Just in the last week, my bump has gone enormous and it's so itchy - had this with ds in the last weeks, but not with dd. DC3 is proving to be a textbook preg of every niggle under the sun!

What can I smear myself with?????

I had OC in my previous pregnancy and it seems to be back again this time. Last time I only ever noticed severe itching over my bump (not hands and feet which are the classic symptoms), so I would definitely push for a blood test to check liver function and bile acids. It can be a serious condition so better to get it checked out and you can have it even if you don't have all the symptoms. This time around I've got more generalised itching on my bump and also hands and feet. I got some aqueous cream with calamine from the chemist which helps a bit.

I found that I got some relief by holding something cold against the spot.
FWIW my bump has been itchy but difficult to scratch properly - I think its the beginning of stretch marks irritating the skin. If this is the case with you it makes sense that a good moisturiser helps.

You can get Piriton cream? I get hives, and because there's a risk of that getting bad enough to cause anaphylactic shock I had it okayed, tablets and creams, but for your bump creams would be best - it just kills the itch. It's a safe antihistamine in pregnancy - some of the rest are a lot newer, so they've less evidence on safety (obviously they can't test them!)

I find after sun lotion helps, it's got an ingredient in it that cools the skin

bobsmum I had unbearable ithcing from about 34wks, midwife said to grin and bear it when i can and at the worse points (for me eveninG) have some liquid piriton, and put Anthisan cream on, found the two helped give me relief, dont overuse of course, just save them for when it gets unbearable. hth

Great ideas about the after sun and the piriton - will try them. It does get worse in the evening. sPoiled my whole kirsty and phil viewing last night

I have definitely found that 'over the bump' trousers exacerbate the problem - especially in the evenings after a whole day of wear. But my friend bought me a large tub of Neal's Yard Mother's Balm (v. thick vaseline-y type stuff, which melts when rubbed in hands - a bit like Eve Lom cleanser if you know that) which has been fab! I would hightly recommend it to anyone with 'itchy bump' syndrome...! x

I had OC just recently. It was very severe itching on my hands and feet, enough to keep me awake. By chance, I had a MW appt the following day, so although she thought it was nothing she took bloods anyway. It turned out my LFT's were way out and I was scheduled to be induced at 38 weeks. As it happened my waters broke the following day and I was induced 48hrs later. DS was born safe and well at just over 37 weeks.

It is a serious condition if ignored, so if in any doubt get checked out.

Harra · 03/04/2008 19:15

Baby oil in the bath water was the only thing I found to give some relief. My Dr took it seriously and I was tested for OC but clear.

Had much relief last night!

Dh suggested I use his aftershave balm for sensitive skin! Nivea for men with aloe in white packaging - absolutely fabulous and really cooling.

I am using nappy rash cream, assuming you have no other symptoms then it is common..
