, but lasts a long time and well worth it

hannahjb · 28/03/2008 16:16

what about camomile lotion, my midwife says that that was OK to put on itchy bump but might be worth asking yours first? Your midwife that is, not your bump!!!!

PrePG · 28/03/2008 16:29

It doesn't seem to be diagnosed much here, but might it be PUPPPs? www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A2829297

Although it would be accompanied by a rash.

Deux · 28/03/2008 18:12

I use Aveeno which has been great. Used it for DS's eczema. You could also try the oats in a sock in the bath thing too.

sweet almond oil did the trick for me

mummyofsofs · 28/03/2008 22:43

I had the same problem, it stopped my from sleeping at night. Tried all the creams and oils nothing worked.

Then my doctor perscribed periton (for allergys) and after a few days it stopped the itching.

I had to continue taking it untill the end of my pregnancy as when i stoppped the itching returned. But the doctor resurred me it would notharm the baby. She is very healthy.

Go to seee the doctor asap, good luck! x

Found my cocoa butter and layered that on - seems to have helped a little. I think the main culprit was my over the bump big pants - which seemed to offer so much comfort and yet soooooo much scratching. I'm under the bump today and the itchiness is still there, but much improved. grrr - I hate under bump stuff - just don't feel very "held in place" IYSWIM?

OP posts:
littlelamb · 29/03/2008 18:51

Glad you feel a bit better. I find over bump stuff a bit harsh on the skin too, but hate letting it all hang out . Have you tried a bump band? I have two that were a fiver each from Topshop and don't irritate my skin, help hold up under the bump trousers and save the world from the sight of my stretch mark riddled belly
