Anyone with/who had HG struggled with drinking fluids?

The struggle is real for fluids - everything I think of makes my stomach turn which makes it impossible to try and drink as my mind is like nooo don't drink that I don't want that.

I'm 13+5 and feel like I've been pregnant 10 years and tried every fluid - i've had a few successes but they've only lasted 3-4 days. I could drink orange juice which lasted 4 days, then I went off it from vomiting it up so much. I've tried orange squash which was the same. Tried other squash flavours and can't stomach.

Plain water really struggling with - I can tolerate smart water if I hold my nose and try not move afterwards so it doesn't come straight back up

Lucozade sport is a no no now and i've tried full fat coke - fizzy and flat and both made me vom instantly

I was back in hospital yet again yesterday getting iv fluids for the 5th time and I'm just so fed up today.

Any advice from fellow/current sufferers?! I am so thirsty!!!

Oh and all ice lollies are pretty much a no no now as well as I've tried them and been put off them from vomiting them up so much too

Ice cubes the same!

I don’t have a single bit of advice for you but wanted to offer solidarity because I was the exact same. I just kept forcing myself to drink water but it was pretty bloody awful.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 21/03/2024 12:52

I found sparkling water ok because there isn’t a taste to it when it comes back up. To be honest it was just a case of rotating through any food or drink because once you’ve thrown anything up a number of times it becomes unpalatable (major understatement)

polkadotpixie · 21/03/2024 12:59

Apple juice has been the best for me

twolittleDC · 21/03/2024 13:02

Sorry to hear you're going through this, it really is awful. I'm pregnant now and am only just coming off my meds at 27 weeks and had to go to hospital twice for fluids.

I could only tolerate anything from about 2pm onwards but I froze lucozade sport into ice cubes and then crushed them to suck / crunch on. You could try this with plain water too. Having that seemed to be more tolerable than sipping water which would come straight back up.

What meds have you tried? I tried cyclizine, prochlorperazine and metaclopromide all individually, via tablet, injection and IV and it was only when I took prochlorperazine and promethazine together that I had any relief. If you haven't already I would really recommend trying lots of different medications.

SeaToSki · 21/03/2024 13:02

Try to think in categories rather than actual drinks..so hot/cold. Fizzy/still. Sweet/plain. And then grab something and sip before actually thinking about it

have you tried hot stuff…miso, broth, various herbal teas
have you tried chilled tea
how about fruit nectars mixed with water or fizzy water or warmed up
how about dioralyte gatorade or lucozade/lucozade sport
strangely how about milk diluted or almond milk diluted and warmed

have you been given a scopolamine patch to try yet or onandestrom (sp?). They really worked for me

MizzMarple · 21/03/2024 13:09

Have you tried other mineral waters? In my first pregnancy I could drink Evian but nothing else for weeks. Also it’s easier drinking it through a straw. Try different medications too - ondanestron has been a game changer for me this pregnancy.

@Weallnamechangesometimes That's one thing I haven't tried - sparkling water! Thankyou it will be going on the shopping list for hubs to pick up lol

@twolittleDC thats a good idea freezing lucozade sport I will try that. I think I will try freezing orange juice too. Meds wise I've been through them all, currently on ondansetron and omeprazole they're the only combination that's helped reduced the sickness a little, all the others did nothing for the sickness and made me woozy and drowsy which I hated!

Have you tried milk? What about wet foods like watermelon/grapes/soup? Loads of sympathy, I don't have HG just regular morning sickness and I'm still really struggling with fluids.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 21/03/2024 13:47

@SeaToSki Thankyou those are really useful recommendations id not thought of. I think its a case of me just trying 1 thing at a time and hoping for the best! Meds wise yes I'm on ondansetron, it's reduced the sickness by some but its still a struggle!

Coke from McDonald's I found I could just about manage the second time.

The first time I just sipped the smallest amounts of flavoured water and ended up in hospital.

Sorry op. It's so fucking shit.

tweetypi · 21/03/2024 13:48

I ended up finding that lukewarm green tea was the only thing I could stomach. The dehydration made me feel terrible. Good luck keeping some fluids down x

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 21/03/2024 13:48

@MizzMarple No I haven't that's a good shout thankyou! As I started the 1st trimester drinking the bottled water from aldi and now I can't even look at the bottle which made me switch to smart water so might try some other brands too. On the ondansetron it's been the best one for me too, still throwing up a fair bit but has reduced it compared to what it was.

I was going to say to push for Ondansetron but you're already on it.

Be mindful of constipation on it. I was in so much pain (though that was preferable to the awful sickness!).

Nameynameychanger · 21/03/2024 13:58

You have all my sympathy - my youngest is now 14 but I can remember like it was yesterday. Awful.

The only liquid I could touch was soda / sparkling water with lime cordial..... Small sips. Can't bear the stuff now!

lunar1 · 21/03/2024 14:00

You have all my sympathy, nothing worked for me, I had to have iv fluids twice a week till I delivered. I was even sick in labour.

Alloveragain3 · 21/03/2024 14:08

Seconding the sparkling water suggestion

I hate it normally but it's the one thing I could drink when I had morning sickness

IAmPrincessKate · 21/03/2024 14:12

I could bear small sips of ice cold water (really, really COLD) or ice cold, full fat Coke. Nothing else.

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 21/03/2024 14:13

Water melon. I still long for water melon now. It was the only thing that gave me pleasure! And also, finding a window in the day when I could stomach fluids and using that. Then the anti sickness drugs.

Dragonboobs · 21/03/2024 14:19

I think at one point melon kept me alive with DS. With DD Diet Coke I could stomach and it helped because it made me burp and that stopped me feeling quite so sick 🤷🏻‍♀️

inquisitiveinga · 21/03/2024 21:34

You're doing so, SO well 💓 wanted to hop on to offer more solidarity and support.

I'm 35 weeks now and over the worst of the HG (hopefully), but lemon ice water through a strawed bottle helped ever so slightly.

Lillers · 21/03/2024 21:48

I’m so with you on drinks having to be extra cold - our wine fridge has been repurposed as my soft drinks fridge for the duration of this pregnancy 😂

bluebells89 · 21/03/2024 21:56

Soda water is my absolute saviour right now. Makes me burp loads and really relieves the nausea so the reason I’m not sick as many times a day now.

Itsallthelittlethings · 21/03/2024 21:57

Crushed ice when I couldnt manage anything. Try to swallow it down before your mouth realises what you've done. And then hot tea. Not decaff it had to be real tea with milk. I'm so sorry hope you get some relief soon. Have you been given any meds? You need them, they are safe but unfortunately you may have to push for them.

SnowSnow · 21/03/2024 22:02

2 small sips at a time of appletiser was tolerable for me and meant I got a tiny bit of sugar on board at the same time
