Anyone with/who had HG struggled with drinking fluids?

The struggle is real for fluids - everything I think of makes my stomach turn which makes it impossible to try and drink as my mind is like nooo don't drink that I don't want that.

I'm 13+5 and feel like I've been pregnant 10 years and tried every fluid - i've had a few successes but they've only lasted 3-4 days. I could drink orange juice which lasted 4 days, then I went off it from vomiting it up so much. I've tried orange squash which was the same. Tried other squash flavours and can't stomach.

Plain water really struggling with - I can tolerate smart water if I hold my nose and try not move afterwards so it doesn't come straight back up

Lucozade sport is a no no now and i've tried full fat coke - fizzy and flat and both made me vom instantly

I was back in hospital yet again yesterday getting iv fluids for the 5th time and I'm just so fed up today.

Any advice from fellow/current sufferers?! I am so thirsty!!!

Getting drinks as cold as possible was key for me with my HG at its worst. It didn’t matter so much what the drink was, I just had to have ice in everything and sip it. I’m still putting ice in all my drinks now because it’s the only way I can manage them.

With your meds it’s worth asking to add something else in. Ondansetron reduced my sickness from 30+ times a day to about 5-10 times a day but didn’t stop it, so my GP added in promethazine at night and an omeprazole in the morning and that’s worked. I’m still sick occasionally but it’s once or twice a week now at most rather than daily. I also found at my worst taking 4mg of ondansetron 6 times daily rather than 8mg 3 times daily helped keep on top of it. I’ve managed to get that down to 4mg twice daily and still take promethazine at night and omeprazole in the morning now I’m near the end but if I go below that the sickness creeps in again. But speak to your GP or the hospital about adding something else with ondansetron and omeprazole to help you get better control.

@PurplePastaBake Thankyou for that, I will enquire about further meds as my sickness is pretty much the same as what yours was, I've gone from 20-30 times to around 5-10 times a day now. I find that I always have to ask my GP, they never offer it or give me a med review etc. It was me who asked for ondansetron, me who asked for omeprazole etc and I had to keep going back when the earlier line meds weren't working to request a new one. I went through them all before I finally caved and asked for ondansetron at 10 weeks, so guess I have to take things into my own hands!

I had to do the same. I kept requesting meds via the online system to try out different combinations and going back for appointments or being admitted to hospital to get different things until we got there. It was actually the GP that suggested the promethazine as an addition though. It really seemed to be the missing piece of the puzzle for me and from about 2 days after I started it there was a massive improvement. It really helps me sleep too because it’s taken at night so I don’t wake up already feeling nauseous and ready to throw up. For me it helped get rid of the nausea too not just the sickness. Good luck 🤞🏼 it’s absolutely miserable when you can’t get control over it.
If you’re on Facebook there’s a hyperemesis and pregnancy sickness support group and they’re incredibly helpful with med suggestions and tips for dealing with all the different aspects of HG.
