What did waters going slowly feel like for you

I just felt a small gush of fluid come out of my vagina, so I spoke to my local DAU about it but they didn’t seem concerned at all. They said, it sounds like you’re panicking a bit too much so just relax and take it easy. I’m only 33+5 so maybe that’s why I sounded panicky! They did say if it continues to come out then call them again so I will be keeping an eye on it. I did feel another small trickle afterwards, I soaked through my underwear and leggings so I’ve changed them and put a panty liner on too.

Can anyone else share their experience of slow leaking waters please what did it feel like for you? Is there anything else I need to look out for? I’m hoping it’s not my waters and it’s just very watery discharge…

I didnt, they broke my waters in hospital but I would say to call and ask if they can test it as you've felt a few trickles. They have a swab test to tell you if it's amniotic fluid or not. Better to look silly and check than not and something happen

naggy095 · 22/03/2024 16:10

I accidentally omitted the fact that I spoke to them in person when this happened! I was at the hospital for a scan anyway and then it happened, so I went to them and asked and they didn’t want to do anything

I'd definitely go and get it checked - that's what my slow leaking waters felt like and my baby arrived the next day...

MrsPeannut · 22/03/2024 16:16

My waters broke slowly. I never felt it. I woke up to a puddle in bed and all day I was just soaking through pads and my underwear. But I physically never felt anything happen.

Ponche · 22/03/2024 16:23

Mine broke at 35+1. I was lying on the sofa and felt the urge to pee, when I got up I saw a small wet patch on the sofa and when I went to the toilet and wiped, the toilet paper was light pink. I thought I was bleeding so called the maternity unit and they weren’t concerned, they thought it may be due to a stomach bug as I was vomiting the night before.

I put a pad in and went in to get checked out and on the way there I kept feeling a constant trickle and thought it must be my waters. The fluid was light pink in colour and they did a test and it was confirmed it was my waters. Kept me in for 24 hours then went home and I was back a couple of days later as early labour had started and DD was born the next day at 35+5.

Cantgetausername87 · 22/03/2024 16:25

Mine broke at 40 on the dot. I would go and get checked out because honestly I didn't "feel" like anything. At times I thought I was imagining it! Good luck x

Ponche · 22/03/2024 16:26

Forgot to say, they gave me two steroid injections 24 hours apart to strengthen baby’s lungs in case labour started.

StrawberrieSheree · 22/03/2024 16:33

1st time was like a slow trickle but enough that I knew what was happening, then loads of water kept coming out over the next 2/3 hours.

2nd time, they broke spectacularly, like you see in the films. I felt a ‘pop’, I stood up quickly, then water just poured out and didn’t stop, it flooded all over the floor! Luckily I was in hospital, it took 2 midwives to contain it 🤣

naggy095 · 22/03/2024 16:39

Thanks for sharing everyone. Those that felt small trickles, was it a constant trickle? Because I haven’t felt anything for a while now, and my change of underwear and panty liner are dry

It varied between a constant trickle and then on and off. I think my waters stopped leaking within 24 hours of breaking and my bump looked slightly smaller.

Maybe get checked out for peace of
mind as you don’t want to risk infection.

It only went on for about 12 hours for me, as I had a c section after my waters broke, but it was all day.

But it is possible for it to stop and start and leak very slowly. Keep an eye on it and if it carries on, definitely go in. But if you do think it’s your waters, then go in now. You’re only 33 weeks.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 22/03/2024 16:55

Mine started at 34.5. I felt like I was peeing myself so was embarrassed until I realised. Got checked but all was ok, DH is a Dr and we lived close so they decided to leave me and just come in for daily monitoring, which we did. Every time I moved I felt more trickle out. DD eventually got into a bit of a pickle and I ended up with a crash section at 35.3. In hindsight I shouldn’t have been left so long as I had no waters left by that time. So be very careful and monitor movement.

Row23 · 22/03/2024 16:56

I’d definitely push to be seen. My waters broke slowly throughout the day and I kind of didn’t realise. I thought I was jus t having accidents 🤦🏻‍♀️ it was a small slow trickle at times, then nothing for a while and then started again until eventually in the evening they fully went. By the time I got to hospital baby was in distress and I think if I’d been seen earlier then we possibly could have avoided that.

SweetThames · 22/03/2024 17:28

Definitely wasn't a constant trickle with me - small occasional gushes particularly when the baby moved.

Sammie1990 · 22/03/2024 21:05

Hi
PLEASE go and get seen. Like you I had a small trickle of water and was told to put a pad on and monitor. Nothing else happened. I was due to go in 2 days later for a sweep (I was 40 weeks). At the sweep I told the midwife about the trickle, she tested me and my hind waters had broken. This was really dangerous as it was not over 24 hours and could have got an infection. I wasn’t allowed to leave the hospital, they broke my waters and I had an awful labour. I am not trying to scare you but I wish I had pushed harder for them to swab me when the trickle happened x

Maraudingmarauders · 22/03/2024 21:12

I'd definitely ask to get tested. I was in hospital waiting for induction, thought I felt a little liquid but tbh I'd been leaking urine on and off for a while so didn't think much of it. Midwife said to keep an eye on it. Didn't notice anything else. I had a cat 1 EMCS two days later before I could be induced as baby was in distress on monitoring. When they cut me open I had no amniotic fluid at all, so I'd obviously been slow leaking when I urinated etc.

Mistralli · 22/03/2024 21:19

At 36 weeks I woke up having little contraction pains in the morning - I though it was just B-H constractions as I'd been having them for weeks. But then I felt a bit of a watery trickle and like you had pinkish fluid when I wiped. Called the MAU and they had me in. Monitored and then tried to tell me I'd probably just wee-ed. Except, they did think they should do the test for amniotic fluid, and low and behold I was dilated and it was a leak of my waters. They admitted me for induction and started me on antibiotics.

I felt nothing all day!

That night I went into labour. After some contractions that still weren't enough to get me calling for help, my remaining waters did the spectacular TV style pop (it felt like a balloon going) and soaked everything. My baby arrived an hour later.

So erm, maybe you're in labour now! Best of luck for your arrival.

Molliebobs22 · 22/03/2024 23:14

I was 41 weeks, couldn’t sleep so got up to go to the toilet and as I sat up I thought I’d wee’d myself. I had a change of underwear and got back into bed, still couldn’t sleep and got up for the toilet about an hour later and the same happened. I went downstairs on the sofa for a little while and every time I went from laying to sitting I would feel a trickle. I phoned the hospital and they said to monitor for an hour with a pad. The same kept happening so rang them back and they said to come in. They tested and confirmed it was my waters. I went home and felt the same all day and went back to hospital in the evening to be induced. The trickling did stop in the end and they confirmed it was my back waters and decided to break the front ones while giving me a sweep. I ended up having an emcs and baby was born 44 hours after the first trickle. We had to stay in for monitoring for 3 days because of the length of time. Luckily me and baby were both ok but could have been a different story if I did just think I had wet myself. I’d demand a test and go from there. Wishing you all the best x

GardeningIsNotMe · 22/03/2024 23:18

It felt like I was peeing myself and couldn’t stop. It smelled like almonds

Monkeytownten · 23/03/2024 00:30

Do do do go and get checked. I think my experience is rare, but it happened:

in my first pregnancy, I felt a very tiny leak, and thought maybe I’d peed a little bit (late pregnancy, you know). I called my midwife and she told me not to worry as if my waters had broken I would know.

Over a week later I went in for my induction at 41 weeks due to low fluid levels on scan. Everything went fine until it came time to break my bag of waters. The midwife seemed to be having a hard time so called in the obstetrician for support. He confirmed there were no waters to break. I went on to have a C-Setion because of fetal distress after over 35 hrs of labour—likely wouldn’t have happened had there been amniotic fluid. I must have gone well over a week with no fluid, and while I had some false starts proper labour never commenced. I was so lucky that I didn’t get infections.

The team consulted over my case and concluded that because baby was so descended, her head was plugging the cervix and so my waters leaked so slowly it was barely noticeable (plus, fluid tends to decrease in late/post-date pregnancy).

I had bad ptsd after my delivery and still feel so angry that I didn’t push more for a test/didn’t have a more diligent midwife. Moral of the story: the idea that “you will know” is just not true. Advocate for yourself and get them to test for fluid leak. It can make a big difference to your outcome.

Maraudingmarauders · 23/03/2024 08:14

@Monkeytownten did you request info after your birth or did they consult and tell you? I was told in the operating theatre about no amniotic fluid but heard absolutely nothing more about it.

naggy095 · 23/03/2024 08:34

I really appreciate each and every comment. I decided to not go in as my pad remained completely dry and I haven’t had any more episodes of fluid leaking. So if I were to go in and they tested for amniotic fluid they wouldn’t be able to confirm it and would just send me home. I will obviously be vigilant today for any sensations of leakage and if I do have any more I will contact my DAU right away. Thank you everyone for your advice.

MrsPeannut · 23/03/2024 09:20

They test by doing an internal swab for any traces of it. Doesn’t matter that your pad is now dry.

I didn’t officially request it, but I was upset, shaken, and asking “why” a lot. I think because they came close to loosing baby (it was scary) there was discussion about what went wrong? I saw a different midwife for pp care, so I wonder if she was reprimanded.

blubberfuzz · 23/03/2024 10:31

My water started leaking at 36 weeks. I noticed it getting out of the bath and thought at first that water had gone inside me and was coming out. Afterwards it felt like the sensation of when you are on your period and feel a heavier moment trickling out. It wasn't constant at all. I went to get checked and my waters were leaking (very different to waters breaking). I was put straight on to antibiotics and checked daily for a week until I was induced at 37 weeks. They left it a week to get me to term. If your waters are leaking there is a risk of infection to the baby so I really would consider going back in.
